Over the past few weeks the topic of Syria has domi-nated our nation’s political discourse and garnered attention around the world. The horrible civil war

there continues to rage and we abhor the use of chemical weapons. We long for peace and cry out for justice. However, Pope Francis and our bishops have pointed out that the path of violence leads to neither peace nor justice. It simply produces more violence. I would like to share some excerpts from the letter the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued in support of the Pope’s urging against military inter-vention in Syria. Please take the time to read these important words and pray over them.

…Chemical weapons have no place in the arsenals of the family of nations. There is no doubt that the use of chemical weapons in Syria was a heinous crime against humanity. As Pope Fran-cis declared: “With utmost firmness I condemn the use of chemical weapons: I tell you that those terrible images from recent days are burned into my mind and heart. There is a judgment of God and of history upon our actions which are inescapable!”

Tragically, the deaths from chemical weapons are only part of the grievous story of Syria these days. More than 100,000 Syri-ans have lost their lives. More than 2 million have fled the country as refugees. More than 4 million within Syria have been driven from their homes by violence. A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in Syria. We call upon our nation and the international community to save lives by pressing for seri-ous dialogue to end the conflict, by refraining from fueling further violence with military attacks or arms transfers, and by offering more humanitarian assistance.

We have heard the urgent calls of our Holy Father, Pope Fran-cis, and our suffering brother bishops of the venerable and ancient Christian Churches of the Middle East. As one, they beg the international community not to resort to military inter-vention in Syria. They have made it clear that a military attack will be counterproductive, will exacerbate an already deadly situation, and will have unintended negative consequences…

…we make our own the appeal of Pope Francis: “I exhort the international community to make every effort to promote clear proposals for peace in that country without further delay, a peace based on dialogue and negotiation, for the good of the entire Syrian people. May no effort be spared in guaranteeing humanitarian assistance to those wounded by this terrible con-flict, in particular those forced to flee and the many refugees in nearby countries."

…Instead of employing armed force, our nation should work with the international community and direct all of its consider-

able diplomatic capabilities to initiate dialogue and negotia-tion. The use of force is always a last resort, and it should only be employed by legitimate authority in accordance with inter-national norms. The lack of international and domestic con-sensus in this case is deeply troubling. Recent international proposals to secure and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons de-serve serious consideration, evaluation and encouragement.

We affirm the longstanding position of our Conference of Bish-ops that the Syrian people urgently need a political solution. We ask the United States to work with other governments to obtain a ceasefire, initiate serious negotiations, provide impar-tial humanitarian assistance, and encourage efforts to build an inclusive society in Syria that protects the rights of all its citi-zens, including Christians and other minorities.

The situation in Syria is complex and the human suffering all too real. Let us lend our voices and our prayers in tangible support for the way of peace and for the values of the Gospel. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an email to [email protected].

Three Faiths, One Place: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the Holy Land

Presented by Fr. Thomas A. Baima, S.T.D

Thursday, October 10, 2013 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Parish Center Meeting Rooms

Judaism, Christianity and Islam are collectively known as "Abrahamic religions" because they each understand their history as related to the covenant God made with Abraham. These three faiths are all mono-theistic, which means they believe in one God worshiped by Abraham. They do, however, differ in important aspects of their beliefs. The Middle East is the cradle of the world's three monotheistic faiths: Ju-daism, Christianity and Islam. Today, all three religious groups have roots, communities, and holy sites in Israel, West Bank and Jordan. Pilgrims continue to visit the Holy Land to connect with sites from the origin of their faith. In this evening presentation, learn more about these three world faiths, their history and connection to the Holy Land.

Maintenance Update Most of the major construction elements of our campus maintenance and beautification plans have been completed, with only landscaping and “punch-up list” items remaining. There is one large project, the widening of our main driveway, which has yet to begin. The status of that project follows:

Main Driveway Our permit application to widen the main driveway and add gravel shoulders was rejected by Lake County. At some point after the site plans for the new church were approved the zoning on our land was changed to agricultural. This limits the amount of impervious surface area we can have on our property. Our current use of the land (buildings, parking lot, driveway, etc.) exceeds this new limit. Although what we already have in place has been “grandfathered,” any changes to impervious surfaces have to either bring us into compliance or go through the lengthy process of requesting a zoning variance. We are working with county agencies on what needs to be done in order for a permit to be issued. We still have hope that this can be resolved and that the contractor can complete the work before asphalt plants close for the season. However, this timing is far from certain at this point. We will continue to update you as this matter progresses. We are extremely grateful to the many people who so generously have made donations to assist us with our maintenance beautification pro-jects. To-date, all of the work performed has been paid for by specific gifts from parishioners and not from parish operating funds. However, we are still in need of additional funding for the widening of the drive-way as donations for this project currently only cover part of the cost. We welcome donations of any size to help us with this work. If you would like to contribute, simply mark a plain envelope with “Driveway Project” and place your gift in the Sunday collection basket. Thank you again for your generosity!

Immigration Reform – a Biblical Mandate When some hear talk about immigration reform they immediately avoid the topic ,dismissing it simply as a political issue. At the root of immi-gration reform, however, is the biblical mandate to respect every hu-man person and to act with justice. As Christians we cannot turn our back on the ill treatment of immigrants and unfair practices that de-stroy the well being of a family. How immigration policies are formu-lated and how they are enforced is the work of government. But as Christians we cannot turn away from our moral obligation that requires us to act justly and with respect for the dignity of every human person made in the image and likeness of God. This may require of us to speak up to our government officials. The Bishops of the United States are not writing the script for immigration reform; they are calling disci-ples to study the issues carefully and to form their conscience on a matter that affects the entire human family regardless of national ori-gin.

“How Do You Grow Really Good Corn”

I don’t know how many of you like sweet corn, but I hap-pen to be one individual who can’t wait for the summer crop to hit the roadside vegetable stands and supermarkets and becomes a little anxious at the thought of the harvest season coming to an end. As unlikely as the growing of corn may be on improving our God given lives, I do believe there is a life lesson to be gleaned from growing those delicious yellow and white pillows of indescribable flavor. Every time I take a bite out of those delicious kernels, I muse that God, who has created all that is good, had to be present when the Iroquois Indi-ans gave the first sweet corn (called Papoon) to European settlers in 1779.

To amplify my thoughts on the life’s lesson that may be gleaned through the growing of corn, I present the “Parable of Growing Good Corn.” There was a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his delicious corn in the state fair where he won many blue ribbons. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are growing corn in competition with yours each year” the reporter asked? “Why sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know that the wind picks up pol-len from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.” The farmer was well aware of the connectedness of life. His corn couldn’t improve unless his neighbor’s corn also im-proved.

So it is in other aspects of life. Those who chose to be at peace must help their neighbors be at peace. Those who live well must help others to live well, for the real value in life is measured by the lives one positively touches. Those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness, for the welfare of each of us is bound up with the wel-fare of all of us. The lesson for us in this: If we are to grow good corn, we must also help our neighbors grow good corn.

Friends in Christ, what will you do today, not tomorrow, next week or next month, but today to help your neighbor grow good corn, live in peace, or to be happier? It’s up to you, if you want good corn (a good and blessed life) you have to insure that those around you grow good

Featured CD for September “Evangelizing Catholics” by Scott Hahn In this informative and dynamic presentation, Dr. Scott Hahn dis-cusses why the New Evangelization is the greatest priority of the Church at this time, and how we are all called to share our faith. He shows how the Eucharist relates to explaining Jesus' death and resurrection, and how Blessed John Paul II's called for a New Evangelization must be based on the Eucharist. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.

New Kiosk for Great Catholic Resources! Be sure to check out the new kiosk in the parish narthex. The new double-sided kiosk now holds even more great Catholic CDs, books and other fantastic resources. It’s a great way to renew ex-citement for your faith and find materials to share with friends and family. Two sides full of great resources!

Meditation Garden Memorial Pavers

The St. Mary of the Annunciation Meditation Garden is designed to provide a serene place for prayer and meditation. With the inclusion of our Holy Family and St. Francis of Assisi shrines together with many varieties of beautiful plants, trees and shrubs, the medi-tation garden provides a welcoming environment for prayer and reflection.

In celebrating our 150th Anniversary, we want to continue the work started in the past to enhance this sacred space, honor those who went before us, and leave a lasting legacy for those who will come after. Therefore, we will again be installing another phase of engraved paver stones along the pathways of our meditation garden.

You can be a part of this beautiful garden by purchasing one or more engraved pavers. You may wish to mark the year you joined St. Mary, remember a deceased loved one, or show your joy as our parish celebrates 150 years of praising God and sharing our faith in Jesus Christ. Even if you have participated in a previous phase of pavers for the garden, you may have others you now wish to remember or new blessings to celebrate during this special jubilee year.

Two sizes of pavers are available. Up to four lines of text may be engraved on the 6”x12” paver. Up to eight lines of text may be engraved on the 12”x12” paver. Seven-teen characters are allowed per line, including punctuation and spaces.

GARDEN CONCEPT The centerpiece of our meditation garden is a sculpture of the Holy Family. Engraved paver stones lead to this shrine and provide an outdoor gathering area for the com-munity. From this central area, gravel walking paths move outward, meandering through the field. The shrine of St. Francis of Assisi is another key focal point in the garden where you’ll find a meditation bench for private prayer. GARDEN SYMBOLISM In many ways, a garden and its season symbolize our Christian experience from the dawn of creation to the present day, from birth to life to death to rebirth. Springtime In Spring, the garden bursts forth with variety, abundance and bloom similar to the way the creation must have unfolded when God crafted our meticulous perfect world, and us in it. The beauty and feelings of contentment and happiness a garden gives us is a powerful yet inadequate glimpse of what life must have been like in the Garden of Eden when humanity enjoyed a world of paradise in fellowship with God. Fall & Winter In the Fall and Winter, flowers wither and plants die, and what was once alive and full of life fades away. The ground becomes barren and we sense a loss of something dear. This is a reminder of original sin, the fall from grace, banishment from the Garden, death and life without God. Spring & Summer In Spring and Summer, the garden reawakens as a place of beauty and happiness. Na-ture’s power overcomes the harshness of winter as it mysteriously resurrects life from the ground and plants return to their full glory. The sun and rain feed the garden, sus-taining it and giving it the ability to thrive. This parallels the victory Christ won for us over sin and death through his Resurrection. We are sustained by the power of his promise never to forsake those who believe in him. Nourished by the gift of his word and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we anxiously await the day when he will return to restore his Kingdom and rule over his people.

Engraving Guidelines Print clearly in capital letters what you would like engraved on your paver(s), one letter per space. Spaces and punctuation marks (such as com-mas and apostrophes) each count as one letter. You do not have to use all spaces or lines available. We will center each line of text on the paver. St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish reserves the right to edit text and de-termine the location of all pavers. In order to ensure harmony among the engraved messages on the pavers, some suggested engravings are shown at right. For Parishioners: Family or Individual Pavers One for an entire family or one for each member of the family with the year you joined the parish. Memorial Paver: Dates are not placed on memorial pavers. For Friends of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish: Individual, Business or Organization
