Directions to the test station:From the North: On Hwy. 67 at the north edge of Macomb, just be-fore you get to the city, turn right (west) onto Tower Road at the sign that points the direction to the WIU farm. Sale TermsTerms of sale are cash. CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE PAYABLE TO THE LOWDERMAN AUCTION SERVICE. All bulls must be paid for at the sale and before loading. All bulls are the buyer’s risk as soon as sold. Announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed material in this catalog.

ContractThe previous terms and guarantee shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller.

LoadingBulls will be available to load out at the conclusion of the sale. Arrangements may be made to pick up the bull at a later date by contacting the station staff. Bulls will be housed and cared for by WIU bull test for up to 48 hours after the sale without additional charge.

InsuranceInsurance may be obtained from representatives at the sale.

Health All bulls were tested for brucellosis within 30 days of the sale. Additional health papers, acceptable in any state, will be furnished at the expense of the buyer. All bulls met the health requirements established by the test veterinarian, test advisory committee, and test coordinator before coming on test and their dams tested free of Johnes. All bulls were tested negative for persistently infected (PI) BVD.

Breeding GuaranteeAll animals sold are guaranteed by the seller to be breeders. Bulls are guaranteed as long as they are properly cared for. Any bull that settles at least one-third of healthy cows he breeds will be considered a breeder. Should any bull not prove to be a satisfactory breeder within one year of the sale, the seller reserves the right, for a period of six months, to prove the bull a satisfactory breeder. Should the bull fail to prove a satisfactory breeder in the specified time period, the seller will refund the full settlement in satisfaction of all claims. Complaints must be reported in writing to the seller within one year of sale.

Registry and TransferRegistration papers will be transferred to the buyer at the seller’s expense.

Bull Test Operation & Data CollectedFACILITIES: The bulls were housed in straw and stalk bedded 28’ x 80’ pens with a 28’ x 28’ shelter open to the south with a maximum of 13 bulls per pen.

TESTING PERIOD: The bulls began their 112-day test on Octo-ber 19, 2017 after a 21-day adjustment period and came off of test on February 8, 2018.

RATION: Bulls were fed a complete pellet with a NEg of 0.503 Mcal/lb and 13% CP. The ration consisted of 73% highly digest-ible fiber sources (wheat middlings, soyhulls, and cottonseed hulls), 22% corn, and a vitamin-mineral premix with rumensin. Please note this is a significant change from past years and was developed by VitaPlus and Dr. Keela Trennepohl.

ON/OFF TEST WEIGHTS: Weights are the average of two consec-utive weights taken at the beginning and end of the bull test.

ADG: Average Daily Gain over the entire test period.

WDA: Weight per Day of Age epress in lbs. of daily weight gain over the animals lifetime.

INDEXES: Calculated as 70% ADG + 15% REA + 15% IMF. An overall index across all breeds was calculated to compare their performance across breeds. A within breed index was calculated as well.

FRAME SCORE: Based on hip height and age at hip height measurement using the BIF guidelines.

SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE: Measured in centimeters and adjusted using BIF guidelines. This trait is correlated to the bull’s semen producing ability as well as the fertility and age of puberty of his offspring.

RUMP FAT & BACK FAT: Fat thickness in inches at the rump and between the 12th and 13th ribs measured using real-time ultrasound and adjusted using breed association and BIF guidelines. Note that some breeds do not report rump fat.

RIBEYE AREA: Ribeye area in square inches between the 12th and 13th ribs measured using real-time ultrasound and adjusted using breed association and BIF guidelines. Ratios expressed as within breed ratios.

MARBLING: Marbling score estimated using real-time ul-trasound and adjusted using breed association guidelines. Adjusted percent intramuscular fat is converted to a potential quality grade using BIF guidelines. Ratios expressed as with-in breed ratios.

GENETIC DEFECTS: All bulls in the sale are free of known genetic defects at the time of test registration, excluding the Developmental Duplication (DD) and Oculocutaneous Hy-popigmentation (OH) conditions.

Production E PDsCE/CED — Calving Ease Direct predicts the average differ-ence in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease.

BW/Brth — Birth weight expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny com-pared to that of other sires.

WW — Weaning Weight expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

YW — Yearling Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predic-tor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his proge-ny compared to that of other sires.

SC — Scrotal Circumference EPD expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scro-tal size compared to that of other sires.

Maternal E PDs Milk — Maternal Milk — A predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires.

Carcass E PDs Fat/BF — Fat Thickness expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marb — Marbling expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to proge-ny of other sires.

RE/REA — Ribeye Area EPD expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Indicies SimmentalAPI — All Purpose Index Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daugh-ters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TI — Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. Evaluates sires for use on mature cows with all offspring put on feed and sold under grade and yield.

Red AngusGM — Grid Master — An index considering Red Angus bulls mated to cows and all progeny sold on a quality-based grid. Expressed in differences in profitability/exposure.

HB — Herd Builder — An index considering Red Angus bulls mated to cows and heifers where heifers will be retained from the herd for replacement and all remaining progeny will be sold on a quality-based carcass grid. Expressed in differ-ences in profitability per exposure.

Angus$W — Weaned Calf Value — An index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.

$B — Beef Value — An index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

CharolaisTSI — Combines BWT, WWT, YWT, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT EPDS into one single value on which to base selection decisions. The TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data. It represents a dollar index per terminal progeny produced for a bull, ranking them on potential profit.

Ken Nimrick Scholarship EndowmentKen Nimrick was with the WIU School of Agriculture from 1998 - 2012 and managed the WIU Bull Test from 2003 - 2012. He was known for his positive attitude, strong work ethic, leader-ship, and ability to interact with students. If you had the pleasure of learning or working with him, you understand the profound impact he made. Following his passing in 2016, the School of Agriculture and the Nimrick family established a scholarship in his honor.
