2. SALEM Salem is a small city in Essex County, Massachusetts, that is about 36 minutes north of Boston. Salem since it is on the ocean is a big maritime town, because itright next to the water. In 1790 Salem was the sixth largest city in country. Now it is just a small town of 40 000 3. WITCHCRAFT Witchcraft was invented to understand the unknown. It is a earth based religions and is practiced in almost all societies according to local beliefs and traditions. It dates back 40 000, to the Paleolithic age. Drawing of witchcraft dates back 30,000 years and are found in caves. Witch was known as the craft of the wise in ancient times. Witchcraft over time has been thought to be evil and the practice of Satin. 4. THE EVENT After this many other young girls in Salem started having fits andwhere declared bewitched. Some of these girls blamed local women for afflicting them. One of the accused witches confessed and named many other witches that were determined to destroy the puritans. In the months that followed more than 200 people were accused of witchcraft and brought to court 5. THE EVENT 2 In May, Governor William Phipps ordered the establishment of a Special Court of Oyer (to hear) and Terminer (to decide) for Suffolk, Essex and Middlesex counties to deal with the witch hysteria. In October Increase Mather, then president of Harvard, denounced the use of spectral evidence in the court. In response Governor Phipps stoped further arrests and obolished the Court of Oyer (to hear) and Terminer (to decide). He replaced these courts with the Superior Court of Judicature. 6. THE EVENT 3 All who where in jail for witchcraft where eventually pardoned by Phipps and the hysteria was over. 7. THE PROCESS There are over 20 people who accused people of being witches. Once they where accused they where put in front of a panel of judges who decided if they where guilty or not. Normally if they where found guilty they would be executed, some people plead guilty and weren't executed. Also there were the occasional couple of people that weren't found guilty of being witches and were released. 8. CONVICTED AND EXECUTED The accused and executed witches of the Salem witch trials include:Bridget Bishop, Sarah Good, Elizabeth How, Susana Martin, Rebecca Nurse, Sarah Wildes, Riv. George Burrough, Martha Carrier, George Jacobs Sr., Johns Procter, Martha Cory, Mary Esty, Ann Pudeator, Samuel Wardell, Alice Parker, Mary Parker, John Willard, Willmont Redd, and Margaret Scott.
