Beaver Bulletin1st Quarter – November 2018

A Word from Our Principal

Aloha St. Theresa School Ohana!

It has been an exciting 1st quarter of the school year 2018-2019 and there is more to

come. We had Back to School Night, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Halloween

Family Night, School-Sponsored Masses, Block-Rosary crusade, and much learning

in the classroom. With an upgrade in the infrastructure of our internet system, the

7th and 8th grade Social Studies classes have moved forward with on-line learning

and more usage of technology in all classrooms is taking place.

Across all grades and subject areas students and teachers collaborate in the learning

process through innovative teaching practices, feedback and student input into their

learning and assessment. The skills necessary for 21st learning and the common

language used to articulate and foster these values are slowly becoming part of the

STS culture.

Our school has undertook a project-base-learning activity that involves math,

science, engineering, agriculture, study of soil composition, irrigation, and tender

loving care. They started the Kupuna-Student garden. Hopefully in the spring, the

school will witness the blooming and harvesting of their hard work, and a gazebo

built for those that seek peace and tranquility during their day will soon be in the

planning. Our goal is to have the kupuna or elders of the greater community in this

district come and work with our children. We want our children to interact with the

kupuna so they may learn respect and gain knowledge from a different perspective.

Next stop is our fall Service-Learning project, Misa de Gallo sponsored-breakfast

and Christmas program. It’s exciting to be here at STS! Learning never stops and

God’s love continues to out-pour in many ways.

What’s Shakin!!Ms. Buted- Study Skills, Health, Counselor

WELCOME! Parents, guardians, and students to the 2018-2019 school

year. As first quarter came and went, the middle schoolers gained a

handful of knowledge in my Study Skills and Health classes.

In Study Skills, the students learned how to Set school and personal goals. In order to set

goals, students first need to learn how to establishing priorities. Writing a list of priorities

and being able to identify each one from most important to least important. Lastly, with

every goal comes an action plan. Learning to schedule time and creating detailed steps in

order to reach their goals.

In the 7th grade Health class, students learned about personal care covering topics such as,

hygiene, body odor, skin care, importance of sunscreen, and dental care. Students had a lot

of fun learning new facts on why they should take care of themselves internally and

externally.

In the 8th grade Health class, we focused on muscle groups and being able to research and

identify which workouts work different parts of the muscles. After further study, the

students were able to demonstrate the proper form for each workout.

Its that time again! The 8th graders are visiting potential High Schools as they look forward

to the future during their last year at STS. So far, the students had a chance to hear from

Maryknoll, Damien, St. Francis, and visit the campus of St. Louis and Sacred Hearts

Academy. It is never too early to start looking into the schools for your children!

Welcome back to our returning students and a big WELCOME to our new students! Music

classes rung in the new school year with a bang and went right down to work! Preschoolers are

singing and dancing to the music and finding the beat. Kindergarten and 1st grade are

reviewing “the beat” and learning the difference between beat and rhythm. In addition, they

took part in a musical note scavenger hunt, looking for different things around campus that

have the same beat/count as a quarter note & half note. The 2nd graders dived right into the

recorders, learning how to hold and blow quietly into the

recorder and to use their fingers to cover the holes to play

the notes BAG. 3rd and 4th graders have been also working

on the recorders with more songs to play! The 3rd graders

went back to their recorders with ease and are also reviewing

their BAG notes and songs on their instruments. The 4th

graders will be participating in Recorder Karate program –

after completion of each song/level, students will receive

a “belt” (colored string) and will be able to go to the next song/level. In 5th grade, the students

were introduced to the ukulele, learning the parts and history of the ukulele. They are working

on finger exercises and strumming patterns. The 6th and 7th graders are also using the ukulele –

6th grade is reviewing strumming and picking patterns and introduced to basic chords (C, F, G)

on the ukulele. 7th graders are also reviewing patterns and working on various songs with their

instrument. 8th graders are doing well with the guitars, learning “Canon in D” in parts.

Physical Education News!!Mrs. Gabriel room 106

It has been an awesome time watching our students getting into

motion, learning new skills, thinking outside the box, strategizing

and simply playing. If you have an Elementary student, ask

them how awesome they were in class. If you have a Middle

school student, ask them about their personal goal.

PreschoolMs. Magdalena Collins & Ms. Wendy Lim

Aloha Families & Friends! It has been an

amazing first quarter! We were so blessed to

start our 4th year with 23 students! Thanks to

all the love and support of our families &

friends we have been able to grow in our

enrollment!

The preschoolers have learned so much over

first 3 months of school. Each day they work

on their phonics skills, counting & number

recognition, writing their first & last names,

singing songs and practicing dances.

They also learned many new things through

mini-studies about the weather, the life cycle

of a pumpkin plant, fire safety and so much

more! What they love to do most is to share

what they are learning about. We always make

sure to take a quick walking trip to the Office

& Library to share songs and a little

presentation about their mini-studies. They

love to visit our office. They greet everyone in

the office and help me to turn in forms and

practice using polite words and interactions

and they love to share hugs!

Every Monday students visit Mrs. Pabo for

Music & Drama class. She teaches them about

many aspects of music including pitch and

finding the beat. They enjoy her energy &

enthusiasm and look forward to her class each

week.

In P.E. with Mrs. Gabriel, our preschoolers

work on their listening skills as well as their

Gross Motor Development. They learn

through fun activities that allow them to

practice many skills like skipping and hopping

and working on their hand-eye coordination.

They love their PE classes and enjoy learning

through play and experiencing many activities

both indoors and outdoors.

It has been an exciting first quarter and we

look forward to learning and growing as the

year progresses. We want to thank our

families for their continued love and support.

We are so very blessed to have you! God is

Good! All The Time! All the Time, God is

Good!

Kicking-Off The School Year With A

Great Start!Mrs. Herndon and Mrs. Seto

Kindergarten*Homeroom 102

Our first three months of Kindergarten

have passed by quickly and I have

noticed a few changes in the students.

They are learning to become good

friends and are interacting positively.

They are learning about school routines

and rules and are becoming more

independent! Students have also

become more comfortable in the

school environment and are eager

participants in all of our activities.

October was filled with fun and

wonderful activities including our first

field trip, service learning project and

Holy Rosary prayer with the 7th grade

class.

In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly designated September 21st as the

International Day of Peace, a day of cease-fire and peace-building activities to be celebrated

around the world.

One of the peace-building activities, Pinwheels for Peace, was created by two Florida

teachers, Ann Ayres and Ellen McMillan, in 2005. The spinning of pinwheels in the wind

has become an international symbol of spreading thoughts and feelings about peace

throughout the country and the world!

Commemorating International Day of Peace, the First Graders participated in a peace

celebration. The children gathered to pray for world peace and to observe a moment of

silence. Then they processed to the front of the churchyard carrying their colorful

pinwheels.

On School Street, the excited first graders stood beside a giant “Pinwheels for Peace” banner

and carried large peace signs for all the passers-by to see. While their pinwheels spun in the

wind, the students sang a peace song to spread the message of peace to the community.

Passers-by tooted horns, waved and smiled.

Having Fun in the 1st GradeMr. Marvin Macadangdang Room 103

“Imagine peace. Imagine a world where all creation is held in esteem

and our lives are like hymns to God.”

Vergilla Jim, OSF, Peace Begins with Me

Celebrate Peace

The celebration ended in

the Parish/School Hall with

a closing prayer

emphasizing that peace

begins with each and

everyone and reminding us

to go in peace and serve the

Lord.

Peace is something we all

yearn for. Spread the word.

May peace prevail on earth!

Superheroes tell stories!Ms. Kalahiki, Room 101 Grade 2

Over the fall break, the Superheroes were busy

reading their way through books and stories.

While reading, they were given a “SUPER” task.

That “SUPER” task consisted of recreating a scene from their

favorite book.

Many of the students chose to use a shoebox to recreate their

favorite scene while others created “WANTED” posters for the

villain of the story. Each superhero student shared their project

with the class and they all practiced their presentation and

communication skills.

What's the buzz in 2nd Grade?

Ms. Manipon // Room 104

This past 1st quarter, Room 104 has been involved in many

activities. The students participated in the Hawaii Aquatics

Swim and Safety program. They learned Growth Mindset and

that they can always do and be better. They celebrated the Spirit of St. Theresa

week where they did their first service learning project. They cleaned around

the church while also taking statistics on what items they had found and

reflected on why they should keep the earth clean. During that same week, the

students did many other activities such as attending the blessing of the animals

and staying healthy with a Zumba work out. The students enthusiastically

performed a song and dance for the grandparents called "The Kau Kau

Song." This song was about the foods from diverse cultures. The students also

had fun creating; from making collages to water color painting. They have

many ways to express themselves here in the classroom! They just finished up

their Reading Project and they had the choice of either doing a mobile, shoebox

scene, a commercial, a book jacket, or a WANTED poster of a villain in the

story. Lastly, the students enjoyed learning about fire safety, firefighters, and

getting to see a fire truck up close. They are looking forward to new projects

and learning new concepts in all their subjects!

3rd Grade News!!Mrs. Sayapheth Room 201

This years 3rd grade has had such an amazing start of the

year! Some of our favorite things we did so far are Spirit

Week, swim class, praying the rosary and learning about

money! We're looking forward to the rest of the year!

Our favorite activity for Spirit Week was

our service learning project making DIY

t-shirt tug toys for the foster dogs of Paws of

Hawaii. We even got to meet some of the dogs

at the Blessing of the Animals. We enjoyed

crafting and being able to help those in need.

We started our 5 week swim program where

we are learning water safety and different

swim techniques. We love walking to the

Palama Settlement and spending time in the

water during the school day.

We also really enjoyed reciting the rosary

daily during the month of October. It helped

us to really understand how to pray the rosary.

We especially loved having Mother Mary

visit our class for the day.

We spent a lot of time learning about money. We

learned how to count, add, subtract, and make

change. We got to use real coins to learn how to

count using the most coins, the least coins, and

to find the most creative way to count.

4th Grade News!!Mrs. Alcala Homeroom 203

The first quarter was an exciting one for our class.

We got to know each other and learn our backgrounds by

creating “Family Trees” and learned how all of our family

trees lead back to Adam and Eve. We started to work on our

public speaking skills by doing a variety of presentations, for

example, Saint of the Month. In Science we had a few

Airforce Weathermen come and teach our class about their

job. We learned about weather, climate, and different clouds.

Swimming class was initiated during this quarter as well. It’s

been a fun quarter and can’t wait to see what is to come for

the rest of the year.

Taking A Journey With 5th Grade!

Mr. Agtarap

Aloha! The fifth graders

have been on quite a journey

since the beginning of the

school year. They started

their 5th grade journey with

their teacher, Mr. John

Mussack, and learned many

things throughout this

quarter.

In Social Studies, they

went over the Ice Age and

the Indians. In Math, the

students learned about

multiplying decimals, and

multi-digit multiplication.

In Religion, they started

looking into the Creed.

In Science this year, the fifth

graders are diving into a new

text book called Exploring

Science and learned about

plant life.

In Language Arts and

Writing, the students wrote

many summaries on different

topics.

After Mr. Mussack’s

departure from the school at

the end of the 1st quarter, Mr.

Shaun Agtarap will continue

the rest of the year as the grade

5 teacher. Mr. Agtarap was

formerly our school’s 6th & 7th

grade Religion & Middle

School Technology teacher.

New Kids on the BlockSr. Ana De La Cruz, SPC

Homeroom 107 Grade 6

Welcome, to homeroom 107! We are the

home to half of our 6th grade class. We are

off to an exciting 1st quarter of the school year with

our homeroom teacher, Sr. Ana De La Cruz.

This 1st quarter is filled with new academic

adventures and challenges. We are faced with new

teachers and lots of homework.

Our greatest joy this quarter was to pray and

participate in our Global Rosary Relay. In honor of

the month of October, we prayed the Holy Rosary

each day. We offer a rosary for all our families and

friends. We pray that our Blessed Mother Mary will

guide us as we continue to learn.

Sensational in 6th Grade!!Mr. Bankston – Homeroom 209

Greetings from Homeroom 209! We have had a

busy year so far. In tech we started learning the

Python programming language using a program

called Code Combat, we started working on

increasing our typing skills using a program

called Mavis Beacon Keyboarding Kidz. The

class worked on a Service Learning Project and

helped to create a garden on campus.

7th GradeHomeroom 108 are Eager Beavers

Mrs. Sally Mejia

Welcome and Aloha to School Year 2018-2019!

The 7th grade students in

homeroom 108 started a “Totally

Awesome Math Class” this year.

They always look forward to pop

quizzes because it is time for a

popcorn toast!

On All Saints Day, the students did

a presentation to our amazing

preschoolers about the life of Saint

Therese of Lisieux, our beloved

patroness.

Before the end of the first quarter, our middle school students

prepared for the groundbreaking of the STS Peace Garden. They started with an

opening prayer asking for God’s blessings to guide them in the school wide

Project Based Learning (PBL) curriculum.

7th Grade"The Right and Shining Way

Ms. Mestanova Room208

"Dear Mary, won't You show us, the right and shining way?

We pledge our love and offering, a Rosary each day"!

What a wonderful month of prayer it was for the seventh grade

students as they led this month's Block Rosary Prayer and

welcomed our Blessed Mother to each classroom. Students were

able to understand the deeper meaning of our prayer life and the

Block Rosary as it has proven to be a living apostolate for the

return of the wonder. Through the Block Rosary we as a class hope

to build and strengthen the “little church” in our hearts, in our

classroom, and in our community.

Pray for us dear mother of GOD!

8th GradeScience News!!

Mrs, Mafua Homeroom 205

6th Grade Earth Science:

The 6th grade has been hard at work kicking of the start of

our garden project. They have been testing the soil in our

garden to find out the composition of the soil.

7th Grade Life Science:

The 7th grade has also been hard at work

testing the soil in our garden. They’re

objective was not only to find out the

composition of our soil but to also do

research on the different types of plants

and vegetables that will be able to grow

well in our garden.

8th Grade Physical Science:

The 8th grade had a different project

from the garden. They did a case

study on the Minneapolis Bridge

Failure in 2007.

They learned about the different

types of bridges and was able to

design and build a bridge with

popsicle stick. The criteria for the

bridges were aesthetics and

strength. The bridges needed to be

able to hold at least 10 lbs. for a

minute.

The Shooting StarsMs. Faith Leasiolagi

Homeroom 207

Homeroom 207 is the on-campus home to half of the 8th grade class and

is the center of learning for English Language Arts here at St. Theresa

middle school.

In Homeroom 207, students follow a Code of Conduct that encourages

them to do their best each and every day and it allows for student

discipline when needed.

Students are assigned responsibilities school wide and within our

classroom. These responsibilities enable our students to foster their real

life skills.

Student behavior is not only monitored in class but online as well using

our Class Dojo website. Our dojo keeps a record of individual student

behavior.

This school year, there is a hope and a constant prayer for God's

guidance for each 8th grade student, that they may be continuously

conscious of their actions and behavior as they model their very best as

an example to the whole school. It is my daily prayer that our 8th grade

students become a true shooting star for the younger students to see and

follow.

Look out for the next issue of our Beaver Bulletin for "Keeping Up

With ELA" to find out more about our English Language Arts

curriculum!
