Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor Just imagine if the following story was true. The cruise ship orchestra’s drummer began a sustained drum roll as “Marvo, the World’s Greatest Magician” solemnly de-clared: “I will now make Pietro the Parrot disappear right before your eyes.” The drum roll gets louder as the audi-ence members for the evening show simultaneously hold their breath. Marvo dramatically approaches his parrot as it sits on its perch. With wide gestures, he picked up Pietro with both hands and slowly lowered the bird into a double-bottomed canister. When he put the lid on the can-ister the drum roll stopped. At that moment, there was a tremendous explosion and, much to the fright of the audi-ence, the ship immediately sank. Floating now in the now lidless canister, Pietro spotted Marvo who was clinging to some of the boat’s debris. The parrot called across the water: “Good going, Marvo, but how did you make the ship disappear?” As we imagine the transfiguration of our Lord, we might wonder why Peter, upon witnessing this amazing spectacle, didn’t ask Jesus, “How did you do that?” In-stead Peter only declares, “It was good to be here,” offer-ing to erect tents for everyone. Jesus first prayed, then the “magic” happened: in the Transfiguration, we see the an-swer to our prayers. In Scripture, astonishing things happen on mountains. When the Bible tells us that someone is going “up a mountain,” it’s time to fasten your seat belt. Right away you know something completely out of the ordinary, something special and sacred is about to take place. And that’s just what happens in today’s Gospel reading. Until this mountaintop moment in the Gospels of Mat-thew, Mark and Luke, Jesus is presented as someone who is exceptional, even remarkable. But, he is also seen as human - a man who amazed people with his miracles and his teachings, but was still in many ways just like you and me. But then, out of nowhere, we are told that when Jesus reaches the top of the mountain with Peter, John and James, “his face shone like the sun and his clothes be-came white as light.” And we know now that we have left the humdrum ordinary and entered an experience that can only be described as transcendent. We have entered the realm of the holy. On the mountaintop, we are introduced to two of the most eminent of all Hebrew Scripture heroes: Moses and Elijah. Until this experience, Jesus’ disciples treated him as an equal of these great prophets of the ages. But, then a cloud came over the disciples and a “voice” from the cloud says: “This is my beloved Son ... listen to him.” What the disciples - and you and I - are being clearly told is that Jesus is more than a prophet, more than a wonder worker, more than any other holy person who ever exist-ed - more than Moses and Elijah. Wow! That is incredi-ble. I would like to keep encouraging our entire communi-ty to be bearers of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Don’t be afraid to speak about our faith with others when it is appropriate - that being the right time and the right place. When someone seems interested in knowing more, and especially if they are not Catholic, direct them to speak to our RCIA Coordinator, Jazmir Fajardo, by calling the parish office. The RCIA program will be beginning soon. This is a good time for people to “come and see” and be marveled by the good things that Jesus will reveal to them. Help spread the word! Father Michael Rocha

Padre Michael Rocha

Stewardship

Online Giving Through Faith Direct In addition to saving paper (and trees!) here are some other benefits to setting up automatic offertory giving online: • Intentionally - By having your weekly or monthly

offering taken out of your account on a recurring ba-sis, you are giving your “first fruits” to God, Online giving is a tool that will help you make giving a pri-ority by scheduling your donations

• Simplicity - You won’t have to worry about whether

or not you remembered to turn in your check. When you go out of town or miss a mass for any reason, your gift to St. Paschal will continue automatically.

• Security - Giving online is even more secure than

using checks, because electronic gifts cannot be lost or stolen.

• No Distractions - On Sunday morning you can come

ready to worship without all the distractions of writ-ing a check because you know your gift is already taken care of.

• Easy Tracking - On line giving is easier to track for

our administrative staff and requires less processing since information is automatically logged and depos-ited. You can more accurately track your records es-pecially for tax season.

Giving online is an easy and convenient way to support St. Paschal. Simply visit www. Faithdirect.net (St. Pas-chal’s Church Code is CA592) to set up your weekly or monthly gift. You personally select either the 1st or 15th of the month for your offering. You receive a confirma-tion email for each transaction. For assistance with this, please contact JoAnn at the Parish Center.

Back to school safety tips There is a lot that goes into preparing for the new school year, and it’s important to remember to talk about safety. These are a few tips to consider: (1) meet all of your child’s teachers, (2) discuss school bathroom behavior (no one should go into a stall with a child for any reason), (3) occasionally walk your chil-dren to their class instead of using the carpool line. Update on Capital Improvements at St. Paschal’s Parishioners keep asking when? Here is your answer. The painting of the Parish Hall, inside and out, is scheduled as separate projects (due to the availability of the painting company). The inside of the hall, conference rooms and bathrooms will begin on August 14th. The painting of the outside of the Hall will begin on August 31st. It will take a couple of weeks to complete this entire project. The parking lot resurfacing, re-striping and repair is a more complicated project. First, any project over $20,000 must be approved by the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese vettes and approves the proposed companies and oversees the project - approval is going to be given shortly. Second, the project is actually costing at least $21,000 more than anticipated (we have the funds to cover the costs). Both companies bidding the project are in agreement that there is a lot of repair needed on the parking lot. They are also in agreement that in order to maintain a parking lot so that it last longer a resealing should occur every 2 to 3 years. The last time our parking lot was sealed and striped was nearly 15 years ago. The repair means that large sections need to be removed and re-paved and then the entire lot will be slurried and striped. The repairs will happen a few days before the slurry. The slurry and striping will be completed in three days. The Archdiocese takes its time to fully investigate each bidding company that is unknown to them. This is beyond my control so please be patient (we seem to have several impatient parishioners who keep calling and emailing with “concerns”). All will be completed soon. Fr. Michael

EYEWITNESSES Today, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clev-er myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew’s Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until “the Son of Man has been raised from the dead” (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased,” and he assures us that the message is “altogether relia-ble” (2 Peter 1:17, 19). Second Reading — Be attentive to the prophetic mes-sage, as to a lamp shining in a dark place (2 Peter 1:16-19). Gospel — Jesus was transfigured, and his clothes be-came white as light (Matthew 17:1-9). As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construction. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and inva-sions swept through. Not much of Rome’s former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the cha-os, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city’s only glory. The Romans wanted “good order” not only in their civic life, but in their liturgy. One prayer, increasingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instru-ments entirely) was the new rule of the day. That one prayer, the Roman Canon, was solidly in place when the first liturgical book we have, the Leonine Sacramentary of 540, was compiled. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
