PENTECOST SUNDAY DOMINGO DE PENTECOSTÉS

POPE FRANCIS ON THE MASS The Liturgy of the Word (part 2)

The meal of the Liturgy is a lavish one which draws largely from the treasures of the Bible (cf. SC, 51), both the Old and the New Testaments, because in them, the Church proclaims

the one and the same mystery of Christ (cf. Lectionary, Introduction, 5). Let us think about the richness of the Bible readings offered by the three Sunday cycles, which in the light of the

Synoptic Gospels, accompany us throughout the Liturgical Year: a great richness. Here I wish to also recall the importance of the Responsorial Psalm whose function is to foster meditation

on what was heard in the reading that precedes it. It is preferable that the Psalm be enriched by song, at least in the response (cf. GIRM, 61; Lectionary, Introduction, 19-22).

The Liturgical proclamation of the very same readings with the songs derived from Sacred Scripture expresses and fosters ecclesial communion by accompanying the journey of each and every one. It is the Lord who is speaking to us.

Substituting that Word with other things impoverishes and compromises the dialogue between God and his people in prayer. On the contrary, the dignity of the pulpit and the use of the Lectionary, the availability of good readers and

psalmists [are required]. But we must look for good readers! Those who know how to read, not those who read [distorting the words] and nothing is understood. This is how it is. Good readers. They must be prepared and rehearse

before the Mass in order to read well. And this creates a climate of receptive silence. We know that the Word of the Lord is of indispensable help so as not to get lost, as is clearly recognized by the

Psalmist who, speaking to the Lord, confesses: “Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps 119[118]:105). How can we face our earthly pilgrimage with its difficulties and its trials without being regularly nourished

and enlightened by the Word of God which resounds in the Liturgy? Of course it is not enough to listen with our ears without welcoming into our heart the seed of the Divine Word,

allowing it to bear fruit. Let us remember the Parable of the Sower and of the results achieved by the different types of soil (cf. Mk 4:14-20). The action of the Holy Spirit which renders the response effective needs hearts that allow them-

selves to be fashioned and cultivated in such a way that what is heard at Mass passes into daily life, according to the admonishment of the Apostle James: “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves”

(Jas 1:22). The Word of God makes a pathway within us. We listen to it with our ears and it passes to our hearts; it does not re-

main in our ears; it must go to the heart. And from the heart, it passes to the hands, to good deeds. This is the path which the Word of God follows: from our ears to our heart and hands.

Let us learn these things. Thank you!

Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

In a decree dated February 11, 2018, Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect for the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments announced that “Pope Francis has decreed that the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, should be inscribed in the Roman calendar on the Monday after Pentecost and be celebrated every year”

Therefore, in the Latin-rite Church, the celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church - as an obligatory memorial - will have precedence over any other memorial of a saint or blessed on the Monday following Pentecost.

For more information regarding this new feast, there are pamphlets in the kiosk in the vestibule.

WORDS TO INSPIRE

“The wind and fire of the Holy Spirit must continually break down those barriers that we continue to build between us; we must continually pass from Babel to Pentecost.”

--Pope Benedict XVI

LIVE THE LITURGY

"Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth!" We only know that the wind exists because of what it does. A gentle breeze felt on our face or watching a tree swaying or swirling snowflakes all prove the existence of "something" causing these things to happen. But, apart from its effects, we cannot see the origin or substance of wind. The Holy Spirit is the wind of God. Watching an early Church emerge, people coming to believe, disciples of Je-sus change the way they live and conduct their affairs-all give witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Observing the courage and conviction of those who have found faith, working for justice, feeding the poor, seeing how wounds are healed-all point to something greater than ourselves working and living among us. How do our lives give witness to the Spirit?

Bishop’s Annual Appeal

This weekend we make our pledges to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. As Christian stewards we recognize God as the source of everything we are and have. We are grateful for our blessings and seek ways to give back, to return some of

these gifts to show our love for the Lord and one anoth-er. As disciples of Jesus Christ, all of us share in the mis-sion of the Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo. Only when we work together can we accomplish God’s work. Please prayerfully consider a very generous gift to this year’s appeal. Our parish goals are 100% and $62,686. With your gift we can achieve them. Consider increasing your last year’s gift by a percentage or a specific dollar amount in order to meet increased needs in out diocese and beyond.

Remember, no gift is too small or too large and every gift makes the work of Jesus Christ possible.
