Please pray for the Church in our Diocese

Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of your Son, so that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere.

With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord.

This week we pray especially for: Joseph Richards of Cathedral St. Joseph

in La Crosse, WI Theology I

Mundelein Seminary

Prayer Intention of the Week:

For all who have never heard the Gospel, that they may be reached with this good news of salvation and embrace it with faith

Born at Alexandria, Egypt, between 370 and 380, Cyril lived as a hermit until a patriarch uncle convinced him to return to the religious community. In

412, he became in turn patriarch of Alexandria, in which post he demonstrated unwavering authority, battling heresies, in particular the Nestorian, which brought him into doctrinal conflict with Nestorius, patriarch of Constantinople. Among the leading theologians and exegetes of the East, Cyril, nicknamed “seal of the Fathers,” died in 444.

2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish · Marshfield

As I write this from my parents' farm on Monday, I start

by saying that I like the statement, " the Lord works in

mysterious ways." I began to write this on the subject

of Jesus saying in today's Gospel that you are worth

more than a flock of sparrows. And after I started

writing it, my brother told me he saw that there was a

baby sparrow at the front door of the farmhouse . So I

picked it up to keep it safe from their dog named Thor.

I have always had a soft spot for birds. In fact, I have

been doing some light reading on that subject. In this

age of immediate communication with the Internet, I

have learned that for thousands of years – – up until

just 70 years ago – – people made use of what they

knew as the most effective and immediate means of

communication available. Hannibal used this

communication as did many long before him. In the

early 1800s, the Rothschild family used this method of

communication to become the most wealthy family in

Europe through their banking. In both World War I and

World War II, it was considered the most reliable

means of relaying important information. Hot air

balloons, soldiers, and special houses were dedicated

all around Europe to accommodate these important

messengers. In World War II, these messengers were

equipped with automatic cameras for surveillance

photography. It is almost hard to believe that these

revered messengers were....pigeons!

I have mentioned that since my childhood I have

always loved pigeons. The tame pigeon that I now

have, Cheryl, is trained to fly behind me when I ride my

motorcycle. There have been majestic buildings

constructed in Europe for almost a thousand years to

house pigeons, and Great Britain has at least one

Wartime memorial dedicated to the service that

pigeons provided. So when you feel yourself assailed

like Jeremiah in today's first reading, and as I consider

how my beloved pigeons were relied upon for several

thousand years of communication, I have a different

perspective of the words of our Lord that you are worth

more than a flock of sparrows … We are priceless in

his eyes.

Yours in Jesus , Fr. Berns

Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse, or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting, to the Lord, our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist.

Sacraments Baptism - Parents requesting to have a child baptized are invited to call Father Berns directly at 715-384-9414. He will assist with any baptism preparation and scheduling a date.

Reconciliation - Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:45-5:15 pm and upon request. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent.

First Eucharist and Confirmation- Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Therefore, any child must be enrolled continually from the First Grade, in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP’s Religious Education Programs, to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation.

RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults- Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at 715-384-3044. Classes begin each Fall.

Marriage- Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding.

Anointing of the Sick- If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at 715-384-9414. A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year.

New Parishioners- To join our community, please register at the Parish Office, the church welcome desk, or call 715-384-9414 Ext. 2.

Bulletin announcement requests are due in writing or via email([email protected]) and must be received in the Parish Office by 12:00pm on the preceding Monday.
