Luke’s gospel relates, on this Third Sunday of Easter, the secondpart of the story in which two disciples encountered the risen Lordon their way to a town called Emmaus. Jesus had walked withthem explaining all the scriptures that had referred to him. Theyhad invited him in their home and they came to know him in the
“Breaking of the Bread” which the early church called the Eucharist. Thedisciples got up that very night and returned to Jerusalem. They recountedtheir story and suddenly Jesus was in their midst again. I often think aboutthis gospel when I try to imagine what our life will be after we are raisedfrom the dead. Jesus body is real. He says, “Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I, myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have fleshand bones as you can see I have” (Luke 24:39-40). His body was real andyet he could disappear. His physicalness had changed, his body had beencompletely glorified. His wounds were still visible, the price of ourforgiveness. “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from thedead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins wouldbe preached in his name to all the nations.... You are witnesses of thesethings.” Hopefully, we are still witnesses to these things, especially to theforgiveness of sins. We witness that by asking for forgiveness both fromGod and each other and in turn forgive others. There are many things towhich we are to give witness, but the forgiveness of sins is right up there atthe top of the list. “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those whotrespass against us.” (Luke 24:46-48).

Stewardship Moment – “Jesus himself stood amongthem and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ But theywere startled and frightened...” Luke 24:36-37Throughout the day we have many opportunities to “seethe face of Jesus” in others and to “be the face of Jesus”to others. Do we take that opportunity to provide “peace”to those we encounter or are we afraid of what otherswill think of us and do nothing? Pray for the strength tolive a “God-centered” life and not a “self-centered” life.
