Walk with Jesus During Holy Week

Part 2

The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. The stations are commonly used as a mini pilgrimage as the individual moves from station to station. At each station, the individual recalls and meditates on a specific event from Christ's last day. Specific prayers are recited, then the individual moves to the next station until all 14 are complete.

1. Jesus Is Condemned to Death. Pontius Pilate condemns Jesus to death. 2. Jesus Takes Up His Cross. Jesus willingly accepts and patiently bears his cross. 3. Jesus Falls the First Time. Weakened by torments and by loss of blood, Jesus falls beneath his cross. 4. Jesus Meets His Sorrowful Mother. Jesus meets his mother, Mary, who is filled with grief. 5. Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry the Cross. Soldiers force Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross. 6. Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus. Veronica steps through the crowd to wipe the face of Jesus. 7. Jesus Falls a Second Time. Jesus falls beneath the weight of the cross a second time. 8. Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem. Jesus tells the women to weep not for him but for themselves and for their children. 9. Jesus Falls the Third Time. Weakened almost to the point of death, Jesus falls a third time. 10. Jesus Is Stripped of His Garments. The soldiers strip Jesus of his garments, treating him as a common criminal. 11. Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross. Jesus’ hands and feet are nailed to the cross. 12. Jesus Dies on the Cross. After suffering greatly on the cross, Jesus bows his head and dies. 13. Jesus Is Taken Down From the Cross. The lifeless body of Jesus is tenderly placed in the arms of Mary, his mother. 14. Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb. Jesus’ disciples place his body in the tomb.

Palm Sunday begins Holy Week and com-memorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, just days before he was crucified.

Jesus' entry into Jerusalem manifested the coming of the kingdom that the King-Messiah was going to accomplish by the Passover of his Death and Resurrection. It is with the celebration of that entry on Palm Sunday that the Church's liturgy solemnly opens Holy Week. 560

During Palm Sunday Mass, palms are distributed to parishioners who carry them in a ritual procession into church. The palms are blessed and many people will fashion them into small crosses or other items of personal devotion.

Because the palms are blessed, they may not be discarded as trash. Instead, they are gathered at the church and burned to create the ashes used on Ash Wednesday.

Holy Thursday (or Maundy Thursday), the institution of Communion and the betrayal by Judas.

Good Friday, the arrest, trial, crucifixion, death, and burial of Jesus Christ.

Holy Saturday, the Sabbath on which Jesus rested in the grave.

Beginning with the Easter Triduum as its source of light, the new age of the Resurrection fills the whole liturgical year with its brilliance. Gradually, on either side of this source, the year is transfigured by the liturgy. It really is a "year of the Lord's favor." The economy of salvation is at work within the framework of time, but since its fulfillment in the Passover of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the culmination of history is anticipated "as a foretaste," and the kingdom of God enters into our time. 1168

Therefore Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the "Feast of feasts," the "Solemnity of solemnities," just as the Eucharist is the "Sacrament of sacraments" (the Great Sacra-ment). St. Athanasius calls Easter "the Great Sunday" and the Eastern Churches call Holy Week "the Great Week." The mystery of the Resurrection, in which Christ crushed death, permeates with its powerful energy our old time, until all is subjected to him. 1169 CCC

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION OF OUR LORD

Here I am Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night.

For 5 years, Christ - God - has been calling you to commit to Him in the Holy Family

Chapel at St. Peter Church. For 5 years He has asked, "Could you not watch one hour with me?" Ask yourself: Why has my answer been No? That is a serious question. Why "No"?

Where ever Christ is, is Heaven. The Eucharistic Christ is in the chapel, awaiting you, Heaven awaits you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. NOW and in Eternity. His Presence awaits your presence. With Love. This Lent, will you at last answer His call to you. Could you not watch one hour with Me? With a YES!!!

There are 12 chairs in the chapel. Most hours have only one adorer (one chair used.) A few have no committed adorer. Any of the 168 hours that God gives us each week are available for your commitment.

The following hours have no committed adorer.

Sun 9:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. ~ Mon 1:00 a.m. ~ Tues: 3:00 a.m. & 4:00 a.m. ~ Wed 2:00 a.m. ~ Sat 2:00 a.m.

"Be not afraid" or words to that effect are found over one hundred times in the Bible - The Word of God. Look at the crucifix. That's Christ's commitment to you, for you. Be not afraid. Come to Heaven, now!

To commit or talk about it, contact

Jim/Martha Coyne 321-6046 or

Vernon/Joanne Dunn 321-6896/355-3628.

Chalice for Vocations How can I repay the Lord for all His goodness to me? I will take the Chalice of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord…” (Psalm 116:12-13).

Praying for vocations is the most powerful way to support vocations. A vocation is a call from the Holy Spirit, a gift from God that is nurtured in prayer. When we pray for vocations, we lift up to our Father those men and women whom He is calling to follow Him in a special way.

There are prayers, Rosary, and card with pictures of the Diocese's seminarians. Visit our parish website to sign-up online: www.saintpetercatholicchurch.org
