MASSACHUSETTS STATE COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCEThe athletics program at Salem State University is a member of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), the oldest Division III men’s and women’s intercollegiate league in the nation. The MASCAC has evolved into a highly competitive league which annually qualifies many of its teams and individual athletes for NCAA regional and national post-season championship tournaments and meets.

FACILITIESThe Salem State University intercollegiate athletic program operates out of the Richard B. O’Keefe Sports Complex, regarded as one of the finest athletic facilities among Massachusetts state universities. The multi-purpose venue features the 2,800-seat Richard H. Rockett Ice Arena, the 1,200-seat Tim Shea Court, an eight-lane swimming pool, four tennis courts, a baseball/softball indoor hitting cage, the George Jacobson golf training room, and a multi-purpose gym.

Adjacent to the O’Keefe Complex is the Harold E. and Marilyn J. Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center. This two-story, glass-walled, fully-equipped fitness center provides top-tier exercise equipment, locker rooms, recreational courts, and studios for group exercise classes and other activities.

At Central Campus is a state-of-the-art baseball complex, featuring a turf baseball field and the varsity tennis courts. Alumni field, located next to the O’Keefe Sports Complex, features lighting and renovated seating for fans.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICESMany academic support services are available to Salem State University student athletes, including study skills workshops, tutoring, specialized labs in mathematics, reading, writing, computers, and individual planning sessions. The athletic department is committed to success in the classroom.

STUDENT ATHLETE ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAAC) AND COMMUNITY SERVICEThe intercollegiate athletic department’s commitment to community service was recognized by the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators. Salem State was cited for outstanding community service projects performed by its student athletes. Salem State athletics has won the National Community Service Award in 2007, 2012 and 2013.

STUDENT ATHLETE/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM Student athletes are faced with challenges and pressures both on and off the playing field. The ability to juggle the demands of athletic performance, academic success and social responsibility is essential if student athletes are to enjoy a positive university experience. Salem State athletics focuses on integrating five commitment areas into the student athlete experience: athletic excellence, academic excellence, personal development, career development, and service.

GASSETT FITNESS CENTERThe new facility is a two-story, glass-walled addition with a large atrium entrance serving as the main entry into the O’Keefe Sports Complex. This incredible fitness center features:I

• Entry during regular building hours –99 hours per week during the academic year

• Group exercise class participation• Personal training• Batting cage use• Recreational swim• Recreational skate and pick-up hockey• Intramural and club sports• Locker rooms

• Studio use for group exercise classes, training and other activities

• Recreational courts for informal recreation including basketball and volleyball

• Free equipment borrowing and rentals• Special events and incentive programs• Sponsorship of guests

In addition to the state-of-the-art strength and cardio equipment that the facility provides, the fitness and recreation center features lounge areas that allow students to come together in an area separate from their academic spaces. Apart from meeting both recreational and social needs, the new facility also provides on-campus employment opportunities. Students are hired each semester in fitness, membership, facility, intramural, group exercise, personal training, and aquatic program areas.
