Pumpkin Fest Organizers for the 2nd Pumpkinfest to be held October 2 in Crete, have asked if 4-H’ers would put together a petting zoo for the city kids that don’t get to see them everyday like many

of our 4-H families. We would be looking for some very tame examples of the everyday farm animals, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, horse, chickens, rabbits, and then also perhaps some of those from the pet show. These don’t have to be winners from the fair, but the animals that the youth can pet and become

familiar with. If you have an animal that you would be glad to share from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. that day, please drop Eric a message or phone call so he can coordinate the offering. Fall 4-H Fun On Saturday, October 8th we will be having a fun experience in the great outdoors at Tuxedo Park. Participants will complete three home environment projects which can be taken to the county fair next summer. The projects will be: a ghost, owl, and burlap sign. We will also be playing Native American games, conducting a scavenger hunt, and listening to a story in the woods along the Tuxedo Park Community Trail. Each 4-H’er will make their own lunch over the camp fire. Please wear pants and come dressed for the weather (i.e. wear a warm coat and gloves) if needed and appropriate footwear.

Cost for this 4-H fun day is $17 and is due in our office by Friday, September 30th. Registration numbers are limited so call early to reserve your spot. This is open to all ages of 4-H’ers in Saline County. The day begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m. Plan to meet at

advisory to the Extension staff, providing feedback, program ideas, and comments or concerns. Members vote on issues that may affect or change the program in Saline County. They oversee financial assistance for 4-H manuals, and scholarships for camps and college. The council is the workforce behind the

RibFest where a significant amount of funds are earned. Council membership terms are 2 years for adults, and one year for youth, with all eligible for multiple terms. Please consider taking your turn to help give back to the 4-H program in Saline County. Clover Kids

Where children experience the joy of learning in a supportive,

creative, challenging, and fun environment. Nebraska Extension in Saline County (Wilber) is offering a Clover Kids 4-H club at Crete, Dorchester, Friend, Wilber and Tri-County Elementary Schools. Clover Kids will meet one time a month for an hour in the elementary commons/lunch room or other designated area. Meetings will be held once a month (as long as school is in session) beginning in October. If you are interested in enrolling your child, please call the Extension Office at (402) 821-2151 by September 16th. Who is Clover Kids for?

Clover Kids is the officially recognized 4-H program in Nebraska for any child age 5-7 (as of Jan 1st of 2017). This program provides a variety of educational and recreational experiences in a non-competitive environment. The primary goal is to promote the child’s stages of development: intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally. Is a Clover Kid in 4-H? Yes, however they participate in a different way than a 4-H member. Clover Kids gives children the opportunity to learn in an exploratory, non-competitive environment. What type of projects can Clover Kids sign up for? Projects can range from cooking, crafts, gardening, sewing, clothing, fashion show, public speaking, pets, bucket calves (and other livestock under the weight of 350lbs), showmanship, among other fun and creative projects. What to expect at a Clover Kids meeting: Clover Kids will meet as a group once a month for an hour. These meetings will be held at the school, right after school. Parents will need to pick their child/children up at 4:30/4:45 (depending on what time school is dismissed) if they do not attend the meeting with their child. Each month kids will learn about a different topic through a variety of different ways, such as: reading, physical activity, crafts, foods/baking, and other fun ways of exploration. The group will be directed by a leader who will encourage children to participate in the group activities. Children are encouraged to use the projects that they complete during their meetings for fair exhibition.

Clover Kids (continued)

Along with group meetings, Clover Kids will also have the opportunity to participate in Clover Kids workshops where they will meet as a group to work on other projects that they can enter in the county fair. Can Clover Kids go to camp? YES!!! Clover Kids may attend camps especially designed to meet their develop-mental stages. A Clover Kid camp involves youth in a one day or a multi-day “camp like” setting where educational, hands-on activities occur. What does it cost for my child to participate in Clover Kids? There is a $16 enrollment fee per child (each year) enrolled in Clover Kids. This fee covers enrollment and supplies that will be used for activities throughout the year. Checks are payable to Saline County 4-H Council. Payment will need to be received at Nebraska Extension in Saline county by November 14th. Payment can be mailed to the Nebraska Extension in Saline County at: P.O. Box 978, Wilber, NE, 68465 or brought to the office at 306 W. 3rd Street, Wilber, NE. How can I sign my child/children up for Clover Kids? Contact our office in Wilber at (402) 821-2151 for any questions concerning Clover Kids or to sign your child/children up for Clover Kids. Please contact the office by September 16th to sign your child/children up for Clover Kids. You will need to then enroll online by November 14th with the instructions that will be mailed to you. What if my child wants to join, but is 8 (or older)? Great!! We have other 4-H clubs designed specifically for your child’s age. Call our office and we can help you locate a local 4-H club to join.
