From the Pastor’s Desk….

Last Wednesday, November 1st, we celebrated the Solemnity of All Saints. This feast leads to

the question, "who and how one can become a Saint?" The Gospel (Mt. 5:1-12) gives us the

answer. Very simply, if one wishes to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, one should live the Beati-

tudes: be poor in spirit, be thirsty and hungry for God, be humble, be peacemakers, and be clean

of heart". God, in His mercy, will thus embrace us and reward us with the joy of entering the

Kingdom of Heaven.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes Heaven with these words. "This perfect life with

the Most Holy Trinity, this communion of life and love with the Trinity, with the Virgin Mary,

the angels and all the blessed, is called "heaven." Heaven is the ultimate end and fulfillment of

the deepest human longings, the state of supreme, definitive happiness." (CCC 1024). May we

know God, love Him and serve him in this world, so as to be happy with Him in Heaven.

The Church's commemoration of All Souls' Day has been shaped over the centuries by words

and symbols which help us face with great hope the pain and difficulty of encountering death.

On this day, we commemorate our departed faithful and pray for them. This is an opportunity to

grow in our Christian faith in the Resurrection of Jesus and our own resurrection. Our hope for

the resurrection from the dead of a loved one comes not through their own merits or through our

desires for them, but through the mystery of Christ. He experienced death himself so we all

might have new and eternal life in him who said: "This is the will of my Father, that everyone

who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last

day" (Jn. 6:40). We pray for the souls of our loved ones. May they rest in peace.

The readings of this weekend’s celebrations teach us about “humility”. It is one of the most mis-

understood virtues. It does not involve an attitude of submission or weakness. It is rather an atti-

tude of willingness to accept help. Jesus states, "The greatest among you must be your ser-

vant." (Mt. 23:11) In our fallen world, the humble and the lowly magnify God’s love. The pow-

erful and the self-righteous enrich only themselves. We need to pray to be cleansed of all greed

and selfishness so God’s love can fill us. And in this world so pre-occupied with material wealth

and other attachments, God needs humble, loving instruments through whom His love can flow

freely also to others. "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles him-

self will be exalted." (v. 12).

May God help us to imitate Christ who is meek and humble of heart.

God bless you!

Fr. John Francis

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL CORNER

Director of Faith Formation Sister Alice Michael contact information 718 591-6536

We have all heard of the importance of our children receiv-ing on-going religious education and formation. Our Faith Formation Program is NOT only a sacramental program to prepare for First Holy Communion then stop coming for classes, and finally return for classes for the last two years preparing to receive Confirmation. Just as in our secular education the knowledge and skills of each year build on the prior year, so too this should be the NORM for the faith formation of our children. It is an ongoing learning experi-ence. It is impossible to help our children come to know God and our Catholic faith in two years for Holy Commun-ion and then the final two years for Confirmation. It is an ongoing learning experience.

GOOD NEWS TO SHARE!!!We are so grateful to the parents of 33 of our children who have already received First Holy Communion and are now continuing their faith formation in Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6. We call these children Followers of Jesus. Each student has his/her own copy of the New Testament and are learning how to find passages and how to read and understand the Bible. They also have another religion text book to continue learning their Catholic faith. In these two pictures here with their catechists are these faithful, happy Followers of Jesus. It is not too late to begin. Please call me at 718-591-6536 to register.

Ya hemos oído hablar de la importancia de que nuestros niños

reciban educación y formación religiosa continua. Nuestra For-
