High School Orthodox Life Bill Orosz and Warren Baker Today we continued our discussion and review of ldquoOrthodoxy and Hetero-doxyrdquo specifically Chapter 7 ndash Non-Mainstream Christians We reviewed be-liefs and false teachings of Unitarian Universalists Swedenborgianists and Mormons Among these groups Mormons are most numerous and influential in America Students were reminded to finalize their preparation for the 2018 Oratorical Festival We also discussed that today (Cheesefare Forgiveness) opens the door to Great Lent as we reflect upon the words of Christ in Mark 6 If you forgive men their trespasses your heavenly Father will also forgive you but if you forgive not men their trespasses neither will your Father forgive your trespasses The class and GOYA selected February 28th to attend and participate in the Presanctified Liturgy Attendance 16
My Beloved Ones I greet you with love and joy praying that God will bless you and your families always bestowing upon you good health wisdom peace and abundant joy as we approach the end of the first week of Great Lent This first Sunday of Great Lent observes the Sunday of Orthodoxy when the veneration of icons was restored to the Church in the year 483 after the many years of iconoclastic persecutions
MESSAGE FROM HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS
SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT FOR February 18th
~ Vision Statement ~ To be a community of engaged and educated young Orthodox Christians
~ Mission Statement ~ To encourage and foster spiritual growth of young people in our Orthodox Faith

When we discuss iconoclasm we often discuss what icons are not in order to defend the Orthodox position of veneration to the non-Orthodox However this sets aside what icons mean for us
From the beginning of creation itself we hear God say ldquoLet us make man in our image after our likenessrdquo (Genesis 126) For a creation that is so tied into the image of its Creator it is understandable that Man would hunger for ways to reflect that divinity and the holiness of His saints
The negative side of this impulse of course gave rise to the Israelites worship-ing the Golden Calf during their wanderings in the desert A consequence of this paganism gave rise to the Second Commandment ldquoThou shalt not make unto thee any graven imagerdquo The nature of this Commandment is that which gave and still gives many Christians the mistaken belief that icons constitute a violation of Godrsquos Law
However even the simplified analogy of veneration to honoring those we love through things such as photographs fails to capture the profoundness of this human impulse to see the divine
Only the holiest among us will be blessed to witness our Lord in this life And surely no person will ever be able to understand God within the confines of the human mind In short our lifelong goal of Theosis recognizes that man has a hungering to know God in the limited ways that are comprehensible to us God Himself recognizes this for if He did not His Son would not have taken on our flesh Christ came to earth in the form of a human being who is himself an icon of the living God God walked talked lived and breathed among His peo-ple Our Apostolic Church has its roots firmly established in those Apostles who had living encounters with the Second Person of the Holy Trinity
Therefore we celebrate the restoration of the icons this Sunday and honor those who fought and died for their restoration I pray that each of you shall join in this Sundayrsquos commemoration by following the examples of your clergy and young people Bring an icon of your patron saint and proclaim that which we witness to the entire world that icons are tools to teach the Faith objects to venerate our patron saints and feast days and perhaps most of all a means to witness our Lord and Savior in this earthly life before we stand at His Throne

FROM THE CHANCELLORrsquoS DESK
During Great Lent we are encouraged to seek to grow closer to God During this period there are many opportunities to do so albeit they involve making personal sacrifices that makes a difference When we focus on the Cross of our Lord and remind ourselves of His victory and what our Savior gave up for us how might we in turn respond Perhaps we could consider voluntarily ldquogiving uprdquo a few things in anticipation of the joy of His Kingdom Let us con-sider
GIVING UP grumbling Instead In everything give thanks Constructive criti-cism is OK but moaning groaning and complaining are not Christian disci-plines
GIVING UP 10 to 15 minutes in bed each morning Instead use that time in prayer Bible study and personal devotion A few minutes in prayer WILL keep you focused
GIVING UP looking at other peoples worst attributes Instead concentrate on their best points We all have faults It is a lot easier to have people overlook our shortcomings when we overlook theirs first
GIVING UP speaking unkindly Instead let your speech be generous and un-derstanding It costs so little to say something kind and uplifting or to offer a smile Why not check that sharp tongue at the door
GIVING UP your hatred of anyone or anything Instead learn the discipline of love Love covers a multitude of sins
GIVING UP your worries and anxieties Theyre too heavy for you to carry any-way Instead trust God with them Anxiety is spending emotional energy on something we can do nothing about like tomorrow Live today and let Gods grace be sufficient
GIVING UP TV one evening a week Instead visit someone whos lonely or sick There are those who are isolated by illness or age Why isolate yourself in front of the tube Give someone a precious gift your time
GIVING UP buying anything but essentials for yourself Instead give the mon-ey to God The money you would spend on the luxuries could help someone meet basic needs Were called to be stewards of Gods riches not consum-ers
15
There will be a sign up sheet by the Bakaliko for individuals to sign up to run it on Sundays We need 2 people each week If there is no one on a particular Sunday then it will not open for that day Bakaliko is not open during the week

9

From the Triodion
On this day the first Sunday of Lent we commemorate the restoration of
the holy and venerable icons enacted by the ever memorable Emperors of
Constantinople Michael and his mother Theodora during the patriar-
chate of Saint Methodius the Confessor
The Reading is from St Pauls Letter to the Hebrews 1124-26 32-40 BRETHREN by faith Moses when he was grown up refused to be called the son of Pharaohs daughter choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin And what more shall I say For time would fail me to tell of Gideon Barak Samson Jephthah of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith con-quered kingdoms enforced justice received promises stopped the mouths of lions quenched raging fire escaped the edge of the sword won

strength out of weakness became mighty in war put foreign enemies to flight Women received their dead by resurrection Some jealousy were tortured refusing to accept release that they might rise again to a better life Others suffered mocking and scourging and even chains and imprisonment They were stoned they were sawn in two they were killed with the sword they went about in skins of sheep and goats destitute afflicted ill-treated -- of whom the world was not wor-thy -- wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth And all these though well attested by their faith did not receive what was promised since God had foreseen something better for us that apart from us they should not be made perfect
The Reading is from The Gospel of John 143-52 The that time Jesus decided to go to Galilee And he found Philip and said to him Follow me Now Philip was from Bethsaida the city of Andrew and Peter Philip found Nathanael and he said to him We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote Jesus of Nazareth the son of Joseph Nathanael said to him Can anything good come out of Nazareth Philip said to him Come and see Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and said of him Behold an Israelite indeed in whom is no guile Nathanael said to him How do you know me Jesus answered him Before Philip called you when you were under the fig tree I saw you Nathanael answered him Rabbi you are the son of God You are the King of Isra-el Jesus answered him Because I said to you I saw you under the fig tree do you believe You shall see greater things than these And he said to him Truly truly I say to you you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man

strength out of weakness became mighty in war put foreign enemies to flight Women received their dead by resurrection Some jealousy were tortured refusing to accept release that they might rise again to a better life Others suffered mocking and scourging and even chains and imprisonment They were stoned they were sawn in two they were killed with the sword they went about in skins of sheep and goats destitute afflicted ill-treated -- of whom the world was not wor-thy -- wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth And all these though well attested by their faith did not receive what was promised since God had foreseen something better for us that apart from us they should not be made perfect

SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT FOR February 18th

THE JESUS PRAYER
Κύριε Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ Υἱέ Θεοῦ
