TRANSCRIPT

He was a Roman Priest at a time when emperor Claudias the second persecuted Christians. He also had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people.

This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to their families if they died.

Moreover, polygamy was commonplace at that time but Christians encouraged marriage between one man and one woman as it was considered a sacred union.

Valentine secretly married young couples and was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against Claudias’ edict.

His jailer, a man called Asterius, had a daughter who was blind. While in prison, Valentine prayed and healed the young girl and Asterius became Christian as a result."

In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution: beating, stoning, and finally decapitation all because he encouraged and performed Christian marriage.

The story goes that the last words he wrote before he was executed were in a note to Asterius' daughter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").

Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

The earliest surviving valentines in English appear to be those written in 1477 by Margery Brewes to her future husband John Paston "my right well-beloved Valentine".

Valentine's Day is mentioned by Ophelia in Hamlet (1600–1601):

To-morrow is Saint Valentine's day,All in the morning betime,

And I a maid at your window,To be your Valentine.

William Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act IV, Scene 5

The modern cliché can be found in a collection of English nursery rhymes (1784). The modern version is as follows:

“Roses are red, violets are blueSugar is sweet and so are

you.”

Nowadays, people send valentine’s cards to their love ones but also to family and friends. The cards, however, are not usually signed.
