MUSIC IN THE PARK To host Roe Family Singers
August 27
The Roe Family Singers will appear
in concert at the gazebo in the park
area of Salem Lutheran Church on
Sunday, August 27, at 5pm.
The two-hour concert
will feature the good-time,
old-time hillbilly band from the
community at the headwaters
of the Mississippi River,
Kirkwood Hollow, MN.
The group is led by wife & husband,
Kim Roe (Best Female Vocalist, City
Pages / Village Voice) and Quillan Roe
(Accident Clearinghouse).
The band is known for its blends
of characteristic old-time sound with
rock & roll urgency and influence.
Joined by as many as seven musicians,
and featuring banjo, autoharp, guitar,
and washboard, the band and
family of fans have been regularly filling
the Minneapolis 331 Club every
Monday night since 2005.
In 2010 the band opened for both
Doc Watson and Del McCoury, each
playing at the Cedar Cultural Center;
the Grascals at the MBOTMA Winter
Bluegrass Weekend; and Jim Kweskin
and Geoff Muldaur at the National Jug
Band Jubilee in Louisville, KY.
In 2011 the group was awarded the
prestigious McKnight Fellowship
for Performing Musicians,
and has previously won the title of
World’s Best at the 20th annual
Battle of the Jug Bands.
With a mix of original music and
contemporary takes on old-time,
traditional, and gospel tunes,
every performance raises a ruckus.
Bring lawn chairs, blankets and
a picnic lunch to enjoy this concert.
Popcorn and lemonade will be
available. In case of rain, the concert
will take place inside the church.
The last concert in the
Music in the Park series will be the
Grand Rapids Area Male Chorus on
September 17. (indoors).

Message from Pastor Trish CALLED TOGETHER
Sometime during my high school years I sensed that God might be calling me into ministry…to be a pastor
specifically, but I had a few issues with this. First, I saw pastors as nearly perfect in every way and knew full
well the extent of my imperfections. Second, I had never met nor heard of any woman being a pastor and as
much as I claimed my inner ‘tomboy,’ I was still very much a girl. And third, it was required of pastors in the
Lutheran church that they learn Greek and Hebrew and my German high school teacher had made it blaringly
clear that second languages was not one of my strengths.
There were other reasons as well, too many to mention actually, and no matter how many reasons I tried to
put in God’s way to calling me to be an ordained pastor, God did not give up. This journey has not been easy
and when asked why or how I became a pastor my answer is always the same, “God!” God called, I answered
and ‘here I am.’
It is not surprising that we find one story after another in the Bible of others being called to do things they did
not believe they could do, or some like me, who simply did not want to do what God was calling them to do -
Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Noah, the Apostle Paul just to name a few. Whether we are insecure about our
abilities, following not just a dream but an unquenchable passion, or speaking God’s message of hope and
justice and love for all people, we can be sure that the journey will not be easy but we will never walk alone.
God is always with us.
All of God’s children are called to ministry in one way or another. Each of us has a passion for some aspect of
God’s work in our church, our communities and our world, and each of us is equipped by God to do the work
we are called to do. Our response is to answer, “Here I am,” and allow God to work with us, in us and
through us.
We are not perfect, we make
mistakes and we sometimes
struggle with one another and with the ways
God is calling us to be in ministry together,
but we have each other and the Holy Spirit
to guide us. And when asked why we do what
we do we can as I have done, blame God…
God has called us, we answered
and here we are.
In Christ’s love, Pastor Trish

Servant Leadership Council Meeting July 20, 2017 Unapproved Minutes
Present: Barb Anderson, Pastor Trish, Don Falls, Dave Trampe, Sara Felton, Jan Stadtherr, Dennis Zuelke, Beth Tobiason
1. The meeting was called to order at 4:30pm.
2. Pastor Trish led the opening prayer and the devotions based on Deuteronomy 8:17-18.
3. Motion: approve this meetings agenda: Anderson/Stadtherr/passed.
4. Ministry Team Highlights and concerns:
a. EMT - A suggestion has surfaced that starting on an agreed upon date all transactions involving money be confined to the
fellowship hall in an effort to ease congestion in the narthex and increase the spiritual atmosphere of that space. Teams will
be asked to consider the idea and give their feedback for the Aug. SLC meeting.
b. LMT - Both VBS and SS need volunteers and the LMT needs to recruit new members.
c. RDMT - The leak on the new flat roof is under warranty. The shed roof has been replaced. Ramp rails on the gazebo have
been repaired. The mulch over the landscaping fabric at the road sign need to be replaced. Repairs are a never ending
expense. There is a reserve for major property repairs but it is not adequately funded. Carpet squares are being considered
for rug replacement by area. The finance committee meets on August 3 and team budgets need to be in. The finance
committee doesn’t take minutes but perhaps they would be helpful. The current Columbarium landscaping is being privately
funded.
d. SMT - Now meets every other month. Concerns over the competition caused by WATW has been expressed on behalf of
the smorgasbord committee.
e. WMT - Concern over which version of The Lord’s Prayer will be used was expressed. Also questioned was the inclusion
of budget deficit figures in the bulletin. Budget increases are also a concern.
5. Pastor’s Report
Pastor Trish spoke about her call and the many Biblical allusions about others being called to do what they did not believe
they could do. Reinforcing her call to ordained ministry was the baptism of Julian Kitchenhoff at Whipholt Beach, and the
Celebration of Life for Dick Cross in Lakeville. She noted 2 new groups meeting at Salem, the JOY Group and Recovering
Couples Anonymous. Nine new church members joined Salem in June. Pastor Trish has been invited to apply for a
Collegeville Institute Fellowship in order to participate in the Collegeville Institute Rural Minnesota Fellows Program and is
considering applying.
6. SLC Ministry Work
a. Focus for 2017, Reformation Sunday and 500th anniversary
Martin Luther docudrama movie will be shown Aug. 20 at 6pm, with discussion at the tables during refreshments.
The Reformation banner is in place.
b. Visioning (included in above).
7. New Business
a. Preparation for Salem’s annual meeting. The nominating committee has been activated with the list of needed candidates.
Meeting is Sept. 10. The second reading of the proposed Salem constitution will take place this year, 2017. Several
additions to the by laws will be presented. The budget will be presented.
b. Other new business
The Longville Chamber has proposed that Salem conduct bingo games at next year’s 4th of July festivities, all proceeds
going to Salem. The SLC proposed a 2 month period to research the proposition.
