Thank you for your support. Father Mecca

Yesterday we did our first make-up. We

celebrated a Mass at 10 a.m. with the Rite

of Christian Initiation for the five individu-

als who were to be initiated at the Easter

Vigil and four others who were scheduled for Confirmation

at Pentecost. We baptized Amanda Bergen and Quan Ho

into the Faith, welcomed Danielle Fore, Sara Goncalves,

and Susan Wolf, who were baptized into other Christian

traditions, into the Catholic Church; and completed the

Sacraments for Sergio Jimenez-Molta, Raissa Lobo, Linda

Brham, and Samantha Valdivieso, Catholics who were lack-

ing Confirmation. The cancellation of everything threw off

the process. Regrettably, these nine who prepared them-

selves since September were not able to experience the

power of the Sacraments of Initiation within the context of

the Easter and Pentecost liturgies. Initially, the RCIA team

and I preferred to conduct the rites at a Sunday Mass with

people of the parish present. The great advantage of a Sun-

day Mass is how it provides the candidates with a strong

sense of entering a community of faith. But with only 100

people allowed in the church, we were concerned that the

candidates would not be able to invite everybody that they

wanted to. And so, we went to a Mass outside of the sched-

ule when we wouldn’t have to be concerned with limiting

guests. Ironically, so far to date we are barely reaching 50

people at any weekend Mass and there is plenty of room.

Oh, well. We don’t have a crystal ball. We congratulate

and warmly embrace Amanda, Quan, Danielle, Sara, Sue,

Sergio, Raissa, Linda, and Samantha. Welcome!

Monday is the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.

As I have written on other occasions, there are two feasts in

St. Peter’s honor—The Chair of Peter on February 22—and

this feast which this great saint and our patron shares with

the other pillar of the Church, Saint Paul. You know that

when our ancestors here built the church they included St.

Paul to Peter’s left in the windows above the altar. (To his

right is St. John the Evangelist) As far as I know, we do not

know which feast of Peter our predecessors chose for our

patronal feast day. I wonder if they had in mind June 29

since they chose St. Paul to include in the apse windows.

Maybe they just were discouraged by a winter day? Win-

ters were tougher in the 19th century, afterall. In any case,

we have gone with tomorrow. May our heavenly patron

chosen by Jesus to be the first among the Apostles and to be

the rock upon which He would build His Church, intercede

for us, helping us in our needs. Happy feast day to us!

Glorious St. Peter, obtain for us the grace of lively

faith that shall not fear to profess itself openly, fully, and in

all its manifestations. May we sacrifice life itself rather

than deny our faith. Grant that we may ever keep sincerely

and closely united to the Holy Father who is the heir of

your authority, and the true, visible head of the Catholic

Church. May we be obedient to all her precepts so as to

enjoy peace here on earth and to attain one day eternal

happiness in heaven. (adapted from Terrence Cardinal

Music Notes: The Propers

Although hymns have always been an important part of the Liturgy of the Hours, their place in the celebration of Mass is a relatively recent phenomenon. Indeed, what some refer to as the four-hymn sandwich (entrance, offertory, com-munion and recessional hymns) was only popularized after the Second Vatican Council. Before Vatican II, the choir or cantor would have sung the entrance or offertory “proper,” which was a brief chant (called an antiphon), followed by psalm verses, all chanted in Latin! In recent years, more and more churches have gained a renewed appreciation of chanted propers, and several composers have composed chant to accompany the propers in English. Some music directors, in fact, have begun to discourage hymns at Mass. Personally, I prefer to keep hymns, but add to our beloved hymns the richness of chanting of the propers. This, in fact, is what the choir has been doing at the entrance of our Sunday 10:30 Mass over the last year.

During this coronavirus time, when we have been asked to refrain from congregational singing, I thought it would be nice to explore the propers. Rather than singing familiar hymns, hymns we might be tempted to sing, our cantors will be chanting the propers. Sometimes they may chant the old Latin propers; usually, however, they will sing one of the many English chants that have been composed over the last decade. I think this change will work well at this time, especially given the brevity of our entrance and offertory processions of late. Chanting is one of the great treasures of our Catholic heritage, and I believe our recent revival of chant has been a great blessing to our liturgy. Let me know what you think. ***SAINT PETER SCHOOL NEWS***

Mission Statement: St. Peter School exists to

provide a nurturing environment where stu-

dents become Disciples of Jesus Christ, em-

brace the love of lifelong learning, and believe in

the dignity of all people.

Registration for PK-8 continues to be underway at St. Peter

School. Please e - mail [email protected] or

[email protected] for more information or to set up a

time to visit the school once we are open. Our office hours

are from 8:30 - 3:00 (M-Fr)

Some of our preschool students (about 20) will begin their

summer session on June 29th at St. Peter School. We look

forward to welcoming these youngest students back to

school! While this will be a different summer school ex-

perience for them based on social distancing guidelines and

other mandates, we know they will be happy to be back in a

familiar environment. May God bless them and their fami-

lies.

***SAINT PETER YOUTH GROUP*** YouTube Channel Please check out our YouTube channel St. Peter’s Youth Group for weekly videos of prayer & reflection!

Bible Study Every Wednesday teens from our Confirmation program and highschool/middleschool youth groups come together via ZOOM for bible study. The goal in each study is for our teens to find a line/word of scripture that best speaks to them, and allow that to be their focus for meditation in prayer as they dive into a deeper relationship with Christ. All teens in grades 8-12 are welcome to attend!

Youth Group Every Sunday teens in high school meet for Youth Group via ZOOM! During this time the teens can hangout virtually. They can still engage one another and see their friends faces! Each Sunday we cover a small topic, something that engages the teens in their spiritual life and we ask them to use it as reflec-tion for the week in their prayer life.

Volunteering Teens in our highschool leadership program (CREW) have been volunteering on Sundays to help with registration! Even though we are in a pandemic, we can all still lend a helping hand!
