Rediscovering the Sacred: Our Challenge in Ordinary Time This weekend as we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, we return to Ordinary Time until we begin the great season of Lent on March 6. The name of the season, of course, is because we count the Sundays of the Liturgical year in or-der (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.), and not because the Church year is plain ordinary outside of the other seasons (Advent, Lent, Christmas, Easter).

One way we can prevent Ordinary Time from becoming mundane is to commit to continuously Rediscover the Sa-cred around us each time we enter our churches.

For example, when we walked into the church before Mass today, we approached the holy water font, dipped our fin-ger in and blessed ourselves making the sign of the cross. When we did this, did we recognize that we were professing our faith in the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Did we recall that one day we too received the sacrament of baptism, washing away the stain of original sin and giving us the status as an adopted child of the Father? Or was the action of the reminder of our own baptism just a routine we’ve become accustomed to when we enter the church?

A good practice to commit (or re-commit, if we’ve fallen out of it) ourselves to is the daily renewal of our baptismal promises. On December 27, 2014 I had the most powerful renewal of my baptismal promises to date. While on pilgrimage with my seminary in the Holy Land, we stopped at the River Jordan and, in the place traditionally believed to be where Jesus was baptized by St. John the Baptist, my seminarian brothers and I renewed our baptismal promises. Frequently, whether individually or as a family, we should be renewing our baptismal promises as a way to remind ourselves that we are marked for Jesus Christ. We are people set apart, called to bring the Gospel to the world around us: our schools, our places of work, our neighborhoods, and our homes.

By our baptisms, we are made temples of the Holy Spirit, and as such we are sacred in the sight of our Father. May we never lose sight of this, and may we thank God often for the gift of being adopted into His family through our own baptism, modeled for us by His Son’s obedience.

God bless. Fr. Kevin

Dear Parishioners, Last Friday we celebrated 3 years of full outreach in our community, helping the most in need in Peabody. Hundreds of: meals have been served, Sunday bag lunches have been distributed, visits to our St. Teresa of Calcutta clothing center have been made, and assistance with social service applica-tions, appointments, and transportation. Our computer lab is up and running, and classes are well attended to build resumes and acquire skills in this technology. Thank YOU, for your prayers and support have made this all possible for so many.

Continued needs: For men and women: New toiletries of any type, new white crew socks, sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, long Johns, gloves, jeans or sweatpants, gently used sneakers, shoes, or boots. All donations can be dropped off at St. John’s Parish Center, Monday to Friday, from 9:30-3:30pm OR in a bin marked “for outreach program” in the upper church foyer after weekend masses. For St. Thomas parishioners, donations may be left at the Spiritual Center during the week. If you need further infor-mation, please call Outreach Coordinator Pat Adam at (978) 335-2080.

PARISH AND COMMUNITY EVENTS

Have Compassion for the Elderly? Make a friendly, weekly home visit to a Greater Lynn Senior Visit an isolated senior in his/her home once a week to offer companionship, empathy, and advocacy. Watch TV, play a game, or just enjoy a nice chat; no personal care, errands, or housework involved. You’ll also learn about services and sup-port that also might be helpful to the senior with whom you'll be matched. Training and supervision is provided. While the time you spend each week modest (one to one and half hours at most), we ask for a one-year commitment to the program to help relationship building. Reliable vehicle needed. To volunteer or learn more, please contact: Linda Anderson, Catholic Charities (781)593-2312 X215 [email protected]

Enjoy Reception/Phone Work?

• Volunteer just 4 hours/week

• Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Mornings 9am-1pm

Our front desk is either quite busy or the opposite—quite quiet, enough so that you can read a book, magazine, or do your crossword puzzles. You will greet visitor and direct callers using an easy-to-learn system; training provided. Volunteers typically commit to one 4-hour shift per week for at least a year. To volunteer or learn more, please contact: Linda Anderson, Catholic Charities (781)593-2312 X215 [email protected]

"They will know we are Christians by our…."How will they know you are a Christian? by the theology you know, your

home, your church attendance, your expressed morality or way in which you serve Him? Jesus said, “By THIS everyone will

know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” -John 13:35, He said this in the context of a moment when he was

doing something so shocking, even his closest followers could not understand it, but it showed the full extent of his love; he washed the disciple's feet. This was love, demonstrated by

hospitality before the Passover meal. He didn’t have to do it. Yet that is the nature of hospitality; unforced acts of love.

Hospitality in the Greek translates from the combination of two words: philo (love) and xenos (stranger), or literally, to love

the stranger. Join us and meet the stranger who we are called to love. Come and see the Alpha Program and own your Chris-

tianity- Listen, break bread and enjoy a light meal, and then share how you felt about what you heard.

The Alpha Program begins on Thursday, January 17 at 6:30PM in the

Fr. Dan Spiritual Life Center at St. Thomas Parish. Have you done it before, come again, be a table leader or just come and learn something new!

CatholicTV Mass!

Fr Kevin will be celebrating the TV Mass at 11am, Monday February 11 at the

CatholicTV studios in Watertown. If you’re interested in being part of the

congregation please call the parish offices by Wednesday February 6 so they can have a head count. We will try to have the group leave from St John’s that

morning and caravan down. Time TBA

PARENTS: Come to our 10 AM Mass! These are our Family Masses for all kinds of families.

Relax! God put the wiggle in children; do not feel you have to suppress it in God’s house.

All are welcome! Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little

ones to see and hear what is going on in the sanctuary.

Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and the actions of the priest, altar servers, cantor, lector, etc. Children’s missals are available at the back of the church to help your little ones understand the order of the Mass.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice your responds loudly and clearly. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. Need to step out for a moment with your child during Mass? Please do so freely as needed. We have a children's corner with a rocker and kiddie's books. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me!”

To all Members of Our Parishes: Remember: the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond. Let them know that they can feel at home in God’s house. The presence of children is a gift to the Church. They are a reminder that our parish is growing. Your church is their church as well. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encourage-ment to them and to their parents.

NEW! On the following Sundays, our parishes will offer a Children's Liturgy of the Word at our 10 AM Family Masses for all children in grades 1 through 6. Children from both public and Catholic schools are invited.

Dates for Children's Liturgy of the Word (in both parishes):

March 31, and April 14, 2019.

On these Sundays, children will come with family to Mass on these days at 10AM. * Children will leave the main church after the opening prayer. * They will go to the chapel or church hall to hear and learn about the Scripture readings in a way they can understand. * They will return to their families in church at the offertory.

Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? Or Completing Your Sacraments?

Are you interested in joining the Catholic Church? Do you have a family member or friend who is curious about the

Catholic Faith? Are you already Baptized, but haven’t received First Holy

Communion or Confirmation?

Throughout the year, we offer sessions in which we discuss the basic practices and teachings of the Church. We also read scripture togeth-er and consider difficult issues of the Faith. At the Easter Vigil, par-

ticipants may step forward to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, and/or Eucharist and Confirmation, and are welcomed into the Church.

We hope you will consider joining us on your faith journey. Even if you feel you are not ready, or have questions or reservations about the

Catholic Church, we welcome you. There is no pressure or “recruiting,” and we promote open and honest discussion.

To learn more about these sessions (RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults),

please contact Fr. John MacInnis at 978-531-0002.

From the time that we were young kids growing up in Dorchester receiving First Communion, through our marriage, as we brought up our own four boys, and now as grandparents, Boston priests have been a guiding light that we reach out to in different situations that have come up in our lives. As parents, our faith life has helped us to guide our family. We are an ordinary family, and, like all families, things don’t always go smoothly. The priests we have known through the years, like Fr. Peter Martocchio, have helped us to learn to take things in stride and put our faith in God, and that there is always hope. While not perfect, ours has been a wonderful life, which has been enriched by many Boston priests who have helped us along the way.
