SAINTS-PATRIOTS SPECIFICS

Page 3: SAINTS LOOK TO BUILD ON HALL OF FAME GAME WIN WITH ......Oct. 28 @ Denver Broncos 7:20/NBC Nov. 5 PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 7:30/ESPN Nov. 11 ATLANTA FALCONS Noon/FOX Nov. 18 @ Oakland Raiders

QUARTERBACKS (4) - Returners: Drew Brees, Sean

Canfield, Chase Daniel. Offseason veteran addition:

Luke McCown (FA). WORTH NOTING: Drew Brees

had a record-breaking season in 2011 on his way to

being named the Associated Press Offensive Player of

the Year. He set new NFL records for completions

(468), completion percentage (71.2%) and most pass-

ing yards in a single season (5,476), a 27-year old mark

previously set by Pro Football Hall of Fame signal-caller

Dan Marino. Brees was selected to the Pro Bowl for the

sixth time in his career, his fifth as a Saint. Chase Daniel

enters his fourth year with the team. He’s appeared in

29 games and will serve as Brees’ backup and as the

team’s holder on extra point and field goal attempts.

Both Brees and Daniel enjoyed impressive 2012 debuts

in the Hall of Fame Game. Canfield returns to the team

for his third season after originally being selected by the

Saints in the seventh round of the NFL Draft in 2010.

Luke McCown is a nine-year veteran in the NFL and

signed with the team in the offseason after spending

2011 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he started

two games. He will compete to earn a roster spot in

training camp.

RUNNING BACKS (8) - Returners: FB Jed Collins, FB

Korey Hall, RB Mark Ingram, RB Chris Ivory, RB Darren

Sproles, RB Pierre Thomas. Draft choices/Rookie

free agents: RB Joe Banyard (FA), RB Travaris Cadet

(FA). Departures from 2011: RB Chris Taylor. WORTH

NOTING:The Saints rushing attack finished the 2011

season ranked sixth overall in the NFL in total rushing

yards (2,127). The rushing attack was led by five-year

veteran Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles, one of the

NFL’s top free agent acquisitions in 2011. Thomas, who

recorded 110 carries for 562 yards and five touchdowns

was joined by newcomer Sproles who broke the NFL

single season mark for most all-purpose yards recorded

in a season (2,696). Ingram contributed to the high

powered offense in his first year after being drafted in

the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He missed part of

the season with an injury but looks to come back strong

in 2012. Ivory also contributed to a top notch rushing

attack. In his third year with the Saints, he was able to

record an average of 4.7 yards per carry while returning

from foot surgery in the 2011 offseason to see exten-

sive action in a talented backfield. In the offseason, the

Saints signed two undrafted free agents, Banyard and

Cadet. Both hope to earn spots on the roster in a very

deep halfback group, as Cadet shined in the Hall of

Fame Game with eight receptions for 80 yards. Former

college linebacker turned fullback Jed Collins won the

starting role in last year’s training camp and helped lead

the way for a dominant rushing attack.

WIDE RECEIVERS (10) - Returners: Adrian Arrington,

Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, Joseph Morgan,

Lance Moore, Courtney Roby, Andy Tanner. Draft

choices/Undrafted rookies: Nick Toon (D-4), Marques

Clark (FA), Derek Moye (WAI-MIA). Departures from

2011: Robert Meachem. WORTH NOTING:A very tal-

ented group of wideouts helped the offense put up the

most prolific offensive output in league history in 2011.

The group is led by six-year veteran Colston. He

recorded 80 receptions for 1,143 yards (14.3 avg.) with

eight TDs despite missing two games. His 48 career

touchdown receptions rank sixth in the NFL since 2006

and are tied for second in franchise history. Moore re-

turns for his eighth year with the team after registering

52 catches for 627 yards and eight TDs in 2011. Vet-

eran speedster Henderson also had a stellar perform-

ance in 2011, averaging 15.7 yards per reception.

Arrington, Morgan and Toon will compete for an open

spot in the club’s multiple receiver sets left open fol-

lowing the offseason departure of Meachem to San

Diego. Fourth round draft pick Toon’s size and agility

will help create a mismatch against opposing defenses

as he also competes for playing time. Expect Moye, an

undrafted rookies who enjoyed a productive college ca-

reer, to compete for a spot based on special teams.

TIGHT ENDS (5) - Returners: Jimmy Graham, Michael

Higgins, David Thomas. Offseason veteran addition:

Derek Schouman (FA). Draft choices/Undrafted rook-

ies: Jake Byrne (FA). Departures from 2011: John

Gilmore, Tory Humphrey. WORTH NOTING: Graham

is one of the most explosive cogs in the Saints’ high

powered passing attack as he became the first tight end

in franchise history to post more than 1,000 receiving

yards in a season. The former college basketball player

from the University of Miami (Fla.) was selected to the

Pro Bowl in just his sophomore season based on his

dominating performance of 1,310 yards and 11 touch-

downs on 99 receptions in 2011, with his receiving

yardage total ranking second all-time for a tight end in

NFL record books. Thomas returns after missing most

of 2011 due to concussion symptoms. In 2010 he

recorded 30 receptions for 219 yards and two TDs

while being a key blocker up front. Both Higgins and

Thomas are large, physical players who will be great

components for the team’s emphasis on blocking and

the running game.

OFFENSIVE LINE (16) - Returners: T Charles Brown,

T Jermon Bushrod, C Brian de la Puente, G Jahri

Evans, G Eric Olsen, T Zach Strief, C/G Matt Tennant,

T Fenuki Tupou. Offseason veteran additions: T

Hutch Eckerson (FA), G Ben Grubbs (UFA-Bal.). Draft

choices/Undrafted rookies: G Andrew Tiller (D-6), T

Marcel Jones (D-7), C Brian Folkerts (FA), G DeOn’tae

Pannell (FA), T Aderious Simmons (FA), T Scott Win-

newisser (FA). Departures from 2011: Carl Nicks.

WORTH NOTING: The Saints return four of five

starters on the offensive line, a unit that proved to be

one of the NFL’s most dominant in 2011. The Saints set

the NFL record in net yards per game (467.1) and

ranked second in the league in fewest sacks allowed

(24 sacks). They also ranked first in total passing yards

on the season (5,347), sixth in total rushing yards

(2,127), and finished second in total points scored on

the season (547). Three members were named to 2012

Pro Bowl (Evans, Nicks, & Bushrod). The unit was

awarded the Madden Protectors Award, the league's

top honor for the best offensive line group. Two mem-

bers of the starting unit spent their first year in that role

and are looking forward to contributing with more ex-

perience in 2012. This year's starting line has over 26

years experience between the five starters.

DEFENSIVE LINE (14) - Returners: DT Sedrick Ellis,

DE Junior Galette, DT Tom Johnson, DE Cameron Jor-

dan, DE Turk McBride, DT Swanson Miller, DE Will

Smith. Offseason veteran additions: DT Remi Ayo-

dele (FA), DT Brodrick Bunkley (UFA-Den.), DT Alex

Daniels (FA). Draft choices/Rookie free agents: DT

Akiem Hicks (D-3), DE Braylon Broughton (FA), DE

Donavan Robinson (FA), DL Tyrunn Walker (FA). De-

partures from 2011: DE Jeff Charleston, DT Mitch

King, DT Aubrayo Franklin, DT Shaun Rogers. WORTH

NOTING:A fifth-year defensive team captain and eight-

year veteran Will Smith, with his career totals of 541

tackles and 67.5 sacks which ranks fourth in club record

books, remains the leader of this year's revamped de-

fensive line, which has seen significant changes on the

interior. One of the club’s most productive defensive

players in franchise history, expect him to be a thorn in

the opposing offense's passing schemes with his pass

rushing ability. Joining Smith up front will be Sedrick

Ellis in his fourth year, who has started every game

he's appeared in since 2007, giving the team a consis-

tent upfront physical player to go with Smith. In his

sophmore year, Cameron Jordan is expected to be a

great help up front, playing opposite Smith at left de-

fensive end. New addition Brodrick Bunkley, an offsea-

son unrestricted free agent acquisition from the Denver

Broncos, is expected to be a key run stopper in the mid-

dle of the New Orleans interior line with his impressive

combination of size and strength. Turk McBride with his

impressive speed, size and strength should be a great

asset for locking up opposing offensive tackles and

rushing the passer. Junior Galette served as a solid ro-

tational pass rusher with 4.5 quarterback takedowns in

2011 and will audition for a more extensive role for the

2012 season. Ayodele returns to New Orleans in 2012

after a one season stint in Minnesota. The 6-2, 318

pound interior run stuffer was the Saints’ starting nose

tackle on their 2009 Super Bowl XLIV championship

squad. Daniels posseses the versatility to play both de-

fensive end and defensive tackle. Hicks was the club’s

third round draft pick in 2011. After spending his final

two college seasons at Regina (Sask.), he’s expected

to compete for a spot on New Orleans’ interior defen-

sive line rotation as a rookie. Bothered by a hand injury

in the first week of camp, Hicks is now healthy and able

to practice fully. Broughton, Robinson and Walker are

defensive linemen who all all enjoyed productive col-

lege careers and will compete in training camp on both

defense and special teams for roster spots.

LINEBACKERS (12) - Returners: Nate Bussey, Ezra

Butler, Jonathan Casillas, Will Herring, Scott Shanle,

Martez Wilson. Offseason veteran additions: Chris

Chamberlain (UFA-StL), David Hawthorne (UFA-Sea.),

Curtis Lofton (UFA-Atl.), Lawrence Wilson (FA). Draft

choices/Undrafted rookies: Kadarron Anderson (FA),

Aaron Tevis (FA). Departures from 2011: Jo-Lonn

Dunbar, Jeremiha Hunter, Ramon Humber. WORTH

NOTING:Leading the Saints linebacker corps once

again will be veteran mainstay Scott Shanle along with

recent unrestricted free agent additions Curtis Lofton,

Chris Chamberlain and David Hawthorne. No Saint has

posted as many tackles since 2006 as Shanle’s 646

stops, who is expected to assume the strongside posi-

tion in 2012. Lofton, Chamberlain and Hawthorne all

had 100-plus tackle performances last season with At-

lanta, St. Louis and Seattle respectively. Chamberlain

comes over to compete on the outside from the Rams,

where he played under current Saints defensive coor-

dinator Steve Spagnuolo. Hawthorne, a former un-

drafted free agent, has extensive experience on both

the inside and outside where he was Seattle’s top tack-

ler each of the past three seasons and has fit in at the

weakside position in training camp and the preseaosn

with New Orleans. With Saints fans familiar with the

middle linebacker Lofton from his four seasons with the

Falcons, the former Oklahoma standout finished with a

career-high 167 tackles in 2011, also filling up the stat

sheet with one sack, two interceptions, one returned for

a touchdown, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery

and seven pass defenses. (Continued on next page)

DEFENSE

Page 5: SAINTS LOOK TO BUILD ON HALL OF FAME GAME WIN WITH ......Oct. 28 @ Denver Broncos 7:20/NBC Nov. 5 PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 7:30/ESPN Nov. 11 ATLANTA FALCONS Noon/FOX Nov. 18 @ Oakland Raiders

(Continued from previous page) Martez Wilson’s a

tall and rangy player built for rushing the passer, who

has also seen extensive time this offseason and pre-

season as a down lineman. In his 2012 debut in the Hall

of Fame game he recorded 1.5 sacks to lead the team

playing off the edge. With the versatility to play on the

line or at linebacker, he should be effective in the new

defensive scheme in addition to being a solid contribu-

tor on special teams. Wilson made a key play in New

Orleans’ preseason opener where his fourth quarter in-

terception at the New Orleans one-yard line sealed a

17-10 Saints victory. Expect rookies Kadarron Ander-

son and Aaron Tevis to be solid performers on the spe-

cial teams units.

DEFENSIVE BACKS (17) - Returners: S Isa Abdul-

Quddus, S Jonathon Amaya, CB Jabari Greer, S

Roman Harper, S Malcolm Jenkins, CB Kamaal McIl-

wain, CB Johnny Patrick, CB Patrick Robinson. Off-

season veteran additions: CB Marquis Johnson (FA),

CB Elbert Mack (FA), CB Cord Parks (FA). Draft

choices/Undrafted rookies: CB Corey White (D-5),

CB A.J. Davis (FA), S Jose Gumbs (FA), S Jerico Nel-

son, CB Laron Scott, S Johnny Thomas. Departures

from 2011: CB Tracy Porter, CB Leigh Torrence.

WORTH NOTING:A youthful cornerback group is ex-

pected to be led by eight-year veteran Jabari Greer,

who started all 16 games last year, while recording 71

tackles, ranked fourth on the team. Patrick Robinson in

just his third season is expected to be a starter after

leading the Saints with four interceptions in 2011.

Johnny Patrick in his second season will be competing

for playing time at the nickel position with several rook-

ies and veterans. Both Marquis Johnson and Elbert

Mack are expected to see playing time at the position in

the preseason as well. Corey White's solid defensive

and special team skills should help him in his rookie

NFL season as he attempts to secure a roster spot

coming out of Samford University. Johnson, Mack and

White all saw extensive action in the club’s preseason

opener with Greer and Robinson sidelined by injuries.

At the safety position, one of the league's most consis-

tent performers Roman Harper is the only Saints safety

to have been selected to two Pro Bowls. Harper’s six

years of leadership experience allowed him to lead the

team with 7.5 sacks, the second-highest quarterback

takedown total by an NFL defensive back since they be-

came an official statistic in 1982. Jenkins had an im-

pressive 77 tackles in 2011 and is expected to have a

breakout campaign in his fourth season in the club’s

new defensive scheme, third as a safety. He got off to

an impressive start with a first quarter interception in

the Hall of Fame Game. Isa Abdul-Quddus will look to

continue his impressive special teams performance

when in 2011 he was one of the top tacklers in just his

rookie season. Undrafted rookie free agent defensive

backs in CB A.J. Davis, S Jose Gumbs, S Jerico Nel-

son, CB Laron Scott and S Johnny Thomas will all look

to impress the coaching staff both defensively and on

special teams as they engage in a stiff competition for

spots on the club’s final 53-man roster or on the prac-

tice squad.

SPECIALISTS (4) - Returners: LS Justin Drescher, K

Garrett Hartley, K John Kasay, P Thomas Morstead.

Offseason veteran additions: None. Draft

choices/Rookie free agents: None. Departures from
