Welcome to our Spring/Summer NewsletterI am so pleased to be asked to write the introduction to The Salisbury Hospice Charity Spring/Summer newsletter.

My name is Mandy Coombes and I have been appointed as the Team Leader for Salisbury Hospice at Home service. I am a registered nurse and my background is predominantly nursing in the community. I have worked as a district nurse and community matron in the Salisbury area moving away six years ago to work for Marie Curie Nursing Service. More recently I have worked for another national charity providing Hospice Care in Berkshire and Oxfordshire. I applied for the Salisbury Hospice at Home Team Leader as it combined my passions for nursing in the home and caring for people who are at the end of life. I have been at Salisbury Hospice for two months now and everyone is so welcoming and it feels like I have come home!

The Hospice at Home service will be offering free nursing care to people in their own homes at the end of their life and offering support for family and friends. More information on the service is on page 3. We are so fortunate Salisbury Hospice Charity has provided the funding for this invaluable service, however we will need your help to continue. Please read the newsletter to find out about some of the fantastic events planned and how you can be involved.

For many people what matters to them most at the end of their life is to remain at home with those people who are important to them and surrounded by all that is familiar to them. Salisbury Hospice at Home offer free nursing care to people at the end of their life and support for their loved ones. Our nursing assistants will generally be providing one-to-one nursing care and support overnight in the person’s own home, usually for nine hours. We will also offer care if it is needed for a shorter period of time, or during the evening or daytime. Having a Hospice at Home nursing assistant allows family members to get a good night’s sleep or take a break during the day, knowing their loved one is being safely and professionally cared for.

As a new service we have been busy recruiting staff to provide this care. The first of these nursing assistants have attended training days and had the opportunity to work in the hospice to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to deliver the care people need in their own homes.

A GreatFamily Day Out

4 Spring/Summer 2016

The Wessex Country Fair has become a firm favourite in our calendar of events and we are thrilled that the Earl & Countess of Pembroke have once again kindly given permission for the event to be held in the beautiful grounds of Wilton House.

Bring along the whole family – we have something for everyone!

A wide range of trade stands, both in the dedicated shopping marquee and also surrounding the main arena, will provide visitors with the opportunity to buy good quality crafts, delicious foods and beautiful fashion and home accessories.

The Wessex Country Fair is also a celebration of country ways, rural lifestyles and country sports. This year the Main Arena Attractions include the Wilton Hunt, Dog Agility, Birds of Prey, Dressage Camels and Steam and Vintage Vehicles. In addition to the main ring attractions there will be plenty to keep you entertained throughout the day. Try your skills at Archery, take in a relaxing ride on the 10 seat wagonette pulled by heavy horses or place a bet on the duck racing.

As ever, we will have a delicious range of high quality hot and cold food and drink stands and this year for the first time ever we will have a Music Stage showcasing talent from local artists. The Touring Bar Company will again provide local and speciality beers and a range of soft drinks, giving you the chance to soak up the summer sun to the soothing sound of music.

By keeping our costs to a minimum we can ensure that every penny possible raised at the Midnight Walk goes directly to the charity and we are incredibly grateful for this generous on-going support.

Vita SkinVita Skin Spa recently held an online auction with all 13 therapists being put up for auction. The winner of each lot was able to build their own bespoke day from a huge choice of packages, treatments and specialities available. The auction raised an incredible £3,000 for Salisbury Hospice. All the team at Salisbury Hospice would also like to send their congratulations to Vita Skin Spa for winning the English Hair and Beauty Awards, Spa of the Year 2016! Fantastic!

TrethowansTrethowans Solicitors have long been supporters of the hospice and their fundraising is even more heartfelt after their much loved colleague Nicola Richards was a patient in the hospice. Tribute Funds

A gift in your WillGifts in Wills are vital to the work of Salisbury Hospice Charity. They ensure that we are able to continue to provide the invaluable specialist palliative care and support for people who have life-limiting illnesses, and their families.

The care and support provided by Salisbury Hospice is free of charge to anyone who may need it, and we want to be here to ensure that people in our local community have access to the best end of life care. By leaving a gift to us in your Will, you can help us safeguard future services. You don’t have to be wealthy to leave us a gift in your Will, any amount, large or small, is extremely valuable.

We are delighted to be working with Parker Bullen Solicitors who have kindly offered to donate 10% of their Will preparation fee to us, if a gift is left to Salisbury Hospice Charity. For further information about making a Will, please contact Stewart Donald on 01722 412000 or visit their website www.parkerbullen.co.uk

If you would like to discuss the ways in which a gift might benefit the charity, please contact Jane Winstanley on 01722 342655 or email [email protected]

Gifts in Wills pledged in the past are supporting our work today, and gifts pledged today will ensure that we will be here in the future too.

A Tribute Fund offers a positive and enduring way to remember and celebrate the life of someone special whilst raising valuable funds for Salisbury Hospice Charity.

Once set up, the online tribute page allows family, friends and colleagues to share thoughts, feelings and memories including photographs, stories and messages of condolence.

It also allows you to raise funds in memory and every donation acts as a tribute to your loved one and supports our work at the same time – a special way to let their memory live on, a place to help you remember and reflect whilst helping other people facing incurable illnesses.

Nikki Spicer, along with her family, set up a tribute page for her Mum, Sandra who died at Salisbury Hospice in 2015 aged 54.

“My Mum was diagnosed in January 2015 and after a short battle with cancer, spent her last few days at the Salisbury Hospice in March. The care she received was truly outstanding and the way the staff and volunteers helped both Mum and us, will stay with me forever. At a time that was so difficult, they knew when to be there to help and when to give you time alone. Every aspect

of the hospice really was amazing and they made Mums final days as comfortable and peaceful as they could possibly be.

The tribute page we set up for Mum, has become very special to me. It really helped us through the first few weeks and gave friends and family an opportunity to share pictures and memories in the run up to the funeral. We asked for donations instead of flowers at the funeral and the tribute page has raised more than £900 so far. Now, a year on, I still find comfort from lighting a candle on the tribute page on special days and to leave a message or a picture. Friends and family do the same, which gives me strength on days that I may need it. It has become a place to share memories and remember our beautiful Mum.”

Setting up a Tribute Fund is easy and free of charge. Simply visit tributefunds.salisburyhospicecharity.org.uk and follow the few simple steps to create your own personalised page in minutes. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jane on 01722 342655 or email [email protected]

How do I set up a Tribute Fund?
