The Introductory RitesThe Prayers at the Foot of the Altar are omitted on Sundays. There’s an Entrance hymn.

Who are these like stars appearing, these, before God’s throne who stand?each a golden crown is wearing:who are all this glorious band?Alleluia, hark, they sing, praising loud their heavenly King.

Who are these of dazzling brightness, these in God’s own truth arrayed, clad in robes of purest whitenessrobes whose lustre ne’er shall fade,ne’er be touched by time’s rude hand—whence came all this glorious band?

These are they who have contendedfor their Saviour’s honour long, wrestling on till life was ended, following not the sinful throng;these, who well the fight sustained, triumph through the Lamb have gained.

These are they whose hearts were riven, sore with woe and anguish tried, who in prayer full oft have strivenwith the God they glorified;now their painful conflict o’er,God has bid them weep no more.

These like priests have watched and waited, offering up to Christ their will, soul and body consecratedday and night to serve him still:now in God’s most holy placeblest they stand before his face.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Now I know of a surety that the Lord hath sent his Angel: and hath delivered me from the hand of Herod, and from all expectation of the people of the Jews.

Collect

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

The priest prays the Collect, the Prayer of the Day.

O God, who hast hallowed this day by the martyrdom of thine Apostles Peter and Paul: grant unto thy Church, in all things, to follow the precepts of those through whom she received the beginning of religion; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

The Liturgy of the WordSit for the readings

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 12:1–11

In those days, Herod the king laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the Church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword; and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the Church.

The very night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison; and behold, an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your mantle around you and follow me.” And he went out and followed him; he did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened to them of its own accord, and they went out and passed on

through one street; and immediately the angel left him.

And Peter came to himself, and said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual: In omnem terram, Ps 19:4, 1

Their sound is gone out into all lands: and their words unto the ends of the world.

The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament showeth his handy-work.

Second Reading

A reading from the second Letter of St Paul to Timothy 4:6–8, 17–18

Beloved: I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the message fully, that all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Alleluia Tu es Petrus, Mt 16:18

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Thou art Peter, and upon this rock : I will build my Church.

Alleluia.

The Gospel

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. 16:13–19

Glory be to thee, O Lord.

At that time: When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise be to thee, O Christ.

A homily follows.

The Creed

All stand to say the Nicene Creed.

I believe in one God,the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,begotten of his Father before all worlds,God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father;by whom all things were made;who for us men and for our salvationcame down from heaven,

Genuflect

and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary,

and was made man;

Stand

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered and was buried;and the third day he rose again

according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father;and he shall come again with glory,to judge both the quick and the dead;whose kingdom shall have no end.And I believe in the Holy Ghost

the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son;who with the Father and the Son together

is worshipped and glorified;who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic

and Apostolic Church;I acknowledge one Baptism

for the remission of sins;and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People

Kneel for the Prayers of the People

Lord, in thy mercy: hear our prayer.

Penitential Rite

Ye that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail

our manifold sins and wickedness,

Page 5: Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Apostles · 6/28/2020  · perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Introit: Nunc scio, Acts 12–11; Ps

which we from time to time most grievously have committed,

by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty,

provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us.

We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry

for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them

is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The priest pronounces God’s merciful forgiveness.

May Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

The Offertory

The offertory antiphon is said and the altar and offerings are prepared.

Constitues eos principes, Ps 45:16–17

Thou shalt make them princes in all lands: they shall remember thy Name, O Lord, from one generation to another.

Stand

Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Almighty Father.

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

The prayer over the offerings is said.

Consecrate, O Lord, the oblations which we offer unto thee; and with them accept on our behalf the prayers of thy blessed Apostles; and thereby cleanse us from all sin and defend us from all adversaries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you.And with thy spirit.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord.

Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty …... evermore praising thee and saying,

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dóminus Deus Sábaoth. Pleni sunt cæli et terra glória tua. Osánna in excélsis.

Benedíctus qui venit in nómine Dómini. Osanna in excélsis.

All kneel while the priest continues with the Eucharistic prayer

The mystery of faith:

We proclaim thy Death, O Lord, and profess thy Resurrection until thou come again.

... By whom and with whom and in whom, to thee, O Father Almighty, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

The Communion Rite

As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespassesas we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Page 6: Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Apostles · 6/28/2020  · perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Introit: Nunc scio, Acts 12–11; Ps

Deliver us, O Lord, we beseech thee ...we may ever both be free from sin and safe from all distress.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace

O Lord Jesus Christ, who saidst to thine Apostles, ... world without end. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.And with thy spirit.

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccáta mundi: miserére nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccáta mundi: miserére nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccáta mundi: dona nobis pacem.

All pray the Prayer of Humble Access

We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy

so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table.

But thou art the same Lordwhose property is always to have mercy.Grant us therefore, gracious Lord,so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christand to drink his Blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean

by his Bodyand our souls washed

through his most precious Blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him that taketh away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.

The Communion

The priest receives communion.

The communion antiphon is said. Tu es Petrus, Ps 13:6

Thou art Peter, and upon this rock : I will build my Church.

We make an Act of Spiritual Communion.

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art present in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love Thee above all things and I desire Thee in my soul.

Since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. As though Thou wert already there,

I embrace Thee and unite myself wholly to Thee;

permit not that I should ever be separated from Thee. Amen.

After communion

Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee

for that thou dost feed us,in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food

of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ;

and dost assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us;

and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son,

the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom,

Page 7: Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Apostles · 6/28/2020  · perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Introit: Nunc scio, Acts 12–11; Ps

by the merits of the most precious death and Passion of thy dear Son.

And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father,

so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works

as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

The Priest prays the post-communion prayer

O Lord, who hast here vouchsafed unto us to be partakers of thy bounty: grant, we beseech thee; that we may so continue to draw near unto the same, that, growing more and more in grace, we may attain in the end to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Concluding RiteThe priest says the blessing.

The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.

Go forth in peace. Thanks be to God.

Act of Dedication of England to St Peter

O Blessed Prince of Apostles, Vicar of Christ and Shepherd of all his flock, foundation whereon his Church is built, we give thanks to him, our Chief Shepherd, who in the ages of faith bound this country so lovingly and so strongly to thee, and to that holy See of Rome from which its conversion came. We praise and bless our Lord for those steadfast Confessors who laid down their lives for thy honour and prerogative, in the hour when schism and heresy broke upon the land. We desire to revive that love and devotion of ancient days. We consecrate our country, as far as in us lies,

fervently and lovingly to thee. We offer thee our homage. We renew our loyalty to the Pontiff, thy successor, who now fills the Apostolic See. Do thou confirm and strengthen, by thy powerful intercession, the faith of the Pastors and people who invoke thee. Save us from apostasy, from disunion, from religious indifference, and from the losses to which ignorance and temptation expose our little flock. Most sincere and most humble penitent, obtain for us tears of true repentance for our sins, and a strong personal love for our Divine Master; Keybearer of the heavenly kingdom, open its gates to us, that we may enter into the joy of the King of Glory. Remember this realm of England, which grew in grace and unity under thy blessed apostolic influence for nearly a thousand years. Pray to Jesus that all may see the light and be brought back to thy fold, which is the one fold of Christ. Amen.

Thou art Peter. And upon this rock I will build My Church.

Let us pray.

Raise us up, we beseech thee, O Lord, by the apostolic might of thy blessed apostle, Peter: and the weaker we are in ourselves, the more powerful may be the aid whereby we are strengthened through his intercession; that fortified thus by the protection of thy apostle, we may never yield to sin nor be overwhelmed by adversity. Who livest and reignest for ever. Amen.

Clergy continue to be available for the sick and dying, whatever the circumstances. Please do not hesitate to call them if you or someone you know needs the sacraments.

Churches are open for private prayer in the presence of the Most Holy Sacrament. Christ the King, St Joachim and OLR all have periods during the week: see our website.

When you visit, please observe the conditions which need to be in place. Please ask the clergy about sacramental confession or other pastoral meetings.

Public masses can resume from July, under similar conditions to those for private prayer. We plan to celebrate mass at St Agnes at pm next Sunday, July. Social distancing means there will be a maximum for the number of people able to attend. Watch the website and Facebook for details of what’s possible: we will need volunteers to help with cleaning the church after mass. A new plan for streaming mass on Sundays and during the week is being prepared.

Please continue to pray for a return to the Church; the continued reduction in infection; those who are sick and those who care for them; those who have suffered mentally and economically; those who have died.

The Dedication of England to St Peter is taken from the Manual of Prayers, Authorized by the Hierarchy of England and Wales for Congregational Use, 1953.
