Children’s Liturgy of the Word

On the first Sunday of every month, at the 11:00 a.m. Mass, children (ages 4 to grade level 2) are invited to participate in the Liturgy of the Word. During the Mass, the children will be escorted to the basement of the Church after the Opening Prayer. Here they will sing, hear the Sunday’s reading on their own level and share a reflection. They will be returned to their families during the Final Blessing of the Mass.

Please join us for the Children’s Liturgy on Sunday, December 4th

A Note from the Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso

Happy New Year! 2017 has been named the Year of Grace by the Holy Father. In a year of Grace the Church invites us to consider and to make present in our lives the saving events in the Lord’s life: his teaching, his mighty works but most of all his passion, death and resurrection. One way to do this is to follow the Liturgical calendar to make these events alive in our lives. We do this by being aware of the year, the week and the day. There are two cycles to the liturgical year: the temporal cycle and the sanctoral cycle. The temporal cycle follows the seasons. Now we begin with the season of Advent which anticipates the mystery of Christ — God coming to us as a human being. The mystery of the incarnation which we will celebrate at the Christmas season. The seasons are marked by the weeks, starting with the Lord’s day which celebrates his sacrifice and resurrection. The sanctoral cycle asks us to consider the lives of Mary and the saints. They are like our family members. You may have a family member who displayed heroic virtue of some sort. In my family I remember my grandmother, my mother and my aunt who loved me even though I was bratty at times. The saints are like those family members. They and we are of the household of God, as St Paul wrote (Eph 2:19). That is why we honor them for the heroic virtue they lived as an example and encouragement to us in our daily lives. The holy Season of Advent is a time of waiting, like the generations of Israelites waited for the coming of the Messiah. In our lives we await the coming of the Lord to deepen our relationship with Him. It is a time of penance as well. We recall the year of Mercy we just ended and continue our works of mercy. It is also a time of repentance. We recall John the Baptist and his call for repentance to make straight the way of the Lord (Is 40:3). So we are also called to repentance. In the past there have been penance services but I found them not to be useful here at St. James. At the same time the need for repentance is there for all of us. Those who say they have not sinned, St John calls them “liars” (1Jn 1:10). We have confessions on Saturdays at 3 pm before the 4 pm Mass. As last year I will be available for confessions after weekday Masses. Also during Eucharistic Adoration, which is on Thursday from 3 pm to 6 pm ending with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. During Adoration I will be in the confessional in the first hour and in the last hour. Also I will be available by prior appointment. I’m sure that Msgr Cole and Msgr Szymanski will make themselves available when they are here as well. I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year.
