3. Required reading: Working by Studs Terkel, New Press, 2004 ed. or What Should I Do with My Life? by Po Bronson, Ballantine Books, 2005.

4. Required writing: minimum 5-page expository piece on your experience during the course, what you learned about the profession, and what you learned about yourself – whether or not you see yourself pursuing this profession in the future explaining why or why not. Due: Friday, February 1st, 5pm by e-mail to Dawn Dellea ([email protected]).

AcceptanceAcceptance into the course will be determined as a result of the review of your application by the

alum/parent sponsor and a possible telephone interview. Determination of acceptance will be made as soon as possible after the application deadline. However, you may not know of your status until after the registration deadline for the course. In other words, you may want to apply to this course, but register for an alternative course, then wait to hear about your status for this course.

Selection into the course comes as a final decision from the alum/parent sponsor and will be based solely on his or her evaluation of your application materials and any interview that may take place. Seniority by class will be only one factor.

PlacementsThe following placements have been arranged by John Noble, Director of the Career Center and

Dawn Dellea, Manager of Alumni & Parent Engagement Programs. Each placement represents an agreement between Williams College and the sponsor to provide a shadowing experience along with specific work tasks and/or work experience.

In many cases, specific work assignments cannot be determined far ahead of time, so descriptions may be somewhat general. 2. PUBLIC SECTOR CONSULTINGWHO: Gary Labovich P’14, Executive Vice President of Booz Allen Hamilton has a leadership role in the firm’s civil government business. Since joining the firm in 2004, he has focused on providing strategy consulting and technology solutions to clients in a range of markets that include infrastructure, health, business of government, finance, and justice and homeland security. Come work in one of the coolest (and warmest!) cities in the country, LA. DrinkCity is a new tech startup in California started by Perry Kalmus '03. A revolutionary marketing concept for big alcohol brands and bars, DrinkCity is pushing the nightlife envelope by merging online marketing techniques with on-site experiential marketing initiatives to give consumers the greatest exposure to great bars and brands in their alcohol preference. On the surface, DrinkCity is like a Groupon for bars, but a lot cooler. DrinkCity is like the DailyCandy of drinking high-end alcohol, combining the power of social media with the power of social gathering to maximize the number of people who see a logo, taste a product, and try out a venue. A few times a month, we pick a cool bar and pair it with a high-end spirit, wine or beer, and then lower the price on all drinks with that brand to $4, all night. This entices consumers to come out and try both the brand and the bar in a great social setting. Behind the scenes, however, the marketing initiatives taking place have literally never been done in the alcohol space. Perry Kalmus grew up in Princeton, NJ. He graduated from The Lawrenceville School in 1999. He was a member of the Region 1 soccer team for the U.S. Olympic Development Program, and played Varsity soccer at Williams. He was an Economics major and studied abroad in Italy and Australia. After graduating from Williams in 2003 he founded an educational consulting firm based out of Princeton, NJ (www.princetoned.com). Then in 2005, he moved out to Los Angeles and started working in the entertainment business.WHERE: Offices are located in Los Angeles. Interns must be 21+ years old and be able to find their own housing in Los Angeles.WHAT: Winter Study students will get to work directly with Perry and Ori, the two heads of the company and play an active role in the expansion process of an up-and-coming start-up in the social media space. 5. ENTERTAINMENT WHO: Guy Danella '03Guy Danella graduated from Williams College in 2003 with a degree in Political Science (International Relations).  During his time at Williams, he was a Captain of the Lacrosse team, organized a student film festival and was a TA in the video lab, constantly making shorts and music videos in and out of the classroom. He moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment and spent a year working for the actor/producer Tom Cruise during post production on THE LAST SAMURAI and on set for his film COLLATERAL starring Tom and Jamie Foxx. Guy then moved over to the William Morris Agency and spent a year working as an assistant in the Literary department

reading scripts constantly and on the hunt for new talent on the rise. Guy has now been at film finance/production company Gold Circle Films for just under 2 years and has risen up quick. Starting as an assistant to a Vice President, Guy was promoted after 6 months to Creative Executive and has again been given additional responsibilities when said VP recently left the company. He is currently presiding over half of the company's slate and is responsible for bringing in new material for potential projects and directors to the company. Part of the job consists of tracking foreign directors and potential remake properties which led Guy to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time this summer.WHERE: Century City, Los AngelesGold Circle is an independent film finance and production company in Los Angeles with distribution deals at Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Paramount Vantage, New Line Cinema and Lions Gate. We are responsible for the films MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, WHITE NOISE (Michael Keaton), THE WEDDING DATE (Dermot Mulroney & Debra Messing), SLITHER and BECAUSE I SAID SO (Diane Keaton & Mandy Moore). Gold Circle is currently in post production on TOWN CREEK directed by Joel Schumacher and in production in Winnipeg on A HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT starring Virginia Madsen.WHAT: This is all about the material. You will be helping Guy get through the mass amount of scripts, books, and foreign films that are constantly coming his way for review. Mainly will consist of writing coverage on said types of material and then discussing with Guy. You will also read Guy's current projects and he will discuss the ins and outs of the development process and what it really takes to transform an idea into a script and eventually get that script to the screen. This is a total interactive, hands on experience and a behind the scenes look at what it is to really be making movies. We will also be in production on a film, CHILLED IN MIAMI, starring Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr starting in January as well.APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Resume and letter of interest. Will be asked to write coverage as well.

6. SPORTS MEDIA/BROADCASTING WHO: Sam Flood ’83 Sam Flood is Executive Producer, NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network. Flood is only the seventh Executive Producer in NBC Sports history in June 2010 after serving as Coordinating Producer, NBC Sports since July 2005.

Flood is the producer for the critically acclaimed and most-watched NFL studio show Football Night in America. A former college hockey captain, Flood is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the sport of hockey in the U.S. and is credited for creating the “Inside the Glass” analyst position. As executive producer, he also oversees production for NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network’s coverage of Horse Racing, IndyCar, Tour de France, French Open, and MLS, among others.

A 15-time Emmy Award winner, and three-time Eclipse Award winner, Flood produced the daytime show at the 2012 London Olympic Games, the most watched event in U.S. television history, his 10th Olympic assignment for NBC.

One of the many Olympic researchers who moved on to successful roles in the world of sports and entertainment, Flood joined NBC Sports in 1986 as an Olympic researcher for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea. He produced Olympic track and field during the 1996 Atlanta Games, 2000 Sydney Games, 2004 Athens Games and 2008 Beijing Games and produced the daytime studio show at the Vancouver Games. He won an Emmy in 1999 for live event turnaround for the 1999 World Track and Field Championship in Seville, Spain. In seven days in 2002, Flood produced the Daytona 500 and the Closing Ceremony to the Salt Lake Games. WHERE: NBC Sports Broadcast group (NYC) hardly needs an introduction, however, as a major producer of sports programming, NBC is involved in all major sporting events and venues from NFL Football to NHL Hockey to NASCAR Racing to Master’s and Ryder Cup Golf, the Olympics, and more.WHAT: You will be working on a project designed by Sam Flood, in addition to observing the production of NFL Football and other aspects of a busy production team. 7.  SPORTS-BASEBALLWHO:  Mark Scialabba ’02Mark Scialabba majored in Economics and was a Captain of the Baseball team while at Williams. After graduating he earned an MBA and Masters in Sports Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2006.  For the past seven and a half seasons he has worked for the Washington Nationals primarily in Player Development.  He was promoted to Director, Minor League Operations in October of 2009 and previously served two years as Assistant Director, Player Development.  He works on all aspects of the Player Development system including contracts, roster management, player personnel decisions, Latin Academy operations and budgets.  Prior to his role with the Nationals he spent the summer of 2005 as Assistant GM of the Cape Cod League’s Brewster Whitecaps and the summer of 2004 as an intern with the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton, Florida.

WHERE:  The Washington Nationals, Nationals Park, Washington, DC WHAT:  Students interested in pursuing a career in Baseball Operations will be exposed to the day-to-day responsibilities a Major League front-office staff faces in the off-season including, but not limited to; analytics, player evaluation, scouting, player development, research, salary arbitration and spring training preparation.APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Students must submit a resume and cover letter explaining their interest in the position and are encouraged to send any relevant course work or projects that are applicable to working in a front-office for an MLB team. 8. SPORTS-NEW YORK JETS-NFL THE BUSINESS OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTSWHO: Seth Rabinowitz, ‘89Seth Rabinowitz is Senior Vice President – Marketing & Fan Engagement for the NFL’s New York Jets. He oversees the team’s marketing, digital media, merchandise, and gameday production functions. In this capacity, Seth is responsible for everything from the look of the team’s logo, to the articles on its website, to the singer of the national anthem before the start of a game.

Seth joined the Jets in April 2013. Previously he worked at the NFL League Office in New York City for 11 years, during which time he served in a variety of roles including Strategic Planning, Business Development, International, and Marketing. He also has worked as an independent sports marketing consultant and is co-founder of a digital media company. He graduated from Williams in 1989 with an Economics / Political Science double major. He also holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Pennsylvania.WHERE: New York Jets, Atlantic Health Jets Training Center, Florham Park, New Jersey (approx. 30 miles westof NewYork City)WHAT: You will work with Seth and members of his group on a project to create external website and social media benchmarks. As part of the NFL, the Jets get a significant amount of information regarding the performance of the team’s digital properties relative to the other 31 teams in the NFL. They do not, however, have information that is nearly as robust for benchmarks in other sports, the broader entertainment sector, or other industries. You will develop a list of digital media exemplars, establish their performance benchmarks and best practices, and compile a written report (and supporting exhibits) on this topic. Because the chairman’s principal office is located in San Francisco, you will be spending time with him learning about the responsibilities of the board of directors of a company whose shares are traded on the  New York Stock Exchange.  Through meeting one of his sons who works in the business in San Francisco, you will also learn about how a family defines its role in a large commercial enterprise.APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:  You must be a junior or senior with a serious interest in publishing as a career. Resume and 400-500 word essay on why publishing is of interest to you.  10.  INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CONSULTING WHO:  Reed M. Wiedower '00Reed is the Chief Technology Officer at New Signature, a rapidly growing IT consulting firm headquartered in Washington DC with offices across the east coast and around the country. He's spent time at a wide variety of IT firms and positions, working as an architect, designer, developer and systems administrator, all of which appreciated his double-major in Political Science and English. Currently, he leads the research and development side of New Signature, mixing education, sales, support and consulting together. New Signature employees are strategic consultants dedicated to delivering an amazing customer experience, so we want applicants to be able to speak and conduct themselves properly. Secondarily, we're looking for students who get excited about technology. Applicants should be excited about implementing new technologies, whether it be server clusters, hypervisors, VoIP or IPv6. If discussing net neutrality while using PowerShell to troubleshoot a Hyper-V replica cluster doesn't sound like fun (or if learning about these things doesn’t either), you might look towards another field. Finally, we want to have onboard individuals who are excited to learn, even if it is outside their area of expertise. Students won't be drilled on their IT knowledge, but a good basic tech foundation would be useful. The President and CTO of New Signature are both English majors, not CompSci majors, so we take all types of people. We just need people who can learn quickly and research complex topics. Unlike larger firms, where you may be relegated to making copies/coffee, if you want to wrap your hands around the latest trends in technology, New Signature will let you play in our silicon sandbox. MUSIC PRODUCTION/COMPOSITION WHO: Eric Kaye ‘92: was a music major at Williams and is now the Executive Creative Director/Partner of the Lodge, a music production company with offices in New York, London, Tokyo, and Dallas. He is also a composer, producer, and musician and sits on the Board of Directors of the Association of Music Producers.

Eric has written music for over 100 television commercials for clients such as Mercedes, Coca-Cola, AT&T, Fila, and Doritos. Two of his compositions made the prestigious Shoot Magazine's 'Madison Avenue Top Ten'. He has written music for shows such as Dawson's Creek, Joan of Arcadia, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, VH1's Ambushed!, and several indie films, including Ralph Macchio's Sundance hit, 'Love thy Brother'. Eric has scored television programs for VH1, National Geographic, Nickelodeon, the Learning Channel, Noggin, and PBS.

As a composer/producer/musician, musicians he has worked with include Luther Vandross, Tito Nieves, Will Lee, The English Beat's Dave Wakeling, and The Prodigals among others.

Eric is a third generation professional musician. His grandfather played in the big bands of Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. His father, an accomplished jazz pianist, performed with Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, and Art Blakey, among others. He continues the family tradition as one of the hottest composers on the scene today. He received a degree in Composition with Honors at Williams College and won the Berkshire Symphony Student Composer Competition for his 'The Descent - An Orchestral Fantasy', a four movement work inspired by Dante's Inferno.WHERE: in the Lodge’s studio in New York City.WHAT: Eric oversees a staff of 20 composers, as well as acting as the liaison between the composers and clients, usually advertising agencies, directors, and producers. *13.  GREEN BUILDING WHO:  Charley Stevenson ’93After graduating with a degree in Philosophy and a concentration in Environmental Studies, Charley worked as a math teacher and Williams administrator before transitioning to the green building field in 2008.  He now runs Integrated Eco Strategy, LLC, a consulting firm that focuses on sustainability and energy efficiency in building projects, often through coordination of LEED documentation efforts.

From an office in Williamstown, Charley models building energy use and oversees LEED documentation and certification efforts on commercial and institutional  projects region-wide.  He collaborates with architects and engineers so that environmental issues are considered early in the design process, allowing project teams to meet sustainability and efficiency goals while respecting project budgets. He is working on the Williams College library project as well as the green building project for Kellogg House, the home of the CES.WHERE: Integrated Eco Strategy office, on Water Street in Williamstown.  Day trips to project sites in Boston or New York might develop, depending upon projects active in January.WHAT: For someone who is interested in architecture and engineering, with a particular focus on the interaction between buildings and the environment.  Must be mathematically inclined, with an interest in understanding and analyzing energy consumption. GOVERNMENT/POLITICSWHO: Betsy Wright Hawkings ’86, Chief of Staff for Congressman Andy Barr of Kentucky.Betsy has served as chief of staff for members of Congress for nearly two dozen years.  Working for her hometown congressman, Christopher Shays of Connecticut, for two decades, Betsy took a leading role in helping Shays build bipartisan coalitions to balance the federal budget in 1995-6; establish the 9-11 Commission and implement its recommendations; enact the first provision of the 104th Congress’ “Contract with America,” the Congressional Accountability Act, which applied labor, civil rights and workplace safety laws to Congress; and pass the landmark Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act.  She also helped Congressman Shays advocate against the use of torture and on behalf of women’s rights around the world.  Following Shays defeat in 2008 Betsy served as managing director of Government Relations and the Deputy Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, leading their campaigns against torture and physical abuse of women globally, until returning to the Hill in 2010 to join the staff of Congressman Mike Turner of Ohio.  In addition to rebuilding his office operations following the departure of his longtime chief, Betsy focused on helping Congressman Turner work on a bipartisan basis to prevent and protect victims of sexual assault in the military, and protect the child custody rights of deployed service members.

In May 2011 Betsy was asked to take on a new challenge as chief of one of the top 5 targets in the 112th Congress’ Freshman class, Congressman Bobby Schilling of Illinois.  In addition to staffing up his office operations in DC and Illinois, she has helped the Congressman establish himself as a leading voice in that historic class for reaching across the aisle to find common ground to balance our budget, pay down our debt, get our economy back on track and get America back to work.  Schilling’s efforts to expand public-private partnerships between private industry and military installations were enacted into law in December 2011, and he has authored meaningful bipartisan legislation to improve Veterans health care, reform government contracting procedures and incentivize reduced federal agency spending. In January 2013, Betsy became the Chief of Staff for Congressman Andy Barr of Kentucky.

Established in 1930 as the Broadmoor Civic Improvement Association to address the needs of the developing Broadmoor neighborhood, it was incorporated in 1970 as the Broadmoor Improvement Association, Inc. to stop "blockbusting" in Broadmoor, a well-established, multi-racial/multi-ethnic community already living in harmony.

Before Hurricane Katrina, the Broadmoor Improvement Association had worked continuously to improve the neighborhood. The BIA helped reduce crime; secure the Rosa Keller Library; had joined with Rebuild New Orleans to repair homes of low-income elderly or handicapped; had re-treed neutral grounds and the MLK park area – all in constant effort to improve Broadmoor and maintain a high quality of life for its residents.Since Katrina, the Broadmoor Improvement Association has become known as a "grassroots powerhouse". Broadmoor has built partnerships and was recognized at the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative. The BIA is here to address the needs of the residents by engaging the community and building consensus among residents as to their vision for a revitalized neighborhood that is "Better than Before". Broadmoor has become a model for citizen-led recovery efforts.

In 2010, the BIA’s program Broadmoor Community Care (BCC) was born to address the socio-emotional needs of the community-anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Broadmoor. BCC partners with local universities with programs in mental health and serves as a training site for interns. Students pursuing their masters in social work or counseling can intern with BCC to provide counseling services to the community, to Andrew H. Wilson School, support services to a local homeless ministry and a youth center.

The student will be responsible for making the online class compelling, attractive, easy to use, worthwhile, and memorable. This work might include anything from doing an in-depth look into user psychology to filming high-end promotional videos to doing graphic design. If you have no artistic background, don't worry; we use an easily-customizable platform (no programming knowledge needed!) that allows for painless design and construction. J.C. is a member of the American Institute of Architects and a LEED Accredited Professional via the U.S. Green Building Council. He has been a guest critic to various architecture schools including Yale, CUNY City College, Pratt Institute, NJIT & NYIT and in 2009 was invited to speak at a Yale graduate seminar on the work of Rogelio Salmona.

In 2012, he founded The Beacon Public Space Project, a nonprofit community based group dedicated to improving public space in Beacon.
