“Time to Step Up” If you missed the August general meeting, you missed a fantastic presentation on surf, fly fishing, by Mark Won and Richard Gilliam. They did an outstanding job covering how to read the cur-rents, swells, tides, marine life and birds, to determine possible feed-ing and holding areas for fish. Mark and Richard fish the Mon-terey Bay waters frequently as well as the surf all the way from Big Sur to Marin County. They shared in-formation on fly line types, leaders, tippets and how to set them up, also: types of rod/reels that have proven the ability to withstand the surf and a variety of flies . Mark and Richard have agreed to work with the club on an outing to do a hands on surf fly fishing session. Stay tuned for a date and more de-tails. Once again thanks to Mark

and Richard for the excellent pres-entation. Rod building class went off without a hitch. On the first night, Jay showed us his techniques for locating the rod spline, and handle and reel seat placement. We spent a good two-hours on the handles and reel seats and we were able to let the glue set over night. The next morning he went over guide measurements, proper guide wrap-ping and epoxy application. We spent the next six hours wrapping the guides, taking them off and re-wrapping them. At the end of the day we decided to finish our rods at home. I spent an additional four hours adding a multi-color dia-mond wrap on the butt section and another hour applying epoxy over the wraps and then used a flame to get rid of the air bubbles. I am glad I built my own rod wrapping station with power rod turner. (thanks YouTube) I think the rod came out pretty nice for my first time. We will be displaying our pro-jects at the next (continued on page 2)

Eagle Lake Recovery

This month, TU Field Director, Dave Lass, will report on the recent decision to

list the Eagle Lake Trout as an endangered species and the recovery plans for

Eagle Lake. In addition to an informative presentation, come join in for planning

for the Merced River outing, good food, friends and a great raffle.

As Greg Smith says, “becoming a fly fishing purist, tying your own flies and building your own rods, Hell, I just have to learn how to catch more fish”….. We managed to get the door open to the conference room this month for fly tying class. Bill went over the steps on tying the foam back humpy. One with a foam wing and the other with crystal flash wings. Tricks of fly tying that completely changed the whole fly. Next month he will be tying the foam grasshopper. Stop by if you can. The guest speaker for September will be Dave Lass. Dave is a T.U. Biologist and will be talk-ing about the recovery efforts for Eagle Lake. Be prepared to ask questions about Eagle lake or and other body of water that you’re interested in. September’s outing is scheduled for Sept 16-18th. The guys will be fishing the Merced River. Give Jay a call for more details. The board needs your help. It’s time to step up and help your club out. We have two posi-tions to fill next year. The Treasure and Raffle Chairmen. Fishing Report from Hennan Lake

On Thursday September 8th. Rick McCombs and Sutter Creek’s Tim Murphy headed over Carson Pass to Do

a little fishing at Heenan Lake and Indian Creek Reservoir. Heenan was in good shape. No algae bloom and

the water was very clear. Weeds along the bank didn’t present a problem and seemed to hold fish. Observed

lots of fish feeding on the surface, some were feeding on floating snail and other on blood midge adults. The

parking lot was full and most anglers seemed to be catching fish. We caught 4 fish. The biggest was 27 inches.

The flies that seemed to be catching fish included: the Prince Nymph, Copper John, and the Olive Wooley

Bugger. Indian Creek was also in good shape with average water level. Fishing was on the slow side, DFG has

apparently been planting Cutthoats instead of Rainbow in the last two years and the reports reflect much

slower fishing then in past 2 years, We got just a few grabs and managed to land a couple fish, one rainbow

around 12 inches and a 16 inch Cutthroat. Contact Rick if you’re planning to go to Heenan Lake.

A Note From ed.

Despite Club Secretary, Dave Gambetta’s assertion that I have been elected as lifetime Newsletter Editor, It

seems that after near abouts 20 years of boring the socks off you folks, it must be time for a change. Since

moving to Sutter Creek, I’ve not been able to attend meeting and I think that the club would be better served

by someone who is more actively involved. I would like one of the newer members to step up and take over

the reins. But, what the hell, one of you old guys could probably do it to. Qualification include: a 5th grade

vocabulary, slight knowledge of fishing terminology and techniques, descent sense of humor, irreverence for

tradition and social norms and a healthy lack of sensitivity to criticism. Pussies need not apply. If you think

you that you might have what it take to write trash and dribble contact Rick (ed) @ (209) 267-8088..or just

respond to the e-mail when you get this newsletter. I mean, really, what do you have to lose?

Heenan Lake Egg Collecting Station—History

The Heenan Lake station is at about 7,000 ft elevation in the Sierra Nevada range. The egg collection station was

opened in April 1939 on an experimental basis to collect Lahontan Cutthroat Trout eggs. This first year's take was

added to that collected at the regular station at upper Blue Lake. In 1940, a small tenthouse was constructed for the

station operator, and about 700,000 eggs were collected between April 17 and May 12.

The station was closed in 1943 because of World War II manpower shortages. Operations were resumed after the war

ended. The station is operated only during April and May and currently produces from 750,000 to 1,000,000 cutthroat

trout eggs each year. The Nevada Fish and Game Commission also procures eggs here.
