With a large population of international students from more than 100 countries around the world, Monash University truly has a multicultural learning environment that will offer you a remarkable educational and personal experience .

Although academic success will be your first priority at university, you will also have many opportunities to enrich the quality of your education . These opportunities may include the chance to develop your knowledge and understanding of new cultures as well as sharing your own culture with others .

At Monash, we understand that Muslim students have specific social, religious and cultural needs . Consequently, Salaam Monash is published as a resource handbook for new Muslim students in Victoria . This handbook will assist you with the process of settling and adjusting to life in Australia . In addition, the staff at Monash Connect are always available to provide information or assistance .

I would like to take this opportunity to offer you my best wishes for success and a rich and rewarding experience during your time at Monash .

Professor Stephanie Fahey Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) Monash University

Welcome to Monash University

Australia is a diverse, multicultural, multireligious society . Our population includes Indigenous Australians – the traditional owners and caretakers of the land, the descendants of convicts and settlers who arrived on our shores with European settlement and a wide array of new migrants from around the globe . Because of this diversity, it is very difficult to precisely define what constitutes ‘Australian culture’ . However, the following may be useful for new visitors .

Greetings and languageThe quintessential Australian greeting is’g’day mate’ but ‘hi’ and ‘hello’ are common . Whilst English is the most commonly spoken language, Australian English is a distinct dialect that has some variation from region to region .

Australian slang www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html

Use of informal nicknames is common and can include the shortening of names (‘Johnno’ instead of ‘Johnathon’) . It is also relatively common for people to use each others’ first-names, particularly if they are of the same age or are young adults . If in doubt, feel free to use someone’s title with their last name, eg . ‘Mr Smith’ or ‘Professor Jones’ but don’t be surprised if you are informed that you can use their first name . Women were traditionally given ‘Miss’ if unmarried and ‘Mrs’ if married . But ‘Ms’ (pronounced ‘mizz’) for either is now common and useful if you are unaware what the person prefers to be called .

Some people shake hands to greet each other, regardless of gender . This is more common in a business setting . Sometimes people kiss each other once on the cheek or give a brief hug for greetings and goodbyes .

Australians will generally find it awkward and impolite to be refused a handshake, which can present some difficulties for Muslims who follow stricter interpretations of touching proscriptions based on gender .

SocialisingAustralians enjoy informal socialising, and will host social functions such as dinners, barbeques or parties . Sometimes it can be ‘BYO’ which means bring your own drinks or meat for a barbeque or ‘bring a plate’ where each guest brings a plate with food to share with others .

Although some Australians are vegetarians and vegans, and others belong to religious minorities that observe dietary restrictions, most Australians do not . Some may be uninformed about the dietary requirements of Muslims . If you have been invited to someone’s house to eat, it is a good idea to gently forewarn your host with the halal requirements you observe and/or offer to bring something to eat and share . Vegetarian options are usually available at restaurants, but be aware that these may sometimes contain alcohol .

Drinking alcohol is common among Australian adults, including in homes, at ‘pubs’ and bars, as well as with dinner at restaurants and informal drinks at work, such as after hours at the end of the week . It may help to decide ahead of time the level of comfort you have with being in the presence of alcohol-consumption, to help decide the types of events you wish to attend or decline .

ClothingThe types of clothing that people wear reflect the diversity in Australian society, the social situation and variations in the weather . There are no laws or rules on clothing .

Monash respects different cultures and styles of dress . Students generally wear casual clothing on campus . It is common for male and female students to wear jeans, t-shirts and jumpers . In the summer, students dress for comfort and can be seen in dresses, skirts, singlet tops and shorts .

Australians are expected to wear certain clothing styles in work situations . Most workplaces have dress standards but this varies on the type and location of the work undertaken . Outside the work situation, clothing style is a personal choice .

Discussing religion and politicsAustralians are relatively comfortable discussing politics, but may be more reticent to bring up religious topics, although non-Muslims can be curious about Islam and Muslims if they have not previously had the opportunity to get to know a Muslim . If they perceive a Muslim is open to being questioned they may use the opportunity to clarify questions and concerns .

Australia has no official state religion and people are free to practise any religion they choose, as long they obey the law . Australia is a predominantly Christian country, with around 64 per cent of all Australians identifying as Christians . However, most other major religious faiths are also practised, reflecting Australia’s culturally diverse society .

Australians are also free not to have a religion . Nearly 20% of Australians indicated on the most recent census that they have ‘no religion’ (this includes atheists and agnostics) .

www.dfat.gov.au/facts/religion.html

Gender relationsAustralia practices little gender segregation in comparison to many Muslim countries . As mentioned previously, men and women shake hands and there is no sexual inference in this type of mild touching .

Australian values and laws affirm gender equality, although this may vary with sexism still a reality in some environments, such as with the gender pay gap that has persisted despite ‘equal pay for equal work’ legislation . Nevertheless, the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, marital status, pregnancy or potential pregnancy in a range of areas of public activity, including work, accommodation, education, the provision of goods, facilities and services, the activities of clubs and the administration of Commonwealth laws and programs” .[1]

[1] Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department website www .ema .gov .au/www/agd/agd .nsf/Page/Humanrightsandanti-discrimination_Sexdiscrimination

Equal opportunity Australians believe in equal opportunity . In Australia there are laws that protect people from discrimination based on:

n race, colour, national or ethnic origin, nationality

n sex or gender, lawful sexual activity, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy or

n potential pregnancy, breastfeeding, status as a parent or carer

n religious or political belief or activity, industrial activity

n age, physical features, disability (past, present or imputed), medical record, or

n personal association with someone identified by reference to any of the above .

Sexual harassment is a form of unlawful discrimination and is against the law . It is any conduct of a sexual nature, which is unwelcome and in the circumstances is likely to cause someone to feel offended, humiliated or intimidated .

Page 7: Salaam Monash

5

In Victoria, racial and religious vilification is also unlawful . Vilification is defined as a conduct that incites hatred against, serious contempt for, or revulsion or severe ridicule of another person or class of person on the grounds of their race or religion .

In Australia, there are both government and private schools . Government schools throughout Australia provide quality education for everyone in the local region, irrespective of their means, religion or background .

Although government schools are free to Australian citizens, fees are charged for children of international students . If you have a sponsorship or scholarship from the Australian Government (eg the AusAID or IPRS) you will not have to pay school fees for your children at government schools . Private schools charge all students fees regardless of their citizenship status .

Halal food products in AustraliaMany grocery items available in Melbourne shops and supermarkets are halal . The best way to check if processed food is halal is to see if it is certified by the Halal Certification Authority-Australia .

It can be useful to look at the labels of food products . The ingredients and food additives are usually listed on the label . Sometimes

additives are represented by a number . A description of these additives can be found on the following websites .
