Jonah (“dove”) lived some 800 years before Jesus. Evidently, he missed the message from Yaweh, (in the Law), about “leading all
people and nations to God”. Jonah was “over-zealous for his faith”. Simultaneously, Jonah was defensive and vindictive. He was terribly disappointed that God wanted to save the infidels of Nineveh. Sound familiar? (This same dangerous attitude affected the Pharisees, Peter and James and John and Saint Paul). The Pharisees wanted Jesus to give the okay to destroy a woman caught in adultery. Peter cut off someone’s ear to “defend” Jesus. James and John (Boanerges= “Sons of thunder”) wanted Jesus to destroy an entire village of non-believers. Saul of Tarsus assisted in the killing of the first Martyr: Stephen. The Knights Templar “killed in the name of Jesus” to rid the world of infidels. It is sickening and frightening that any Believer would engage in the aforementioned. Yet they did. They were blinded by judgement, self-righteousness, and the desire to punish. We frequently justify mean-spirited actions. Take care my friends: the latter is NOT of God. Do not be a Jonah in 2021. Christians have one important mission: lead people to God. If we believers do not physically reach out and truly be a “Jesus” to people, how will they know the love of our unseen/transcendent God?

We are grateful to continue to serve you, but we must keep in mind the safety and well-being of all. Please review the following loving reminders from our Parish Business Office: — Follow the requirements detailed on all signs and the direction of the Parish Staff and Clergy at all times. — All parish gatherings and meetings (aside from Mass and Sacraments) have been postponed until further notice.
Parish groups and ministries are not permitted to gather at this time. — Making a reservation for Sunday Mass is essential to planning and preparing for the Mass, including staffing, ensuring ushers and volunteers for sanitizing, hosts, and the check-in process. Please be sure to make a reservation by phoning the Parish Office and leaving a message or via our website. You may do so until 2:00 pm on Saturday. — Bring your own seating for Sunday Mass. Beach chairs or blanket recommended (we are continuing to hold Mass outdoors). Adoration is available 24 hours a day in the vestibule of the church. A face-mask which covers the mouth and nose must be worn. A distance of at least six feet must be maintained from those outside of your household. Gathering with those outside of your household is not permitted. Please do not sit in a circle or move near the Centennial Garden to do this.
— Do not linger and mingle in the outdoor church space or in the parking lot. — Our Parish offices are closed to the public, but still operating. Please call or email with a request or need. Information on Masses — Sunday Mass will continue to be held outdoors in the school quad. The entrance is clearly marked and located at the large gate, which opens directly to the quad and sits in front of the Parish Hall. Handicap spaces are marked near the entry gate. Social distancing and sanitation protocols remain in effect. A mask is required at all times. Please bring your own seating—a chair or blanket. There is no coverage from the elements. Hats may be worn during Mass and umbrellas are allowed. Visit the parish website or phone the Parish Office for reservations and more information.
Daily Mass is held outdoors in the parking lot at the rear of the campus, behind the Parish Center, parallel to the Animal Shelter. No reservation is required for Daily Mass. Sunday Mass Reservations — Please be sure to make a reservation for Sunday Mass in advance. You may do so on our website: straphaelsb.org or by phoning the Parish Office: 805-967-5641 and leaving a message. Reservations open on Monday and close on Saturday at 2:00 pm. You will receive an email confirmation or phone call from our office staff within 24 hours. This is necessary and helps with planning and preparation for the Mass and check-in process. We appreciate your understanding and support of this process. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) — The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm, outdoors on the school quad. Safe distancing guidelines are in place. A mask is required. Please be mindful of the prayerful state and adhere to silence. Exposition of The Blessed Sacrament — The Blessed Sacrament is exposed in the vestibule 24 hours a day.

2020 Donation Statements — As required by law, all donation statements have been mailed to St. Raphael parishioners who have made single contributions of $250 or more in 2020 or who have called and requested a statement. These statements do not include Together in Mission donations which are acknowledged by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has traditionally held a “Fifth Sunday” Collection. We are not able to do this because of Covid-19 restrictions. If you would like to donate, a check made payable to “St. Vincent de Paul” may be placed in an offering basket at Mass, or dropped in the mail slot next to the front door of the Parish Office. Talk to your children about social media challenges. Children have spent many months at home now, separated from friends and classmates. Social media is a great tool to stay in touch, but there are definitely dangerous aspects to much “screen time” that parents need to be aware about. Social media challenges range from funny and harmless to risky and dangerous — and sometimes even illegal. If your child has social media accounts, talk to them about making smart choices and about knowing the difference between harmless pranks and seriously dangerous stunts. From The Principal’s Desk
Dear St. Raphael School Families and Friends,
As we start a new year, it’s always nice to reflect on the past. As many of you know, we were one of the first schools in the area to go “live” with distance learning last March, only missing one school day. This school year, we were the first school in the Archdiocese to have our waiver approved to open for in-person instruction. These continue to be proud moments for our school, and we need to be thankful for our staff, amazing teachers and dedicated personnel. As we continue to navigate the school year with the on-going pandemic, we also want to thank all of our families for their constant support and diligence in helping us maintain our open status by keeping children home if they have any symptoms or are sick. We are all in this together!
Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. For the past nine years, St. Raphael School has sent “Hearts from Home” to our servicemen and women around the world. We are asking that each St. Raphael School student create at least five Valentine’s Day cards for these special people

Important information on our Confirmation and Youth Ministry programs as we adapt to our current situation. We have adjusted and adapted our regular Youth Ministry and Confirmation Program based on the COVID-19 guidelines of the Governor of California and Archbishop Gomez.
Life Teen High Youth Ministry: Life Nights have been postponed until further notice. Once we are able to meet in person, we will evaluate re-starting Sunday evening Life Nights.
Jr. High Ministry: Students in need of First Communion and/or Baptism will be offered classes conducted via Zoom (unless we are able to meet in person). Classes for 7th and 8th graders started in October. More info: www.straphaelslifeteen.com or email jvasellina@ straphaelsb.org.
Confirmation: This is a two year program. Teens can enter Confirmation no earlier than 9th grade. Year 2 Confirmation started on September 21 via Zoom and met for 11 consecutive Mondays. Year 2 classes ended December 7.
Confirmation Year 1 began January 11, 2021 and ends April 26, 2021. Registration for Year 1 opened on November 1.
