Francis, March 4th, 2015. A NEW PARISH MINISTRY ,
Serving Our Seniors is in the development stages. Our vision
is to identify the needs of the elderly in our parish and then
work with all of our parish groups, our school and our
families to meet the needs of our elderly parishioners. A visit to
an elderly person, a meal, a card, doing a needed errand or
giving assistance to an elderly person at church can make the
difference in a life. Everyone needs care and attention. If you
would like to be a part of this ministry or know of an elderly
parishioner who needs assistance, please call Gloria Morris at
864-934-2344 ([email protected]). There is no greater gift
you can give yourself than to be of service to others.

JUSTICE, PEACE AND INTEGRITY OF CREATION (JPIC)
There is a centuries old holiday tradition called Las Posadas. It is usually celebrated over the nine days leading
up to Christmas. It began in Spain and came to the Americas through Mexico. It is observed in the
Southwestern part of the United States as well.
Las Posadas symbolizes the Biblical journey of Joseph and Mary seeking shelter in Bethlehem. A procession
including Mary, Joseph and a troop of carolers make their way through the town. After being rebuffed at
many doors, they come to the house designated for the evening’s festivities. When they approach,
the carolers sing out: those inside the house respond:
In the name of heaven This is no inn
I ask for shelter continue on your way
because my beloved wife I am not about to open
can continue no longer. You may be a scoundrel.
After several more stanzas, Joseph and Mary are allowed to enter. While it is a charming tradition, it is useless
unless it speaks to us today. We are a Biblical people. Look at the drama and see what part you are willing to
play. Do you stay behind closed doors ignoring the knock? Do you open the door—just a crack—and let your
fear and suspicion control the moment? Like the householder, you may not recognize the Lord when He is
outside your door. In the end, do you let the Lord enter with joyful song and rejoicing? The choice is yours.
The poinsettia is a tradition more familiar to South Carolinians. Its use in Christmas decorations was
introduced by Franciscan Friars in Mexico. There is a sweet legend that a young girl was distraught on
Christmas Eve because she had nothing to give the Christ child. As she walked to church, an angel appeared
and told her to pick the grasses and weeds along the road and give those. When she presented them, they
changed into the glorious red flowers we know as poinsettias. Like many legends it has a message for us. Do
we look at what we can offer back to God and see only weeds? Can we bring ourselves to trust God will turn
our gifts into something more beautiful than we ever imagined if we just offer them to Him?
Have a Christmas filled with Peace and Joy!!
