PASTOR'S NOTES THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Fr. Mark Link tells the story of an American army chaplain who had just given a homily at a mass for American Servicemen in a cathedral in Europe. The theme of his homily was; “Be proud of your Catholic faith; don’t be ashamed to practice it in public.” After the Mass a sailor was so moved by the homily, he stopped the chaplain in front of the Cathedral. He asked the chaplain, “Father will you hear my confes-sion?” The chaplain said, “I’d be happy to hear it.”

With that the sailor knelt down right there on the sidewalk in front of the cathedral. The startled chaplain said, “Never mind kneeling, people will stare!” The heck with them the young man said, “Let them stare, I am proud of my faith!” The feast of the Ascension in one of the most important feasts of the entire liturgical year. We might compare it to the passing on of the baton from one runner to the next in a relay race. On this feast nearly 2000 years ago, Jesus passed the baton of continuing his work to his followers. The way we complete that work is by witnessing to our faith. Perhaps not as dramatic as the sailor, it could be as simple as making the sign of the cross before you eat a meal in a restaurant. Or by helping as a stew-ard in the Religious Formation Program, Soup Kitchen, the Thrift Store and the many other ministries here in the parish and in the general community. Simply put, the Feast of the Ascen-sion reminds of our two-fold responsibility as followers of Jesus. The first is to witness to our faith and second to respond to the faith using the talents God has gifted us with. Saint Matthias-May 14

St. Matthias was a disciple of Jesus who bore witness to his baptism and resurrection and was present when the Holy Spirit came upon the disci-ples at Pentecost. Because of this, his name was put forward as a candidate to become one of the twelve apostles, with the departure of Judas. Two men were nominated, Matthias and Joseph Bars-abbas. Lots were drawn and Matthias was chosen

and enrolled with the eleven apostles. Little else is known about his life; there are confusions in some traditions with the deeds of Matthew the apostle. Some believe he preached in Judea and then Ethiopia before being martyred Happy Mother’s Day! I wish to offer to all our mothers this special bless-ing taken from the Book of Blessing: “O Gracious God, bless all our Mothers, strengthen them with your love. We thank them for the example of their faith and love, which they give to us their sons and daughters. Grant that we may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect.”

Congratulations Confirmands! Please continue to pray for the over 80 candidates who will be confirmed this Tuesday. Congratulations in advance and may God “who began a good work in you” bring it to fulfillment”.

Welcome Bishop Dolan Bishop John Dolan will confirm our candidates this coming Tuesday evening at 6 pm. This is his first visit to our parish since his ordination last year. Bishop John Dolan is a San Diego native and grew up in Clairemont. He was educated in local Catholic schools at St. Mary Magdalene parish and University High School, before attending St. Francis Seminary and the University of San Die-

go, where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Philosophy. He con-tinued his studies at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, Calif., where he earned a Master Degree in Divinity and Theology. He was ordained to the priesthood on July 1, 1989 by Bishop Leo T. Maher and has served as a priest in the Diocese of San Diego for nearly 28 years. He began as an associate pastor at St. Michael’s parish in Paradise Hills before serving at Santa Sophia in Spring Valley, St. Rose of Lima in Chula Vista, St. Mary Star of the Sea in Oceanside and at St. Michael’s parish in Poway. Most recently, he served as Pastor at St. John the Evan-gelist and St. Vincent de Paul parishes in Hillcrest and Mission Hills. In his new role, Auxiliary Bishop Dolan will serve as Moderator of the Curia and Vicar for Clergy at the Pastoral Center, where he will assist Bishop Robert McElroy in administering the dio-cese and overseeing the assignment of priests and clergy at 98 parishes. Annual Catholic Appeal If you have not made your ACA pledge or did not receive a Pledge Brochure and Envelope, please ask one of the Hospitali-ty Ministers who will give you one. When you have made your decision, you may return your PLEDGE ENVELOPE in the offer-ing during Mass or drop it off at the Parish Office. You may also go to giving.sdcatholic.org for more information or to make a secure online pledge or donation. Your participation, regardless of the amount, makes a difference. Your generosity brings you joy and brings joy to those who benefit from your gift. Mother’s Day Novena If you wish to have your Mother living or deceased remembered in the novena of Masses during the month of May use the enve-lope that is in your monthly packet or use one of the envelopes which are located at the Main Entrance of the Church. The Feast of Pentecost Next Sunday is the feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit de-scended upon the disciples to give birth to the Church. In honor of this great day remember to wear Red, the liturgical color of the Holy Spirit I pray that our Risen Lord will continue to bless with his abun-dant love and for the protection of our patron, Peter the Apostle.

Grace is but glory begun and glory is but grace perfected.

GET ON THE BUS

Friday April 20, 2018 was a special day! It began in the wee hours of the morning for those participants of Get On The Bus who arrived at St. Mel’s Church in Norco for breakfast an hour ahead of a scheduled 6:30 AM arrival. This delicious meal fortified us for the wonderful day ahead at California Institution for Women in Chino. Upon arrival in Chino, we witnessed warm, cuddly, welcoming leaps into the anxious arms of the Mothers, followed by a delicious overabundance of snacks, & games. Since this was our 8th year participating in this event, we no-ticed the maturity of the children as they have grown over the years. The room was quieter, more organized & peaceful. At one point my attention was drawn to a very cute 5 yr. old as his mother coaxed him to the face paint-ing table. It took the mother quite a bit of time to con-vince this young boy to have his face painted. Reluctant-ly he approached the face artist & whispered his request: “A minion.” He was very particular in his color choices. As his face was being painted his mother stood proudly behind & watched. In conversation I learned that Johnny lives with his Dad all day & never goes out so he is very fearful of everything. She proudly proclaimed that she had gotten him to agree to have his face painted. This was a big deal to this 24 yr. old Mom who admitted that she is lacking in parenting skills. She said she plans to work on that when she gets out in July. She said her grandmother had told her to always pray for miracles in life! Sadly her grandmother passed away 2 years ago of a drug overdoes. Hopefully miracles will continue in her life & Johnny’s life. Hopefully this one day of family reun-ion will live on in all their lives and cause miracles to con-tinue multiplying. The St Peter’s community can take great pride in their commitment to these miracles by all the donations (slightly over $6000), travel bags, stay con-nected bags, teddy bears etc. Thanks to all!!!

This activity is sponsored by our parish pro-life ministry which is known by the name, “Beloved" Pro-Life Ministry, Respecting life from womb to tomb. There will be members of our Pro-life Ministry at all the exits of our Sanctuary to offer you a baby bottle to fill with loose change, bills, or checks for the Fallbrook Pregnan-cy Resource Center. Fill them up between Mothers’ Day and Father’s Day and return them to St. Peter's Catholic Community. We will be receiving them after all Masses on June 16th and 17th, Father's Day weekend. You may return them on or before Father's Day Weekend. There will be a box to place them in in the vestibule of the church. Another option is to return the bottles to the par-ish office. Help make our first Baby Boomerang a success on be-half of Fallbrook Pregnancy Resource Center. Stop by our table next week for information about our ministry and ask how you can help or just to say hi. We meet on the 3rd Sunday of each month following the 9 am Mass in the courtyard. Thank you for your support, and may God bless you.
