Happy Thanksgiving November 25, 2010

Thanksgiving Mass is at a special time: 9:00 a.m.

Friday, Nov. 26 there will be one Mass at 8:30 a.m. The parish center will be closed Thursday and Friday.

Christ the King

Today is the Thirty-fourth or Last Sunday in Ordinary Time. Its official name is the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. This solemnity was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925, an observance celebrating an aspect of Jesus’ identity rather than of his life. Conventional understandings of kingship and power are transformed. Rather than calling up images of Jesus Christ dressed in kingly robes, the Gospel proclaims him as king by the sign over his head on the throne of a wooden cross (I.N.R.I.: –IESUS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM–Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). Paradoxically, it is the thief who recognized in Christ the Lord and Messiah.

FIRST READING: All the tribes of Israel gather to acclaim and anoint David, a member of the tribe of Judah, as king of Israel. The anointing of David symbolizes God’s sovereignty over his people and foreshadows the future king to be born of David’s lineage as the redeemer of the world.

RESPONSORIAL: As the Church recalls the anointing of David as king, she proclaims Psalm 121 and rejoices in her own call to ascend the Lord’s mountain and to worship Christ, the King.

SECOND READING: Paul announces the tremendous gift of our place in the kingdom. Both created and redeemed in Christ, we are rescued from darkness and inherit the light of the kingdom. Through the gift of reconciliation won for us on the cross, we will share in the fellowship of the saints.

GOSPEL: The thief’s plea for mercy and a place in the kingdom somehow rises above the mockery of the crowd, penetrating the mind and heart of Christ and the minds and hearts of sinners down throughout the ages. It is profound irony that it is in dying that Jesus saves himself, for in so doing he raises his body, his sisters and brothers, to the fullness of life.

From the Pastor’s Desk…

Dear Parishioners,

Thanksgiving Day is almost upon us! It’s amazing how quickly another year passes. The wonderful thing about Thanksgiving Day is that it can act as a kind of “speed bump” in our very busy lives. It forces us to slow down and notice what’s going on around us and what we might easily take for granted – how blessed we really are. As pastor, I am always amazed at the priests, deacons, staff members and volunteers who give of their time and talents, day after day and week after week, to make our parish flourish. This Thanksgiving Day, as pastor, I will have much for which to give thanks and praise to God. I want to invite you to stop and notice your blessings – the gifts of life, faith and each other. Even in the midst of problems and difficult times, noticing your blessings can bring a healthy balance to your life. So I invite you to plan to join me and other members of this wonderful parish, as we give thanks to God this Thanksgiving morning at 9:00 a.m. in our church. In the Lord,

Father Charles Pastor

Please note this is a restricted fund solely for this purpose and therefore will not be assessed by the Archdiocese. Our next collection will be held December 5, 2010. We thank you for your generosity and commitment to this emergent need. PLANNED GIVING
