St. Rose of Lima Adopt A Family Program

The Social Action Committee is preparing for its annual “Adopt-A-Family” Program for Christmas 2015. It is expected that there will be approximately 80 families in need of help providing gifts for their children on Christmas. This will require more than 100 donors. Please consider adopting a family this year or pairing up with others to adopt a family. Families to be adopted have one to eight children up to the age of 12. The Social Action Committee will be happy to pair you with a family with the number of children that you wish to adopt. We ask that each child receive a minimum of 6 gifts: 3 clothing items and 3 age appropriate wish list items. Gifts for parents are optional. Last year’s family recipients were truly thankful for your incredible kindness. We are hopeful that you will consider adopting a family this year. Thanks to your generosity, our parish program continues to bring the light of Christ to all families at Christmas. Please contact Marcia Roberts at the e-mail address below or phone by October 19, 2015 if you are interested in partici-pating. Thank you is advance for supporting the Social Action Committee Adopt-A-Family program. May God bless you and your family this Christmas Season. In Christ, Fr. E. Joseph Byerley Marcia Roberts Pastor St. Rose of Lima [email protected] (856) 366-4519

October – the month of the Rosary

This past Wednesday, October 7th, the Church honored Mary in the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Actually, the Church celebrates the whole month of October as the month of the Rosary. The Holy Rosary is a tremendous prayer that has been praised and prayed for centu-ries and centuries. In 2002 under the inspiration of Pope Saint John Paul II, the Church cele-brated a “Year of the Rosary” much like we are celebrating the “Jubilee Year of Mercy” this year.

Pope Saint John Paul II issued a beautiful Apostolic Letter on the Rosary. It is entitled, Rosarium Virginis Mariae and can be read on the Vatican Website (www.vatican.va). It is a worthwhile read. It is in this letter that Pope Saint John Paul II introduced the five Luminous Mysteries which, added to the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries offer a very full medi-tation on Christ and the salvation he has brought to the world.

Ultimately, this is what the Rosary is about. Along with Mary, through the prayers of

the Rosary we contemplate the great mysteries of our salvation brought about in and through Jesus Christ. How can we come up with a better “prayer partner” that Mary, who was, and is, always at the side of her Son? If the vicious Roman soldiers and the hate filled mob were not able to keep her from the side of her Son dying on the Cross, now in heaven where else can she be except next to Jesus? This is why the Rosary is one of the most powerful prayers we have available to us. Because we know that if we pray the Rosary with a sincere and an open heart, we are praying along with Our Lady and we know where she always is – next to Christ, her Son. Thus we can be assured that our prayer and our intentions will find the warmest welcome, for the Lord has never been in the practice of refusing his mother.

So as we continue this month of the Rosary and reflect on this great prayer of the

Church, I will leave you with the encouragement that Pope Saint John Paul II concluded in his letter on the Rosary, “I look to all of you, brothers and sisters of every state of life, to you, Christian families, to you, the sick and elderly, and to you, young people: confidently take up the Rosary once again. Rediscover the Rosary in the light of Scripture, in harmony with the Lit-urgy, and in the context of your daily lives.” Our Lady of the Rosary, Pray for us. God bless you, Father Joseph Byerley

This weekend, our country is celebrating Christopher Colum-bus. "Christopher" means "Christ Bearer" and Columbus comes from the Latin word meaning "dove," which is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. Christopher Columbus was a bearer of Christ to the New World. Under his leadership and bravery, a "New World" was discovered. Wit-ness was given to the Lord, the Gospel, our Catholic faith and saints, and our Blessed Mother through the names he gave to his boats and to the new lands and towns he discov-ered. The faith was taught to the natives by the clergy and religious he brought over on his many voyages to the "New World." Meanwhile, the "Knights of Columbus" have contin-ued a strong witness to our Catholic faith through their many charitable services on behalf of the needy, unborn, retarded, the youth, and to our country. They offer scholarships, loans, and insurance programs for the needy, and in some areas they offer catechism courses. Socials, breakfasts, dinners, and clothing drives are also promoted to raise funds.. Their found-er, Fr. Michael McGivney , is being considered for beatifica-tion. You can learn more about the Knights of Columbus' activ-ities from books in our Spiritual Center Library or stop in at the Council Hall on Crystal Lake Ave. in Haddon Township on a Friday or Monday evening. It is the largest global Catholic mens' service organization, and it is often praised by the Vati-can for their excellent service to God and the Church.

Are you an RN? If you are then you have the unique perspective of seeing how the mind, body and spirit work together for the overall

health and wellbeing of each patient. It is this combination of physical, emotional and spiritual care that heals the whole

person. If this sounds like something you believe in, you may want to explore the ministry of Parish Nursing. This ministry continues the healing work of Jesus in your faith community by tending to the needs of its people. St. Rose would like to

develop this ministry and you could be a vital part of it. There will be an informational meeting in the near future to answer questions and provide more information. If you would like to attend, please contact Mary Anne Serra, RN at (856)583-6120
