Christ The King
(Last Sunday of the Liturgical Year )
It is one of the most important feasts of the liturgical calendar, because we celebrate that Christ is the King of the universe. His Kingdom is the Kingdom of truth and life, of holiness and grace, of justice, of love and
peace.
A bit of history. The feast of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI on March 11, 1925.
The Pope wanted to motivate Catholics to recognize in pub-lic that the president of the Church is Christ the King.
Later the date of the celebration moved giving a new sense to him. At the close of the liturgical year with this feast, we wanted to emphasize the importance of Christ as the center of all of universal history. It is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. Christ reigns in people with his mes-sage of love, justice and service. The Kingdom of Christ is eternal and universal, that is, forever and for all men.
The feast of Christ the King concludes the liturgical year. This feast has an eschatological sense because we celebrate Christ as King of the whole universe. We know that the Kingdom of Christ has already begun, since it became pre-sent on earth from its coming into the world almost two thou-sand years ago, but Christ will not definitively reign over all men until he returns to the world with all his glory at the end of the times, in the Parousia. Cristo Rey
