PASTOR'S NOTES THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

The two disciples who encountered the Risen Lord on the road to Emmaus returned to the “Upper Room” to tell the others how they came to know Jesus “in the breaking of the bread”. Then Jesus appeared to them all in the Upper Room and greeted them all with these words of reconciliation: “Peace be withy you.” Instead of being filled with joy because they had seen the risen Christ, they were terrified by his presence. Why? Originally they locked themselves in the room because they were terrified about losing their lives for being fol-lowers of Jesus. Perhaps now they are terrified be-cause when they saw Jesus they saw that they were responsible for the wounds on his hands, feet and side because they chose not to protect him. The betrayed him when he needed them the most. Having plenty of reason to live in fear, Jesus was not angry, and his response was not a vengeful one. On the contrary, our Risen Lord greeted them warmly, assured them that they were forgiven and so calmed their fears. Then as an act of true humility and reconciliation, he invited them to have fellowship with him by asking for some-thing to eat. By accepting his invitation to eat, their doubts were removed and they accepted his for-giveness. Each Sunday we bring our doubts with us, doubts that have been the cause of our sinfulness. Yet Jesus does not reprimand us but invites us with words of reconcili-ation to eat with him as a sign to us that we have been forgiven. But it does not end here. Like the Disciples on the road to Emmaus, we too are called go to our sisters and brothers who have locked themselves in the upper rooms of their own creation and tell them how we encountered Jesus in the breaking of the bread. How he has forgiven us and then perhaps they too will come to know him. Annual Catholic Appeal—Prison Ministry

Chaplaincies at 27 different facilities impact the lives of over 25,000 inmates. These include eight sheriff’s jails, five juvenile detention centers, three state prisons and

four federal detention facilities. Ministry supported by the Annual Catholic Appeal responds to the hunger that many of these inmates have to deepen their rela-tionship with God. I invite you to prayerfully consider your response as a faithful steward of the gifts which God has joyfully be-stowed on you. If you did not receive a Pledge Bro-chure and Envelope, please ask one of the Hospitality Ministers who will give you one. When you have made your decision, you may return your pledge envelope in the offering during Mass, or drop it off at the Parish Of-fice. You may also go to giving.sdcatholic.org for more information or to make a secure online pledge or dona-tion. Your participation, regardless of the amount, makes a difference. Your generosity brings you joy and brings joy to those who benefit from your gift. Ronnie Custorio, osa who was here last week to help out which allowed me to take my Easter Break. I pray that our Risen Lord will continue to bless you with his love so that in moments of hardship or sorrow you will have his hope and in times of joy and laughter know his peace.
