FEAST OF SAINT JOSEPH SPOUSE OF

THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

—MARCH 19

“Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord

appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David,

do not be afraid to take Mary your wife

into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit

that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,

because he will save his people from their sins." Matthew 1: 18-25

MASSES FOR SOLEMNITY OF SAINT JOSEPH MONDAY, MARCH 19: 7:00 am, 8:30 am (morning)

7:30 pm (evening) Parishioners are cordially invited to join us for a traditional St. Joseph Day pastry AFTER THE 8:30 MORNING MASS.

READING TOGETHER EXPLORE THE HISTORICAL JESUS

WITH FR. JOSEPH Our own Fr. Joseph Montes de Oca invites all interested parishioners to join him in

reading Jesus: An Historical Approximation by Jose A. Pagola. Fr. Joseph will guide us through this fascinating book one chapter at a time beginning on April 9. The author, a professor at St. Sebastian Seminary and at the Faculty of Theology in Northern Spain, has done research on the historical Jesus for more than 30 years. He presents a lively and passionate narrative of Jesus of Nazareth within the milieu of the first century, locating him in his social, economic, political and religious contexts. The group will meet for ten weeks on Mondays from 6:00—7:00 pm in the Jackson Room in the lower church on the following days: April 9, 16, 23, 30; May 7, 14, 21, 28; June 4, 11. The cost of the book is $30. (Checks should be made out to “Saint Joseph Church” and be included when registering. ) To register, call the Parish Office at 201-261-0148 and drop off or mail your check to 105 Harrison Street, New Milford, NJ 07646.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 18, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Throughout the Old Testament God’s mercy is consistently and generously shown to Israel even in the face of the provocation of

its repeated sins. This is particularly apparent in the exodus narratives, including in a memorable incident in Nb 21, where the people complain of the privations of their desert journey and, as a result, suffer a punishment of attacks from poisonous seraph serpents. God tells Moses to make an image of the snake and place it on a pole “and if anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover” (v. 8). Moses complies and the merciful results directly follow. This is the context for Jesus’s remark that “just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life” (Jn 3, 14-15), clearly a prediction of his coming death on the cross, by which we have been saved from eternal ruin. Mike Aquilina and his niece Grace have recently written A History of the Church in 100 Objects, a fascinatingly informative and very entertaining exploration of Catholicism through brief accounts and comments on everything from Michelangelo’s Pieta to the compass Columbus used on his voyages. At one point they take note of the crosses crusader pilgrims carved into a stairway wall leading to the lower chapel of Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, long believed to mark the place of Our Lord’s death and resurrection. This leads them to observe that

Throughout most of subsequent history, the crusaders have been remembered with honor. “Crusade” was a metaphor for the passionate advocacy of a good cause. More recently, however, crusaders have been cast as greedy opportunists foreshadowing the later colonial powers.

The authors point out that the Crusades were basically defensive actions against the Islamic conquests of the 7th and 8th centuries, which seized two-thirds of once-Christian lands. By the 11th century, Christians were persecuted and enslaved by Egyptian and Turkish Muslims, who also threatened the Byzantine Empire, leading its ruler to desperately beg Pope Urban II for help from the Christian West. (continued above)

Most of the crusaders went to defend the holy places out of religious motives, such as doing penance for sins and rescuing their fellow believers They certainly didn’t go to get rich. The voyage to the Holy Land was expensive, costing close to $250,000 in today’s money, and many crusaders had to take out loans or even go into bankruptcy to participate. Many went knowing they would never be able to return home. The Aquilinas make a sound judgment on them when they write that

The Crusades were a popular Christian movement that lasted five hundred years. Thousands made the voyage. So it is certainly possible to find examples of crusaders who went astray and perpetrated crimes. But they were never the norm—and they were always condemned by their fellow Christians and by legitimate Church authorities. To portray the crusaders as adventurers, profiteers, or proto- colonialists is unjust, untrue, and anachronistic.

The novelist Evan Connell, in his 2000 work Deus Lo Volt!: Chronicle of the Crusades, has a wonderful tribute to the remarkable man who became ruler of Jerusalem after the knights of the First Crusade, against all odds, freed it from Muslim control in 1099:

… [B]y virtue of lofty character and noble lineage, Godfrey de Bouillon was elected to defend and rule the Holy City of Jerusalem. This responsibility he accepted, but declined to wear a crown of gold in the city where Jesus Christ had worn a crown of thorns. The title he chose for himself was Advocate of the Holy Sepulcher.

I don’t know whether Bergen Catholic has had any pressure to abandon its nickname of “the Crusaders.” In today’s often fevered concern to topple traditional values and usages without any serious consideration of the historical context of the past, it might happen soon if it hasn’t already. If it does, I hope the students and alumni of Bergen Catholic will show the brave spirit of the crusaders by opposing any such assault on a truly noble heritage.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 18, 2018

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “I will be their God and they shall be my people.”

Jeremiah 31:33 What does it mean to be God’s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us.
