Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Throughout the years. Our local Church has benefited from the generosity of many parishioners who have left a legacy of support by including a gift to the Church in their will or trust. We are grateful for these extraordinary gifts that come to us after the donors’ lifetime bearing witness to the faith and ministries they supported and wished to pass on to the next generation of parishioners.

Many times, we are unaware of donors’ intentions to make these gifts and thus are unable to properly thank them for their commitment to the future of our Church. So, it is with great pleasure that I introduce the Society of Saint Joseph, which will allow us to thank and recognize all parishioners who have named a local parish, a Catholic elementary school, the Diocese of San Jose, or any ministry of the Diocese as beneficiaries of a gift (of any size) in their wills or trusts, retirement accounts or life insurance policies.

This weekend we continue to hear from the Letter to the Hebrews. We will hear from Hebrews until the last Sunday before the end of this Liturgical Year B. As early as the second century, this treatise bore the title “To the Hebrews.” It was assumed to be directed to Jewish Christians. Usually Hebrews was attached in Greek manuscripts to the collection of letters by Paul. Although no author is mentioned (for there is no address), a reference to Timothy suggested connections to the circle of Paul and his assistants. Yet the exact audience, the author, and even whether Hebrews is a letter have long been disputed. As early as the end of the second century, the church of Alexandria in Egypt accepted Hebrews as a letter of Paul, and that became the view commonly held in the East. Pauline authorship was contested in the West into the fourth century, but then accepted. In the sixteenth century, doubts about that position were again raised, and the modern consensus is that the letter was not written by Paul.

The author saw the addressees in danger of apostasy from their Christian faith. This danger was due not to any persecution from outsiders but to a weariness with the demands of Christian life and a growing indifference to their calling. Chances are you have the same feelings.

God’s is a word of power; not to be trifled with, not to be ignored. This text is more than a song of praise. It is also a word of warning. The word of God makes a difference, says they author; it achieves God’s will and penetrates to the deepest recesses of our being – “between soul and spirit” – and can judge the very “thoughts of the heart.” Because God’s word is Jesus himself, the mighty, eternal word who reigns at God’s right hand lays bare all that would lay hidden within us. For to him, we must make account for all that we do and all that we are.

Celebrating Saint Francis of Assisi and God’s Creat res By: Kelly Flores

Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School was filled with a different kind of excitement and joy on October 4th, surrounded by a crowd that only enhances the campus one very special day each year. This special day, was the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi, also known on campus as Blessing of the Animals Day. Each student was invited to bring their family pet, stuffed animal or photo of their pet, to school for the celebration. The school choir, led by Mrs. Scott, sang with grace and poise to Mr. Pingel’s acoustic guitar as the school community gathered around in preparation for the blessing. After the joyful singing, students from Kindergarten to 8th grade lined up with the microphone and read a passage about Saint Francis of Assisi, in celebration of his Feast Day. Parochial Vicar, Fr. Joseph, then walked through the crowd blessing the pets and students with Holy Water. Barking, quacking, fluttering and meowing raised through the crowd, followed by laughter and joy of the students.

Blessing of the Animals has been a tradition of Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School for as long as members of the community can remember. The format of pets joining the morning, parents and community members surrounding the classes with smiling faces, celebration of song and prayer ringing through the blacktop has stayed strong over the years, bringing memorable experiences to students, staff and the community as a whole. It is with this celebration of Saint Francis of Assisi and his work with animals, that we are left with the simple reminder to care for God’s creatures as they are meant for us to love and cherish!

“En aquel tiempo cuando Jesús salía al camino, se le acercó un hombre, se arrodilló ante él y le preguntó: Maestro bueno, ¿Qué debo hacer para alcanzar la vida eterna? (…) Una cosa te falta: anda, vende lo que tienes, da el dinero a los pobres y luego sígueme. A estas palabras, el joven frunció el ceño y se marchó apesadumbrado, porque era muy rico. Jesús, mirando alrededor, dijo a sus discípulos: ¡Qué difícil les va a ser a los ricos entrar en el reino de Dios!” … (Mc 10, 17-30)

La historia del joven rico ha sido interpretada a veces como la expresión de los dos caminos que habría en la vida cristiana: el del laico que busca la salvación cumpliendo los mínimos, es decir: observando los mandamientos; y el de aquellos otros que aspiran a algo más, a la consagración religiosa o sacerdotal, que exige un seguimiento más radical de Cristo.

No creo que esa interpretación sea correcta, porque para todos los cristianos rigen los mismos preceptos: los mandamientos por un lado y la ley del amor por otro. No es verdad que el camino del laico sea el del aprobado y el del religioso o sacerdote el del notable o el sobresaliente. Todos estamos llamados a la misma vocación, la de la santidad. A ella vamos a llegar cuando observamos los mandamientos -los mínimos- y cuando procuramos practicar la caridad -el máximo-. La caridad, el amor, es para todos y no sólo para unos cuantos elegidos. Es para todos los bautizados igualmente válido el precepto de amar a los enemigos, de dar limosna a quien lo necesita, de consolar al que sufre, de vestir al desnudo, de acompañar al solitario, de cumplir con las propias obligaciones, de poner en las propias espaldas algo del peso ajeno para que el prójimo pueda ver aliviada su carga. No hay un camino de segunda y uno de primera. Hay un solo camino cristiano: el del amor a Dios y al prójimo.

Propósito: Preguntarle al Señor cada día, en la oración: ¿Qué puedo hacer por ti? ¿qué puedo hacer por el prójimo? Examina tu conciencia sobre los pecados de omisión que has cometido, e intenta evitarlos.
