EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED If it ever crossed your mind that Jesus was somewhat lacking in a sense of humor, today’s Gospel should belie any such notion. Jesus’ story of the five wise and five foolish brides-maids is downright hilarious. The circumstances of the story were surely familiar to Jesus’ listeners, just as they are—if we think about it—to us. Weddings never, ever start on time. There’s always a delay. Buttons pop off at the last minute. Flow-ers wilt. Cars full of wedding guests get caught in traffic. Soloists contract laryngitis. Brides or grooms or priests show up late! So the only reasonable way to approach a wedding is with a sense of humor, to realize that something probably will go awry, and, when that happens, to smile about it. Jesus tells this funny story to encourage us to be watchful, yes; to be ready, yes. But he doesn’t tell it to make us dour and somber. The heavy-hearted tremble, waver, lose sight of their place and purpose, and fall asleep. The lighthearted know that the unexpected will happen—is bound to happen—so they are awake in their place and ready in their purpose when it comes. ESPERAR LO INESPERADO Si alguna vez se te pasó por la mente que a Jesús le faltaba un poco del sentido del humor, el Evangelio de hoy destierra esa noción. La parábola de Jesús sobre las cinco jóvenes precavidas y las cinco jóvenes descuidadas es sumamente chistosa. Las circunstancias de la parábola sin duda resultaban familiares a los que escuchaban a Jesús, como lo son para nosotros. Las bodas nunca, nunca comienzan a la hora. Siempre hay un retraso. Botones que se caen al último minuto. Flores que se marchitan. Vehículos llenos de invitados atasca-dos en el tráfico. For all of us, life is a constant call to go forth: from our mother’s womb, from the house where we are born, from infancy to youth, from youth to adulthood, all the way to our going forth from this world. For ministers of the Gospel too, life is in constant movement, as we go forth from our family home to wherever the Church sends us, from one variety of service to another. We are always on the move, until we make our final journey. If our life is a journey to meet the Bridegroom, it is also the time we have been granted to grow in love. Every day of our lives is a preparation for the wedding banquet, a great period of betrothal. Let us ask ourselves: do I live like someone preparing to meet the Bridegroom? In the ministry, amid all our meetings, activities and paperwork, we must never lose sight of the one thread that holds the entire fabric together: our expectation of the Bridegroom. The center of it all can only be a heart in love with the Lord. Only in this way will the visible body of our ministry be sustained by an invisible soul. Here we begin to realize what the Apostle tells us in the second reading: “We look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal” (2 Cor 4:18). Let us not keep our gaze fixed on earthly affairs, but look beyond them. It is true when they say that the really important things are invisible to our eyes. The really important thing in life is hearing the voice of the Bridegroom. That voice asks us daily to catch sight of the Lord who comes, and to make our every activity a means of preparation for his wedding banquet. We are reminded of this by what the Gospel tells is the one essential thing for the bridesmaids awaiting the wedding banquet. It is not their gowns, or their lamps, but rather the oil kept in small jars.

Para todos, la vida es una llamada con-tinua a salir: del seno materno, de la casa donde nacimos, de la infancia a la juven-tud y de la juventud a la edad adulta, hasta que salgamos de este mundo. También para los ministros del Evangelio la vida es una salida continua: de la casa de nuestra familia hacia donde la Iglesia nos envía, de un servicio a otro; estamos siempre de paso, hasta el paso final. Entonces la vida, si es un camino en salida hacia el esposo, es el tiempo que se nos da para crecer en el amor. Vivir es una cotidiana preparación a las nup-cias, un gran noviazgo. Preguntémonos: ¿Vivo como quien prepara el encuentro con el esposo? En el ministerio, ante to-dos los encuentros, las actividades que se organizan y las prácticas que se tra-mitan, no se debe olvidar el hilo conduc-tor de toda la historia: la espera del espo-so. El centro está en un corazón que ama al Señor. Solo así el cuerpo visible de nuestro ministerio estará sostenido por un alma invisible. Podemos com-prender entonces lo que dice el apóstol Pablo en la segunda Lectura: «No nos fijamos en lo que se ve, sino en lo que no se ve; en efecto, lo que se ve es transito-rio; lo que no se ve es eterno» (2 Co 4,18). No nos quedemos en las diná-micas terrenas, miremos más allá. Es verdad lo que dice la célebre expresión: «Lo esencial es invisible a los ojos». Lo esencial de la vida es escuchar la voz del esposo. Esta nos invita a que vislumbre-mos cada día al Señor que viene y a que transformemos cada actividad en una preparación para las bodas con él. Nos lo recuerda el elemento que en el Evangelio es esencial para las vírgenes que esperan las nupcias: no el vestido, ni tampoco las lámparas, sino el aceite, custodiado en pequeños vasos.

Keeping Christ in Christmas magnets will be available for purchase in the Narthex after Sunday Masses in December. The Knights of council #9903 recently sponsored a blood drive at St Michaels on October 4th, success-fully raising 20 pints of critically needed blood for Carter Blood Drive. Mark your calendar, the next blood drive will be Sunday, January 10th.
