June 10 & 11 Letter Campaign: Bread for the World

Write a Letter to End Hunger

Bread for the World – Have Faith, End Hunger Over forty years ago, the Rev. Arthur Simon became a Lutheran pastor in the Lower East Side of New York City. There he encountered the poverty of people in his neighborhood, particularly that of the elderly and single moth-ers. Having been involved in the civil rights movement, he witnessed the poverty in the deep South, even encountering a two-year-old with rickets. An ecumenical coalition was founded in New York, including Fr. Bill Byron, S.J., and the Rev. John Neuhaus, to address hunger issues not on a parish level but on a state and national level. Bread for the World was born.

“Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.” Beginning with hun-ger in the U.S., the ecumenical board of BFW soon recognized the place that the U.S. could play in coordination with other nations and with non-governmental organizations, like Catholic Charities, the UNHCR and Oxfam, to end world hunger. Over the decades BFW has successfully lobbied mem-bers of Congress to support programs to reduce hunger throughout the world. “Global hunger has continued to decline in the world, albeit gradual-

On June 3rd and 4th, you will be able to visit with several parish ministries of service. Enjoy the fel-

lowship and time to find your calling. No matter what way you choose to be a good steward of God’s gifts, we want

to support you. Come to Benedict Hall second floor to see all the opportunities to use your time and talent!

Pentecost weekend, June 3 and 4 after every Mass in Benedict Hall 2nd Floor.

Stewardship of Time & Talent Fair

Thank you to the 170 parishioners who served the most vulnerable in our community on May 13, 2017. Together we met and served people from 13 different organizations.

Our goal this year is to spend more time accompanying those we serve. By being present to each person we meet, our hearts open to her or his unique stories and experiences. Christ asks us to love our neighbor. In being with our neighbors who are so often forgotten and underprivileged, we come to know, see and love Christ in ways beyond our daily lives. If you would like to help organize a Fall Day of Service this year, please send a note to [email protected] with your ideas and contact information..

One day, many caring hearts, a million points of light.

Living Our Faith: Day of Service

R EGISTRATION FOR FAITH FORMATION —

St. Peter Faith Formation registration for 2017-2018 is now open. Registration forms are

available on our website www.stpeterscatholic.org under the Education and the Children’s

Education pages. Registration for some of our programs fill quickly so please turn in forms

as soon as possible. Deadline for registration is August 6. Completed forms can be

emailed, mailed, placed in offertory, or dropped off at the office. Payment can be made

online at our website under Giving tab, or cash or check.

Preparation for First Reconciliation takes place in the fall and

First Communion in the spring. The Diocese requires students

to have two years of

catechesis prior to receiving a sacrament. At St. Peter we

interpret this to mean one year of religious education prior to

the sacramental year and religious education during the sacra-

mental year. In addition, all students must enroll in the parish

sacramental program, whether enrolled in public, private, or

parochial schools. Our preparation program includes a parent

meeting at the beginning of the year and six retreats. Dates for

the sacraments are on the 2017-2018 Faith Formation Calendar.

Contact the Faith Formation office Cathy Chiappetta

[email protected] if you have any questions.

ly, to an estimated 795 million undernourished people, or a reduction of 167 million hungry people over the last ten years.” Unfortunately, war, civil unrest and refugees often increase the number of the hungry in places that had seen progress. Each year, BFW encourages Christians to make one or more Offering of Letters to their Congresspersons to sup-

port programs that end hunger and to go to Washington on an annual Lobby Day (This year on June 13th.) to make

their views known personally. As a member of BFW for over twenty-five years, I have seen the good that BFW does

and have formed a group here at St. Peter’s to encourage us to join in this year’s Offering of Letters on the weekend

of June 10-11. As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 25, “I was hungry and you gave me food.” More details will follow in

next week’s bulletin and on-line. — Fr. John

Ministry invitation: Extraordinary Ministry of Holy Communion!

“The Eucharist constitutes the very life of the Church, for the Lord said; I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me shall ever be hungry; no one who believes in me shall ever thirst.”

In celebration of the Eucharist there should always be sufficient Ministers and Auxiliary Ministers to assist in the distribution of communion to our parishioners. Your willingness to commit to a sixteen week schedule and to prepare properly, there will be a training session in May.

You may sign up online at http://bit.ly/stpeterLM to start your training also please indicate the mass times you are available. (We can make changes at a later time.) Please join us by assisting in the distribution of Holy Eucharist! Please contact Chris Churchill for further information at 704.607.9351 or email him at [email protected]

Stewardship Spotlight on….. Druid Hills Partnership

Be a Proctor at Druid Hills— The Students Need You During Testing Week! End of Grade Testing will be approaching soon and Druid Hills Academy is recruiting proctors.

Proctors are needed from June 5th through June 16th, especially for the 5th - 9th. Proctors must be at the school ready to assist with testing from 8:00 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m. You may volunteer for one day or multiple days.

Proctors support test administrators during testing, supervise hallways, supervise/monitor small group of students and es-cort students to designated areas.

If you are interested in proctoring for end of grade testing at Druid Hills Academy, please email Carmela Head, family advo-cate, at [email protected]

There will be two proctor training sessions: Tuesday, May 23rd at 9:00 AM Tuesday, May 30th at 5:00 PM

Note: If you are unable to make one of these sessions, you may take the training the morning of the first day you plan to proctor. Proctors must receive training each year. Thank you! Your help is greatly appreciated!

A s we look toward the celebration of Pentecost the weekend of June 3 and 4,

we take some time to prayerfully reflect on the many ways God has gifted us.

The outpouring of the Holy Spirit resulted in the first Disciples of Jesus going forth and

proclaiming the Good News. We are called to do the same today. We use our unique gifts

of time and talent in many ways. Some are called as liturgical ministers. Others to Social

Justice and outreach. Still others to Parish life or Formational ministries.

Come and explore the opportunities offered in our community to serve others as good

stewards of our time and talent. Our Stewardship of Time and Talent Fair will be held after

all the Masses on Pentecost Weekend, June 3-4 in Benedict Hall on the 2nd floor. Come

and see how you can use your God-given gifts. Talk to those involved in our service minis-

tries. Meet some of your fellow parishioners. Explore the possibilities!

News Update on our “adopted” school— Druid Hills Academy will remain preK-8 in the new CMS assignment plan. To reduce over-crowding at the school, students in portions of its district will be reassigned to other area schools, if adopted by the school board May 24. Druid Hills may be able to become a partial magnet for technology (STEM), especially since it is located near Charlotte’s future “technology corridor” along Graham Street. St Peter volun-teers will continue to serve the school through tutoring, staff & teacher support and student career development.
