OUR MISSION STATEMENT
SS. Peter & Paul Parish, a community of faith called by God to deepen
our relationship with Jesus Christ, serves the Lord by sharing our time,
talent and treasure. As disciples of Christ, we are called to bring Jesus
Christ to ourselves and others: our children, the sick, the poor, the fallen
away Catholics and those who need to hear God’s message of uncondi-
tional love and forgiveness. SS. Peter & Paul Parish is a beacon of light
rooted in Jesus Christ, passed on to his successor, our Holy Father the
Pope, and is guided by our local bishop to build the Kingdom of God on
Earth. It is our mission to shine the light of Jesus Christ in our world and
to spiritually enrich the individual members of the parish as well as the
larger community through word, worship, sacrament and service.

Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) PART THREE SECTION ONE CHAPTER ONE ARTICLE 7 THE VIRTUES
1803 "Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatev-
er is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts,
but to give the best of himself. The virtuous person tends toward the good with all his sensory and spiritual
powers; he pursues the good and chooses it in concrete actions.
The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God.
I. THE HUMAN VIRTUES
1804 Human virtues are firm attitudes, stable dispositions, habitual perfections of intellect and will that govern our actions, order our passions, and guide our conduct according to reason and faith. They make
possible ease, self-mastery, and joy in leading a morally good life. The virtuous man is he who freely practices
the good. The moral virtues are acquired by human effort. They are the fruit and seed of morally good acts;
they dispose all the powers of the human being for communion with divine love.
The Cardinal Virtues 1805 Four virtues play a pivotal role and accordingly are called "cardinal;" all the others are grouped around
them. They are: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. "If anyone loves righteousness, [Wisdom's] la-
bors are virtues; for she teaches temperance and prudence, justice, and courage." These virtues are praised un-
der other names in many passages of Scripture.
1806 Prudence is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and
to choose the right means of achieving it; "the prudent man looks where he is going." "Keep sane and sober
for your prayers." Prudence is "right reason in action," writes St. Thomas Aquinas, following Aristotle. It is
not to be confused with timidity or fear, nor with duplicity or dissimilation. It is called auriga virtutum (the
charioteer of the virtues); it guides the other virtues by setting rule and measure. It is prudence that immediate-
ly guides the judgment of conscience. The prudent man determines and directs his conduct in accordance with
this judgment. With the help of this virtue we apply moral principles to particular cases without error and
overcome doubts about the good to achieve and the evil to avoid.
Let us pray for the Virtue of Prudence in our lives.
Fr. Ed needs your help to plan Christmas Mass Schedule. Clip and return – thank you!
This year, December 25, 2017, Christmas Day is on a Monday. Our usual Christmas schedule is to
have Masses on Christmas Eve at 4 pm, 6 pm and 10 pm, and then on Christmas Day at 10 am.
If we use this same schedule this year, it would mean that the majority of parishioners would need to
attend Mass twice on Sunday (Sunday morning liturgy, then Christmas Eve Mass in the afternoon/evening.
An alternative proposal has been made to schedule Masses on Sunday, Christmas Eve, at 4 and 10 pm,
and Christmas Day Masses at 9 am and 11 am.
What would be best for everyone? Please note your preference below, clip this out and place it in the
collection basket next week, or call the office ASAP — 570-265-2113.
_______Stay the same: Sunday, Christmas Eve at 4 pm, 6 pm, and 10 pm; and Christmas Day at 10 am
______Change to: Sunday, Christmas Eve at 4 pm and 10 pm; and Christmas Day at 9 am and 11 am
______Or Other Suggestions: _____________________________________________________________

Diocesan Annual Appeal - In-Pew Commitment This Weekend, October 14-15
This weekend is the In-Pew Commitment to the 2017 Diocesan Annual Appeal. As you have already
seen in the Bishop’s DVD presentation here on September 9, from periodic information in our Bulletin, and in
the Catholic Light, there are many, many people who are assisted because of your generosity.
From a personal perspective, the Diocesan Annual Appeal supported my seminary education; it has
supported Hezekiah’ s hands and Grace Connection (through a grant to our parish) for at least the past four (4)
years, and has supported numerous training programs for SSPP parishioners. Please make a generous gift
commitment to the Annual Appeal this weekend.
Looking Ahead - Parish Retreat – September 16-18, 2018
Saints Peter & Paul Parish has engaged Frank Runyeon to present a three day retreat here in Towanda
for September 16-18, 2018. Mark your Calendars for this special opportunity.
For twenty (20) years, Frank has been helping audiences of all ages:
to rediscover the power of the central stories of Scripture, and
to laugh (good-naturedly) at the way the media portray the world.
Frank Runyeon starred opposite Meg Ryan on CBS, and in more than 1,000 TV episodes and movies, before
leaving Hollywood to attend seminary. He was nominated for a Daytime Emmy award for a guest appearance
last year on CBS. He studied at: Princeton (B.A.), General Theological Seminary (M.A., with honors), Fuller
Seminary, and Yale Divinity. Mark your calendars now – save the dates.
World Mission Sunday - Next Weekend, October 21-22
World Mission Sunday will be observed in every land and nation next weekend, October 21-22, 2017.
Following the example of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, we are called upon this weekend in particular to
keep the poor and those most in need close to our hearts.
Like Pope Francis, we are asked to be especially mindful of our obligation to build the Church and
serve the poor to the very ends of the earth. It is what the Church exists to do.
The Society for the Propagation of the Faith is the Holy Father’s chief outreach to more than 1,150
missionary dioceses across the globe that depend on the financial help and the prayers of all of us. These
mission churches provide a spiritual home for the poorest and most vulnerable, sanctifying them with the
Sacraments through which they come to experience the Lord’s presence and peace.
Through the generous support of the good work of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith by so
many of our faithful people, World Mission Sunday enables us to join our lives with the loving work of mis-
sionaries of every time and every place. As Pope Francis writes in his message for World Mission Sunday,
parishes are most fully alive when “grounded in love for Jesus and concern for the needs of others.”
Special envelopes are in the rear of the church; For contribution credit, mark your name/envelope
number on the envelope, or designate “Missions” on your loose check.
Commemoration of Martin Luther Posting - Sunday, October 29, 2017
The local Lutheran Community has invited us to recognize our common beliefs and to participate in the
commemoration of Martin Luther’s posting of his Articles for Discussion.
This past Spring, Catholics and Lutherans came together to celebrate our common understandings and
beliefs of faith to help us to move forward in unity. They are planning a common service on Sunday, October
29, 2017 at the Lutheran church here in Towanda. More details to follow – if you are interested in attending,
please contact Fr. Ed 570-265-2113.
