Uniquely FamiliarThere’s nothing like a good oxymoron,

especially when not intended. Throughout the year, I hear from volunteers, citizens and vendors how special Salmon Days is. What makes it so special? There are hundreds of other arts and crafts festivals. There are even other salmon festivals, but the feeling at Salmon Days is uniquely familiar, and this is by design.

We work tirelessly each year to bring all of the elements people anticipate at a festival. You can expect the traditional fair foods, rows of booths, volunteers and shuttles. So why does Salmon Days feel different? Our uniqueness lies in some of the details you may not know about the festival.

Did you know all of our vendors go through a very regulated jurying process? People often think someone applies, writes a check and then

shows up. We form various committees from different industries who evaluate each and every application. We review product photos, descriptions, previous booth pictures. The artists we bring to Salmon Days truly are the best in the region and the quality of merchandise is different from what you might expect.

Every decision we make is with the attendee’s experience in mind. Try and fi nd somewhere at Salmon Days where you don’t hear music, you can’t do it. Five stages and three radio stations on site are all strategically placed so that the atmosphere is always festive.

The festival grounds are comprised of very distinct areas and we work to make them all feel different. Similar to the different worlds at Disneyland, on an infi nitely smaller budget, we try and make each “world” of Salmon Days its own experience. That’s why Front Street North feels different than the Greenbelt Gallery. The

Field of Fun feels different than the Hatchery and so on.

And fi nally it’s the people. Issaquah is one of the best places in the world to live and it’s because of who we are. For the most part, we are a small community made up of friendly, courteous, patient and caring people, even strangers don’t entirely seem like strangers.

So it’s with great enthusiasm that we present to you this year’s Salmon Days. We hope you enjoy your favorite things about festivals while appreciating the subtle ways we try and make ours uniquely familiar.

Snoqualmie Indian Tribe

425.888.6551 | P.O. Box 969 • Snoqualmie 98065 | SnoqualmieTribe.us

Snoqualmie Indian Tribe members have lived in the Puget Sound region since time immemorial. Long before explorers came to the Paci c Northwest, members hunted deer and elk, shed for salmon, and gathered berries and wild plants for food and medicine.

In 1855, Snoqualmie Chief Patkanim and other tribal members were signatories of the Point Elliott Treaty, which reserved Native American Tribes in the Puget Sound area the right to hunt, sh, and live in the places they had done so for thousands of years.

Today, the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe remains vibrant and active in the surrounding communities. Members reside in Snoqualmie, North Bend, Fall City, Issaquah, Carnation, and throughout the Puget Sound area. The Tribe takes a great deal of pride in supporting the community and has donated over $5 million to local schools and non-pro t organizations throughout Washington.

The Tribe has celebrated the return of salmon for centuries and is a proud oh shal “spawnsor” of the 2015 Issaquah Salmon Days.

Tribe Facts:• For centuries, Snoqualmie

People have been stewards of Snoqualmie Falls – the origin of the history of our people.

• Many ancestors are buried near Snoqualmie Falls and that area is sacred ground. The Tribe constantly strives to keep Snoqualmie Falls, Mt. Si, and other culturally signi cant areas free from encroachment and restructuring.

Kids Stage – Ongoing acts throughout the day will entertain children and children at heart with singing, dancing, juggling, magic and more. Ronald McDonald will also be stopping by each day for an amazing act! Thank you to Fred Meyer and McDonalds for their continued support.

Arena Sports Soccer ExperienceCome and watch the Sounders of the future.

Arena Sports will be bringing out their giant soccer fi eld again. Kids can get instruction, scrimmage or just run around and be kids. In its 3rd year at Salmon Days, this has become a great attraction.

Human Hamster BallsJust as cool as it sounds, these are some big

balls. How big? Big enough for 200 hamsters or one kid. Banic Chiropractic is the hero of this event for bringing it back again. Head over early or late as the lines get long.

Fish PrintsChildren have been making Fish Prints at

Salmon Days for years and some have created quite the collection. Some make it to the fridge, others get laminated, what will you do with yours? Seattle Children’s Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center continues to bring this tradition to Salmon Days where kids can show

their creativity with paint... and fi sh... and paint brushes... and paper.

Toymaker’s WorkshopJoin our great volunteers and Rick Hartman,

professional toy maker for a DIY toy making project. Move throughout the various stations sawing, hammering and putting together your own unique toy that you can take with you.

SAMBICA Infl atable ZoneHowever many infl atables you think we’re

bringing to Salmon Days this year, there’s probably more. Bigger than life infl atables that you can jump, climb, slide and joust on. Children of all ages will enjoy bouncing good times (BGT’s).

Mini TrainsJust as cool as their larger counter-parts

but much smaller. The whole team at Allegro Pediatrics (formerly Pediatric Associates) is looking forward to having you all aboard. Might want to stop by the food court fi rst as the line will

be pretty long (but worth it).

Springfree TrampolinesJumping on a trampoline with springs is kind

of like using a payphone these days. Sure, it suits the purpose if you can fi nd one but new technology has made them mostly obsolete. Come by for some Flippin’ Fun!

Puget Sound DockDogsBring the whole family to watch our four-

legged friends compete at long jump, high jump and speed retrieve. Depending on the weather, you may or may not want to be standing in the splash zone. This Fintastic event is once again Ohfi shally spawnsored by Alpine Animal Hospital and Cascade Water Alliance.

The Quiet RoomThe place to be when your young ones need

to be cleaned, changed and fed before heading back to the festival. Our partner, Friends of Youth, is happy to support and service this peaceful getaway.

Field of Fun More fun than you can shake a stick at.

Let’s keep our watershed clean for ourselves and our fish friends!

6 Keep oil and antifreeze off the ground and out of the storm drains.

6 Use organic fertilizer or compost in your yard instead of weed and feed products.

6 Take your car to a car wash to keep soap out of the streams.

CompostingAmong all of the things this year at Salmon

Days is our commitment to keeping a clean and green festival. An event of this size has a way of catching up with our carbon footprint.

Ensuring a healthy environment for the salmon is always on our minds. This year, we continue our initiative to use only compostable service ware and to-go containers. This is a joint effort of the City of Issaquah’s Offi ce of Sustainability, CleanScapes / Recology and the Salmon Days Offi ce.

From straws to plates and everything in between, Salmon Days will again be one of the festivals in the country that requires vendors to use only compostable products. Made from corn, sugar cane, bamboo and wheat by-products, which are all fully compostable, these goods allow Salmon Days organizers to

drastically reduce waste destined for the landfi ll. Friendly volunteers and event professionals from CleanScapes / Recology will happily help you dispose of your food containers at our recycle stations.

So grab a tasty treat, enjoy some delicious food and come help us “re-spawn-sibly” celebrate the return of the salmon to our local hatchery.

Issaquah’s Sister City

‘A Stroll by the Casbah in Northern Morocco’ a recently published article in the New York Times, identifi es the unique charm and beauty of Chefchaouen, Morocco. A city we are proud to share a thriving sister city relationship with.

Visitors to Morocco remember the mountains and desert, the bright colors and intricate

designs and details. Through our Sister City Chefchaouen, Issaquah has developed rich relationships and learned a great appreciation for their culture. The two communities have exchanged students, artists and governmental representatives for nearly a decade.

You may have seen the ‘Blue Door’ outside Issaquah’s City Hall. It is a gift of friendship. A symbol of, and testament to, the deep relationship with Chefchaouen. And in Chefchaouen there is a ‘fi shy’ presence around their city hall, offi ces and homes.

This year, Issaquah is honored to host four representatives from Chefchaouen: the Mayor, a Sister City Commissioner and two artists.

Meet them in person, view beautiful artistry in leather and wood. Continue the friendships’ between the northwest of the United States and the northwest of Africa! Welcome them to our corner of the world at their booth on East Sunset Way.

Salmon Days, still #FlippinFun after 46 years

In 1970, the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce presented the fi rst Issaquah Salmon Days Festival. The event grew out of the desire to replace the once popular Labor Day celebration, as well as a need to celebrate one of Issaquah’s greatest treasures – the annual return of the salmon.

In the beginning, festival attractions included the Kiwanis Salmon BBQ, hatchery displays, an art show, children’s parade led by J.P. Patches, Little League football games at Veterans Memorial Park, fi re crew competitions and more.

In 1980, the Salmon Days Festival and Grande

Parade underwent two major changes that have been credited with altering the course of the festival: Salmon Days became a Seafair-sanctioned event and a festival fl oat was created.

To aid in the growth process, merchandise was introduced, the fi rst paid festival director was hired and large ohfi shal spawnsors came onboard in the ‘80s.

In 1990, the festival introduced the Salmon Days Limited Edition Print, a signed and numbered run of 450 prints featuring original artwork. The festival retired the collection at the end of 2003 and almost all of the past prints have sold out.

Today, Salmon Days is still presented by the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce with the goal

of providing a community celebration focused on honoring the miraculous return of the salmon. The Kiwanis are still barbecuing salmon, now almost two tons each year. The Grande Parade features more than 100 entries annually. Veterans’ Memorial Field is transformed into the Field of Fun, and hosts free games and activities for families to enjoy. Ohfi shal sporting events have replaced the once popular fi re crew competitions. What began as an art show has manifested itself into a marketplace of more than 250 on-site artists selling their handcrafted pieces to an audience of more than 180,000 people.

Come join us and make your own festival tradition!

Creative Children for Charity partners with artEAST and Sammamish Family YMCA to invite the community to break a Guinness World Record by helping paint a Salmon Mural and achieve most contributions to painting-by-numbers

Nothing says “come be a part of this” like art does. Art brings neighbors together and gets a collective community energy churning. Creative Children for Charity, artEAST and Sammamish Family YMCA strongly believe in art’s ability to build communities and raise awareness of important issues. The partnership between artEAST, Creative Children for Charity and the Sammamish Family YMCA aims to give youth the opportunity to envision and guide important community initiatives, and help develop engaged and committed leaders for the future.

In 2014, thousands of Salmon Days Festival participants created salmon crowns and salmon pictures while visiting the artEAST Art Center during the festival in Issaquah. Creative Children for Charity and artEAST hosted 4,000 people that weekend and more than 600 guests created paper salmon crowns.

This year, the two organizations are excited to partner with the Sammamish Family YMCA to bring that energy to the festival again, support

Salmon Days, and the community, as well as the important work the festival does in helping understand the importance of restoring and protecting salmon habitats.

This year, Salmon Days Festival participants are invited to break a Guinness World Record by helping paint a Salmon Mural. Stop by the artEAST Art Center at 95 Front Street North in the heart of downtown Issaquah, pick up a brush and paint! The event will take place on October 3 and 4, 10am to 6pm, during the offi cial Salmon Days Festival hours. Information about the festival, parking and transportation can be found on the festival website: salmondays.org

“We are aiming to bring over 2800 people in our community to break this record and also

inspire youth to take on big challenges. We are really excited to take an offi cial attempt to break this record” said Chirag Vedullapalli, Founder of Creative Children For Charity.

Please join Creative Children for Charity, artEAST and the Sammamish Family YMCA to make history, put Issaquah on the Guinness World Map, and put art in our community.

Every year, Salmon Days brings an estimated 150,000 people to enjoy our city for two days each October. While it is true that Salmon Days puts us on the map each fall, it’s what happens the rest of the year that makes Issaquah such a great place to visit. There’s something to do for everyone. That probably sounds cliché but come back after Salmon Days and let us prove it to you.

Looking for something to do as a family? The Cougar Mt. Zoo sits elevated on Cougar Mt. providing unobstructed views of Lake Sammamish. Get up close and personal with cougars and tigers and much more. Issaquah boasts dozens of great parks featuring playgrounds, picnic shelters, walking trails and BBQ pits. The brand new IMAX Regal Movie Theater in the Issaquah Highlands is completely state of the art and the best movie going experience around.

For those of you who want a night out, Issaquah has several great options for wine tasting, live music, comedy, outdoor concerts and restaurants to meet every budget and palate.

Art enthusiasts can just take a stroll down Front Street and visit all of the boutique stores featuring works from local artists. Each August, you can enjoy the Issaquah Art Walk on Friday nights on Front Street. The Village Theater produces award winning plays in a spectacular venue.

Reality TV making you feel dumber? Educate yourself with a trip to the Issaquah History Museum, Train Depot or library. All have great information and a great way to kill a few hours with or without the kids.

We’re seeing a rebirth in the hiking craze. As soon as we get trail maps printed at the Visitor Information Center, they’re off the shelves and

into the hands of eager people wanting to explore our three mountains, Squak, Cougar and Tiger. Still haven’t caught the hiking bug? Lake Sammamish is a great place to fi sh, waterski and swim.

Issaquah is proud of its shopping collection. Gilman Village is a wonderful assortment of boutique stores offering everything from antiques to clothing and everything in between. We also have the things you would only expect in a much larger town. Costco, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes, Sports Authority, Dicks Sporting Goods, Fred Meyer, Target, Trader Joes, QFC and two Safeways are all within our city limits.

So put us to the test, head on over with or without plans and see what there is to do in Issaquah the other 363 days of the year.
