Mission Statement

The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph is committed to combatting sexual abuse in the Church. If you are a victim of sexual abuse, or if you observe or suspect sexual abuse:

1. Call the Missouri Child Abuse Hotline at 1.800.392.3738 (if the victim is currently under the age of 18), and 2. Contact your local law enforcement agency or call 911, and 3. After reporting to these civil and law enforcement authorities, report suspected sexual abuse of a minor or vulnerable adult to the Diocesan Ombudsman, Joe Crayon, at 816.812.2500 or [email protected], if the abuse involves a priest, deacon, employee or volunteer of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph. The Diocese has a sincere commitment to providing care and healing resources to victims of sexual abuse and their families. Where Are The AEDs? An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is used to help those experiencing sudden car-diac arrest. They are important because they strengthen the Chain of Survival and restore a normal heart rhythm in victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

Here at St. James, there are four AED units available throughout the buildings.

• In the Gathering Space of our new church outside the Ushers room

• On the wall in the new Parish Hall

• On the wall in the Narthex of the old church - this unit serves primarily the School and the Resource Center

• In the Gym Atrium

It is not enough to just have the units available. They must be fully operational with up to date pads. Those who may have to use them must know where they are located. The four units described above have been in-spected by Jim Waterman and are fully operational and pads are current.

What Should I Do If I See Someone Experiencing A Cardiac Arrest?

If someone in the location you are in appears to be ex-periencing cardiac arrest, you should quickly call out loudly to others in or near your location that a trained AED operator is needed immediately (Yes, do this even if you are attending Mass in the church).

AEDs preferably should be used by individuals who have been trained in how to use them. However, in du-ress even untrained individuals should turn the unit on and listen to the directions and follow them.

We are grateful to the families who financially made this happen and we greatly appreciate Jim Waterman’s commitment to keep us up to date on this technology.

From the Pastor’s Pen This weekend we are honoring Jim Newell, who is leaving the staff here at St. James. He has served as Operations Manager for the past eleven years! We are grateful to Jim and his leader-ship of our campaigns over the years, and of course, overseeing the building of our beautiful church!

Jim will certainly be around here at St. James, but we wish him the best (and maybe some relaxation and travel). God’s Bless-ings Jim, and thanks for being such a good and faithful steward and servant here at St. James.

We lift up our nation and all our communities in this transition of leadership in our country. We pray for President-Elect Biden and Vice-President Elect Harris, that they will certainly be open to God's guidance in their leadership.

Next weekend, we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, the Last Sunday of the Church Liturgical Year. To help us prepare for the Advent Season that begins on Thanksgiving weekend, we will be distributing an Advent Bag – a gift for all of our families.

You may pick up the Advent Bag for your family after all of the Masses next weekend. They will be on tables in the Gathering Space.

For those unable to attend Mass next weekend, you may pick up your bag at our ‘drive through’ pickup between 1:30pm and 2:30pm in front of the church where Fr. Michael and I will be distributing the Advent Bags. See page 4 for more details.

From now through Thanksgiving weekend, we are collecting donations for our Advent Giving Tree. Because we are unable to have our “traditional Giving Tree” this year, your donations will fund the purchase of items requested by the agencies we sup-port. See page 6 to learn how you can help so that the individu-als these agencies support are remembered this Christmas season.

As we approach Thanksgiving we are so grateful in so many ways for all God's gifts and pray that gratitude might lead us and guide us.

Someone is Watching and Wondering I am sure today’s reading from Proverbs is familiar to many of us. There is one verse, however, that par-ticularly touched me as I look back on the year 2020 and forward to Advent:

“She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy, (v. 20). I can only guess how each of you are feeling at this particular moment, but I feel needy. I feel the need to reach out and hug so many people who have been isolated for months, quarantined in their homes. I need to share a meal with family and friends. I need to receive both the body and blood of Christ. I need to heal mentally and emotionally, to embrace the suffer-ing of others, and to share the peace and love of Christ whenever and wherever I encounter brokenness.

These past months, our Nation has been divided over race relations, religious beliefs, immigration, who’s in or out, who’s right or wrong, winning and losing, rich and poor, and how to exist in an environment riddled with disease and natural disasters. Enough is enough; it is time to accept our differences, communicate through civilized discussion, and as Catholic Christians embrace the gospel message to love and humbly serve one an-other. It is time to reconnect, let go, and trust that God will give us the strength and the courage to hope and believe in the goodness of creation and all humankind.

I recently read one of the daily messages from Pope Francis where he stated the simple truth that we are one world and one people created and gathered in love. We are global people, inter-related through common needs and goals. When we work together, instead of amplifying differences, humanity can accomplish great things. We possess the tools to fight disease, to heal the planet, to ensure that all our brothers and sisters have food to eat, shelter, access to quality education and healthcare, and safety for our children. We must develop the capacity to hear and truly listen to every voice calling out for help, justice, compassion, empathy, and peace.

Advent begins in just two weeks. As we prepare for a reawakening to the presence of Christ in our lives, may we pray: “Lord, show me the way, help me understand what you are calling me to do; strengthen me and lead me where I am afraid to go. Lord grant me wisdom and courage to live in this world, not escape from it. Help me bring your hope, peace, joy and love to those who are suffering and continue to struggle through these difficult times. Make my voice be one of unity, not division, of gratitude not despair, of hope not hopelessness. Lord help me surrender my life to your loving care, and trust in your forgiveness and healing.” Blessings and hope to each of you. May you feel the peace of Christ.

Preparing For Advent An Advent Gift For You

As the colors of the sea-sons around us change, so do the colors of the seasons of the church’s liturgical year change as well.

Next Sunday is the last Sunday of ’Ordinary

Time’ , symbolized by the color green. The following Sunday, November 29, begins a new liturgical year and a new season, the season of Advent, symbol-ized by the color violet.

Advent is a time when we can step back from the hectic routine, slow down and contemplate the Mys-tery of the Incarnation. As with all new beginnings, this season is intended to renew our joy, hope, faith and love.

We have prepared an gift for you to help guide you through the Advent season.

Pick Up Your Advent Gift Bag next weekend

Advent Gift Bags will be available on tables in the Gathering Space next weekend. Please pick up one for your family after Mass.

For those who are not able to attend Mass next weekend, come to our ‘drive through’ pick-up event on Sunday, November 22 from 1:30pm until 2:30pm where Fr. Mike and Fr. Michael will be distributing the bags.


St. James Advent Giving Tree Collecting Donations Now

The Advent Giving Tree (AGT) is a well-loved min-istry at St. James, and we are thankful to be able to continue with it this year. Given COVID-19 restric-tions, we have made big changes to reduce the need for volunteers and hands-on processes.

Instead of gift tags on trees, individual shopping ef-forts, wrapping, and gift sorting, we will heavily rely on our Hope gift card program for our giving efforts.

What does that mean? Well, we just made your Ad-vent Giving Tree gifting easier. No need to debate what tags to take from the tree, and no need to shop or wrap gifts!

Simply make a donation – payable to St. James Church (with “AGT” on the notation line) and you’re done! The Advent Giving Tree Committee will do the rest – using your donations to purchase Hope gift cards, which will then be donated to the various chari-table agencies in need of our help.

Each week we will be sharing more about the ser-vices three of the nine agencies we are supporting. This week we are highlighting Cedars of Liberty, Jour-ney to New Life (JNL), and Kansas City Indian Center (KCIC). The other agencies are: the Bishop Sullivan Center, our own St. James Liberty, Hillcrest Hope, Liberty Women's Clinic (LWC), Love INC, and Ashton Court. .

* Cedars of Liberty is a retirement and assisted living facility in Liberty. Last year, through Advent Giving Tree, parishioners provided 139 residents with Christ-mas gifts of requested items. This year we will take a different approach – purchasing quantities of “most requested” items (e.g. lap blankets, bath supplies, puzzle books, coloring books) for residents to choose from as their Christmas gift from St. James.

* Journey to New Life (JNL) serves 2,000 men and women a year who are returning to the community from prison. JNL helps these individuals reintegrate into the community by providing a welcoming center that offers respect while assisting with basic necessi-ties and case management that includes housing. In the past, St. James’ Advent Giving Tree has sup-ported JNL by providing household items (sheets, blankets, towels, small appliances, etc.) to help these individuals get back on their feet. This year we will donate funds to help JNL purchase similar items for the individuals it serves.

* Kansas City Indian Center (KCIC) operates as the KC area’s only social service agency for American Indians. Its mission is to encourage social, educa-tional, and economic advancement of the American Indian community. Through the Advent Giving Tree, we will continue to assist this cause by donating funds for KCIC’s food pantry.

The Pastoral Council is sponsoring a Winter Coat Drive again this year. With sub-zero tem-peratures forecast for this winter, many coats are needed. In addition to coats, also needed are socks, gloves, scarves and other warm clothing.

Donations are being accepted now through Christmas. Please bring your donations to the Narthex (old church). There will be two piles - one for adults and one for children. Drop them off by the applicable sign.

Donations will be distributed to St. James Mid-town and homeless veterans in December.

If you are unable to bring your donations to St. James, contact one of our Pastoral Council members to arrange for a pick up. Pastoral Council members and their contact information are listed on page 2 of this bulletin.

CHIEF'S BLOOD DRIVE At St. James November 24

The Community Blood Center needs our help. Mo-bile blood drives, such as ours, account for 70% of the region’s blood supply. During these challenging times, many mobile drives have been cancelled, leaving the CBC struggling to keep up with patient needs in our area.

If you are healthy, at least 17 years of age (16 with parent’s signed consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, and have 30-60 minutes to spare to help someone in need, we would love to see you on Tuesday, Novem-ber 24. The last blood drive of 2020 will be held in the social hall from 12:30 - 6:30PM. All presenting do-nors will receive a free limited edition Chiefs t-shirt.

Appointments are preferred and highly encouraged. Schedule a convenient time to donate by calling

In past years during November (the month of All Souls, we have displayed our Book of the Dead - the names of parishioners and/or their family members who died during the prior year.

Due to the pandemic, this year our Book of the Dead is virtual on our website. Listed there are parishioners and/or their family members who have died since last October.

If you have someone who has gone before us and would like that person remembered in Masses this month, you are welcome throughout this month to add their names to our Book of the Dead.

Memorial of The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

November 21 The feast of the presentation of Mary dates back to the 6th century in the East and the 15th century in the West.

It is based on an ancient tra-dition that says Mary was taken to the temple in Jerusa-lem when she was 3-years-old and dedicated to God.

On this day we celebrate that God chose to dwell in Mary in a very special way. In re-sponse, she placed her whole self at the service of God.

Parish Religious Education Religious Education’s next gathering is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18 and Sunday, November 22. We will be gathering to share ideas on preparing during Advent using the 12 days of Christmas.

If you have not picked up your religious education ma-terials, they are now ready - including the November 15 Sunday Gospel Weeklies. Contact Lori Tajchman to make arrangements for a pick up soon.

In the Religious Education Department, we are moni-toring the rapidly growing numbers of Covid infection in our area, and are able to move to a virtual format if needed.

Sometimes it can be a challenge for parishioners who are older and/or have mobility problems to attend weekend Mass easily. The walk from the car may be too long or the stairs difficult to navigate. At our Saturday 5:00pm Masses vol-

unteers from our HELPING HANDS MINISTRY will pro-vide assistance to those needing some extra help reach-ing the sanctuary on the upper level of the building to attend Mass. To use this service, please make a reservation. This en-sures that we have enough volunteers available. Please follow the steps below. 1 A few days before you plan to attend the 5:00pm Sat-

urday Mass, make a reservation by calling Daryl Sweetland in the parish office, 781-4343, extension 200, by 4:00pm on Friday. Leave a message on her voice mail if you are unable to talk with her personally.

2 When arriving at the church, park in one of the spaces on the south side of the church or behind the church as close to the south side as possible.

3 Enter the lower level of the church through the south door (near the dumpster). There will be a HELPING HANDS ENTRANCE sign near the door.

4 Take a seat in a chair near the door and a volunteer will be available shortly to assist you to your seat in the church; wheelchairs are available if needed.

After Mass, a volunteer will assist you in returning to the lower level.

This service available only for the 5pm Saturday Mass
