FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ MAY 3, 2015

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION—MAY 8-9 Saint Joseph Church will welcome Bishop Dominic Marconi who will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday, May 8 at 7:00 pm and on Saturday, May 9 at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. Please keep our young people being confirmed in your prayers.

One of the gladdest and most revered of our Catholic traditions is the devotion we pay to the Mother of God during May, a time of year

when the freshness and beauty of new life surrounds us in the world of nature and when the treasured reality of all that God promises us seems especially delightful.

In the Gospels, we first encounter Mary at the Annunciation in Luke 1, 26-38, when she is a young woman, in all likelihood still a teenage girl. The

Archangel Gabriel visits her at her home in Nazareth and astonishes her with the message that God wishes her to become the mother of his Son, who is to be called Jesus (“God saves”). Although Mary is, understandably, deeply puzzled by this call, her response is the full and simple assent that has never been surpassed as a summary of what it means to believe: “Let it be done to me according to your word” (v. 38). This means, of course, that she will always be the standard against which our own faith is measured. Caryll Houselander, one of the great spiritual writers of recent times, expressed this thought marvelously and challengingly when she wrote that

Our Lady said yes for the human race. Each one of us must echo that yes for our lives. We are all asked if we will surrender what we are, our humanity, our flesh and blood, to the Holy Spirit and allow Christ to fill the emptiness formed by the particular shape of our life.

But for us Mary is not merely someone to be greatly admired or someone who proposes the highest kind of ideals to us. She is also someone we turn to with the complete confidence that she will have affectionate concern for us and will be happy to help us in our needs. St. John’s account of how she came to the aid of the young couple at Cana when their wedding reception ran out of wine (John 2, 1-11) was already a promise of this beautiful care. And how can we forget the powerful scene at Calvary (in John 19, 26-27) when the dying Jesus handed Mary over to John to be his mother and, by clear implication, ours too? St. Anselm of Canterbury was a man of the Middle Ages, a time well known for its ardent veneration of Mary. He composed this heartfelt prayer, which I hope you will enjoy and use during some of these days of May:

Mary, I beg you, by that grace through which the Lord is with you and you willed to be with him, let your mercy be with me. Let love for you always be with me, and the care of me always be with you. Let the cry of my need, as long as it persists, be with you, and the care of your goodness, as long as I need it, be with me. Let joy in your blessedness be always with me, and compassion for my wretchedness, where I need it, be with you.

Msgr. David Hubba

MARY, THE MOTHER OF COMPASSION Mary has a special love and sensitivity for all God’s children. This was manifested on many occasions but was most pronounced at the wedding feast of Cana in which she interceded for the bride and groom when the supply of wine was depleted at their celebration. DONATE CLOTHING/SHOES

We can imitate that sensitivity to the needs of others by donating any unwanted clothing and shoes to Catholic Charities. The collection bin is located in the parking lot of the parish office/rectory on

Harrison Street. Thank you.

BRING FLOWERS OF THE RAREST You will have two opportunities to witness the traditional May Crowning of our statue of the Blessed Mother: on Sunday, May 17 at the 9:00 am Mass
