Jubilee Year of Mercy May 22, 2016 Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity The word mercy, Pope Francis declared in his announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, “reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity” (Misericordiae Vultus, 2). For mercy is how God comes to meet us; mercy is the fundamental law helping us recognize everyone as brothers and sisters; mercy is the bridge connecting God and humanity, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. God’s self-revelation as a life-giving, love-sharing Trinity of Persons draws us closer to God in friendship and communion. Both Judaism and Islam consider mercy one of God’s most important attributes. Israel unceasingly proclaims God boundless in mercy. Islam addresses the Creator as “Merciful and Kind,” believing divine mercy limitless, its doors always open. May this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis prays, open us to more fervent dialogue, deepen our mutual understanding, eliminate all closed-minded disrespect, and drive out every form of violence and discrimination. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Are You Registered?

We are delighted that you’ve joined us for worship and we hope that you’ll return to pray with us often.

As a church community, we offer lots of services to our members in addition to our weekly worship If you have moved into the area, we invite you to become a member.

Feel free to call the parish office at 352-746-9422 or email us at: [email protected].

You may also fill out a new parishioner registration form which are located on the table in the Church narthex and on the St. Scholastica website: www.stscholastica.org.

Even if you are here infrequently, we welcome you to join our Parish Family.

The Most Holy Trinity

Baptism Registered parishioners should contact the office for instruction. This should be done at least six months before the birth of your baby.

Marriages Registered parishioners should contact the parish office at least six months in advance of making marriage arrangements.

Sick Calls Please contact the parish office if you need a priest to come to your home to anoint you, or to be anointed at a weekday Mass.

If your child or children have reached the age of 21 and are away at school or no longer residing with you, please encourage them to register at a parish where they currently reside. Establishing church membership is very important. Should they be asked to serve as a

Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor, their parish of residence will need to verify their church membership and attendance and provide them with the required documentation. Please feel free to call the parish office at 746-9422 if you have any questions.

Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all

Catholics are not registered in a parish?

Please encourage your friends and family to register!

Registering is important because:

• If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all - especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register?

• Registered parishioners receive helpful information about our parish.

• Registration is needed to obtain Baptism/Confirmation sponsor form. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office, the narthex and on the parish website.

Week 1 Anger and Forgiveness

Catholic psychotherapist Deacon Dr. Bob McDonald provides a spiritual and psychological prescription for overcoming the sinful anger that poisons the mind of Christ within, causing alienation and division. His practical wisdom shows that only by learning how to forgive can we hope to promote healing and understanding in our relationships and enjoy the blessings of a forgiving heart.

As difficult as it is to understand the Holy Trinity, I am amazed that Jesus even bothered to tell us about the Father, the Spirit, and himself. As if his own life, his teachings about God’s love, his miracles, his death and resurrection were not enough, he told us something about God that we never would have imagined: There are three Persons in one God. It is also something we cannot completely comprehend. So instead of trying to explain it, let’s look at what it means for us believers.

One thing it shows is that God wants to be known by us. Since theologians and spiritual writers have been helping us do that for almost two thousand years, it may not seem like a big deal. But in ancient times, people expected their gods to be mysterious and hidden. Many cultures thought that you could control a spirit or god if you knew its name. So knowing anything about the inner life of a god would be huge. But our God is the only God, whom no one can control. God sees us not as a threat but as beloved children. Just as a couple falling in love wants to know everything about each other, so God wants to be known by those whom God loves. That leads to my second point.

The Trinity also shows us that “God is love” (1 John 4:16) because the three Persons are united in one God. The Persons of the Trinity already love each other perfectly, so God shares that love with us. God calls us to be united in love with God and with each other. Remember that God knows us perfectly and still loves us. How many of us would want another person to know everything about us? Yet knowing our weaknesses and our sins does not hurt God’s love for us. On the contrary, our weaknesses allow God to help us by answering our prayers or inspiring someone to come to our assistance. God permits us to sin, knowing that we can experience divine love in forgiveness. We may not be able to grasp the full meaning of the Holy Trinity, but knowing that God shares this with faithful people helps us to love God even more. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Most Holy Trinity

Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, one of the most confounding mysteries of our faith. Through this mystery we experience our relationship to God: Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit. This relationship is not easy to understand or to describe. It does not become clearer through analysis. Its complexity mirrors the complexity of all our relationships. We understand our relationships with our spouses, our children, our parents, and our friends only through daily give-and-take, annual rituals, and the life-changing moments we share. We understand our relationships only as we live them. The relationships we have with those we love, and who love us, sustain us through an uncertain and difficult life. This is the Holy Trinity.

Trinity Sunday (5/22/16) The love of God is being poured forth into our hearts. Open yourself to receive and share that love. Be open to God calling you to spread love through a Church vocation. (Romans5:1-5)

Complete Relationship

What is striking about these readings is that each is incomplete. None of them, in describing creation (Proverbs and the Psalm) or the acts of the Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit (Romans and John), offers a complete picture of the relationship between the Holy Trinity and us. What they offer is a description of a moment in our relationship, a memory of a time and an event when our relationship made sense even though that sense may be beyond our ability to describe fully. Often that is all that our faith offers, that is, a memory of what is possible, what is promised, what has been given. A memory of eternity, of love beyond understanding is to be cherished and nurtured even if not fully understood. This is the Holy Trinity.

One Minute Meditations

Make it a good day

Start the morning by offering the day to God and spend a few minutes counting your blessings. Then do all you can to enjoy the day. Don’t let life’s minor irritants affect your mood.

JOURNEY OF FAITH We are on a long and eventful journey. Today’s readings for Trinity Sunday succinctly cover the depth and breadth of our human travels. The very beginnings of our journey are revealed in the reading from Proverbs. God’s plan filled with divine wisdom was born before the earth was made. In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of his own personal journey. He has come from the Father and will return to the Father. Only

then will the Advocate—the Spirit of Truth—take us onward. This does not diminish the fact that the journey will be hard. The very setting of the Gospel is the night before Jesus died. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, “[W]e even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven

character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4). Ultimately, our human journey is modeled by the Holy Trinity—a family of love among Father, Son, and Spirit that we are all called to emulate. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
