SHARING THE GOSPEL WITH CHILDREN

TODAY’S GOSPEL REFLECTION

2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA)

Thanks to the generosity of many families here at St. Saviour a total of $26,940.00 was contributed to the 2017 CMA from our parish community. This year, our goal is $24,713.00. So far, $23,045.00 has been pledged which is 93% of our goal. Archbishop Schnurr sends his thanks to everyone from St. Saviour who has pledged to the 2018 Catholic Min-istries Appeal. If you have not yet made your pledge, please consider doing so this week. These important local ministries depend on our help each year. You will find extra pledge envelopes in the bookracks in church To make a pledge securely online, please visit CatholicAppeal.net. Thank you!

Sharing the Gospel Have you ever just wanted to be alone for a while? Jesus and his disciples knew what that felt like. They wanted to be alone to talk and rest, but crowds of people were sur-rounding them. Even when Jesus and his disciples tried to slip away unnoticed, people followed them anyway. They arrived only to find more crowds of people. This was cer-tainly not the quiet time they had planned on. Being patient and kind, Jesus gave up what he wanted, and he began to teach the crowds. Prayer Dear God, thank you that Jesus gave up what he wanted, just so he could help other people. Help me to follow his example. Amen. Something to Draw Draw a picture of Jesus surrounded by large crowds of people. Mission for the Week Spend some alone time with Jesus tonight. If you get inter-rupted because someone else needs help, that's okay. Go help, and then come back to your alone time with Jesus again.

"Now what?" It's a difficult thing to hear, isn't it? The train comes late, a child unexpectedly cries, and the latest public policy debate flares up in the news. Life throws us curveballs, and we have no choice but to adapt. Jesus and the Apostles find themselves in that exact situa-tion in today's Gospel.

The Apostles have returned from their two-by-two missionary journey. As Jesus hears all of their stories, he knows they need time to recover and refresh. "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." Their wilderness retreat is short-lived, however, as eager crowds discover their location. Jesus is well aware of the needs of his disciples. Still, as he looks out at the crowd, "His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd." The rest break is over. "He began to teach them many things."

For those of us who have experienced a taste of much-needed relaxation only to have it taken away abrupt-ly, perhaps we surmise what the Apostles might have been feeling in that moment. But Jesus isn't being inconsiderate of the Apostles needs. He offers them -- and us -- a lived lesson. St. John Paul II wrote, "The whole of Christ's life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special affec-tion for the little and the poor, his acceptance of the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world" (On Catechesis in Our Time, 9). In Jesus' choice to teach, we see all of these things: sacrificial love, concern for the mar-ginalized, and priority of people's needs over personal preference. These aren't abstract ideals. They're lived real-ities as we strive to live and love like Jesus. When a new obstacle confronts you in your life, how do you respond?

FOOD COLLECTION ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

You’ve probably noticed that our food collections are al-most always for St. Vincent de Paul. You don’t have to wait for the “official” weekend of the collection. Feel free to bring your donations to church or the office anytime. Each week we will list items that are needed. This week they are: laundry deter-gent, bar soap, stuffing, hamburger helper, canned peas, canned carrots, tuna, canned meat and shampoo. Please place your donations in the bins at the doors in church or bring them to the Parish Office. Thank you for your continued generosity. We could not continue to serve our neighbors in need without you!

We welcome to our Parish

QUESTION

AND ANSWER

July 22 is the feast of Mary Magdalene. Who was she and is it true that she was a prostitute who followed Jesus around in his ministry? Recent biblical scholarship has been trying for a long time to correct Mary Magdalene's misconstrued repu-tation as a prostitute. Biblical information reveals her as one of the most important disciples of Jesus, following and financially supporting him during his ministry. She is also a faithful witness both to the Crucifixion and the first to see the risen Jesus. Further, in John's Gospel, she is commis-sioned by the risen Jesus to announce the good news to his disciples. Thus, she becomes the first evangelizer and proclaimer of the risen Lord. Her reputation as a prostitute arose from the mis-understandings of certain texts in Luke. Luke 8:2 reports Mary as being a follower of Jesus "from whom seven de-mons had gone out." This passage follows Luke's story of the sinful woman, a prostitute, who bathed Jesus' feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. Since that woman is not named, there came to be an association of that woman with Mary Magdalene, "from whom seven demons had gone out." Thus Mary became known as a prostitute. The readings and prayers for her feast day make no mention of her reputation as a sinner. Rather, they em-phasize and highlight her role as the first witness to the risen Lord, and the first one commissioned by Jesus to tell of the good news to the disciples. Let us continue to be Mary Magdalene to the world.

The movie is “kinda” selected by those who attend. We will only show G & PG rated movies to the Junior High, and G, PG, or PG 13 rated to the High school folks. Gaining movie consensus is part of the evening, and we have lots of movies from which to select. “P, D, & M” is always a great time for all. We hope you join us! Parents, please know that you are very welcome to join us for all or part of any Youth Group / How gathering. You may drop in at any time. If you want to help us during the gatherings, you will need to complete in advance VIRTUS training. We hope to see you. Highschoolers of the Well, HOW 90 minutes on Monday nights during the school year is less that 1% of the time you have each week. Lots of kids for lots of years from lots of high schools have found those 90 minutes to be wonderful, helpful, fun, spiritual, encouraging, entertaining, relaxing, and good. Been before, please plan to return. New to high school, give us a try. Not sure, no prob-lem, come a few times and see if it works for you. We’ll start right after Labor Day. Plug HOW into your calen-dars. Mondays 7:00-8:30PM. Students Taking Action We like to highlight kids and their efforts in this space. We like to celebrate good things, good causes, good behaviors, good attitudes, and good! Let’s actively seek to catch kids doing good! And when you do, please let us know so we can celebrate them. If you’re not seeing all the great things the young Catho-lics in our Parish are doing, then you’re not watching! Cheer ‘em on, lift ‘em up, appreciate ‘em, lead ‘em … And watch them grow!
