  • The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 27, 2020 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York

    ——————————————————————————————————————————————————

Dear Friends, I hope and pray that all of our parishioners were able to spend time with loved ones at

Christmas and that our visits were safe and blessed as we celebrated the birth of Jesus with family and friends. I thank everyone for your kindness and generosity at Christmas. The priests and staff are truly grateful for your greetings, cards, gifts and “goodies” that were sent to the rectory during these days. We are truly blessed here at St. Luke, and you can be assured of our gratitude and our prayers for all of you.

Just before Christmas, the City Council approved the re-naming of Locke Avenue in honor of our beloved former pastor, Monsignor Tosi. A date will be set in the spring to rename the street “Monsignor John C. Tosi Way.” It is my hope that Msgr. Tosi’s family will be able to be present for the event, and we can coordinate celebrating a Memorial Mass for him at the

same time. More information will be provided when it is available. I am grateful to the Monsignor Dillon Council of the Knights of Columbus and all those who supported and promoted this honor in memory of Monsignor Tosi. Today the Church celebrates the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The Holy Family

of Nazareth is a model for all families. The home in Nazareth is where Jesus experienced the love and support of Mary and Joseph. In January 1964, Pope St. Paul VI made a visit to Nazareth and gave an address about the inspiration he gained from his visit there: “Nazareth is a kind of school where we may begin to discover what Christ’s life was like and even to understand his Gospel. Here we can observe and ponder the simple appeal of the way God’s

Son came to be known, profound yet full of hidden meaning. And gradually we may even learn to imitate him.” He reflected on the importance of silence at Nazareth, since it is the place where Jesus learned from Mary and Joseph. “The silence of Nazareth should teach us how to meditate in peace and quiet, to reflect on the deeply spiritual, and to be open to the voice of God’s inner wisdom and the counsel of his true teachers.” St. Paul VI also remarked that Nazareth is a model of what the family should be: “[the family is] the perfect setting for

rearing children – and for this there is no substitute.” Finally, since Jesus was the son of a carpenter, Nazareth teaches the value and dignity of work. As we celebrate this feast of the Holy Family, may the love and peace of Jesus, Mary and Joseph bless all of the families here at St. Luke.

I want to remind everyone that this is the last weekend when we will celebrate Mass at 11:45 AM and 1:00 PM on Sundays. Beginning next weekend, Sunday, January 3, 2021, those Masses will be merged into one Mass to be celebrated at 12:00 Noon. I hope that parishioners will easily adapt to this schedule change, and I thank you for your understanding.

On behalf of the parish clergy and staff, I extend to all of our parishioners our prayers and blessings for a happy and healthy New Year! With love and prayers,

    Fr. John Costello

Dear Lord, Bless our family. Be so kind as to give us the unity, peace, and

mutual love that You found in Your own family in the little town of Nazareth. Saint Joseph, pray for the head of our family.

Obtain for him the strength, the wisdom, and the prudence he needs to support and direct those under his care.

Mother Mary, pray for the mother of our family. Help her to be pure and kind, gentle and self-sacrificing.

For the more she resembles you, the better will our family be. Lord Jesus, bless the children of our family.

Help them to be obedient and devoted to their parents. Make them more and more like You.

Let them grow, as You did. In wisdom and strength and grace before God and man. Holy Family of Nazareth, by your intercession, love, and holy example,

make our family and home more and more like Yours, until we are all one family, happy and at peace

in our true home with You. Amen.

    Prayer for Vocations

GOD OUR FATHER, we thank you for calling men and women to serve

in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious, and consecrated persons.

Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond

generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations

of sacrificial love in our youth.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

    Amen

MISSION STATEMENT As a community of believers in Jesus Christ and in Communion with the Universal Church,

we strive to follow the Lord’s command to love God and one another. Rooted in word and sacrament, we grow together as a Eucharistic community inviting all to the Good News of Jesus.

BLESSING OF THE HOUSE In celebration of the feast of The Epiphany Of The Lord

    January 3, 2021

At the end of the Mass next week, there will be the blessing of chalk which we shall use to bless our houses (this year, due to COVID restrictions,

we ask that you bring your own chalk from home). The number of the year indicated a prayer for God’s blessing as this year begins.

The letters C M B refer to the three travelers who visited the holy house - Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar but also are the initials of the Latin words,

“Christus, mansionem, benedicat.” - “May Christ bless this house.” So we use the chalk to mark our front door: 20 + C + M + B + 21.

    House Blessing

    20 + C + M + B + 21 Lord God of heaven and earth,

you revealed your only begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star.

Bless this home all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ,

That our concern for others may reflect your love.

We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
