Real wood veneers are a natural timber product therefore colour variations may occur between batches of veneers.

High levels of exposure to direct sunlight can (as with real wood) lead to discolouration.

SAM veneered profiles are supplied on moisture resistant MDF and all veneers are available in either an unfinished or pre lacquered option.

Profiles are supplied shrink wrapped for protection and to enhance storage

Please note that these are our core range of profiles and veneers, if you have specific requirements for other sections and wood species, please contact SAM for price and availability.

SAM® MDF MOULDINGS

A little bit about us

HiSTORYSAM Mouldings is a family company, established in 1990 by Managing Director Sam McCrea. The company’s focus on customer satisfaction resulted in rapid growth and in 1995 required that the company moved to new premises. Further expansion was required in 2001 and 2006 to meet growing demand. The company is ideally located just outside Belfast, close to the motorway and port networks ensuring a first rate delivery service.

PRODUCTOur product’s versatility enables it to be used effectively in all types of construction. Remarkable stability and excellent moisture resistance make our product ideal for humid conditions. Long lengths reduce waste, and the precision-made melamine bonded wood fibre-board has no defects, such as knots, shakes and resins, making preparation minimal and producing a consistently superior finish in less time.

Our products can be supplied in a choice of finishes: pre-primed-ready for the top coat of paint, unprimed, or wrapped with real wood veneers, paper or PVC foil. SAM Mouldings has an in-house facility to design and manufacture bespoke profiles to your design and requirements. We also offer a cross-cutting service for window boards, door set components and architraves and a CNC router for hinge and latch recessing, profiling and drilling. Strong marketing support and full technical back up ensures complete customer satisfaction.

Sam McCrea, Managing Director and Julienne McCrea, Director of Business Excellence

PROCeSSeSTotal care and attention to detail is maintained throughout the whole manufacturing process. We design and manufacture our templates and mouldings using the latest CAD/CAM technology. Our excellent relationship and buying power with our suppliers along with our vast storage facilities means that we can turn around your requirements in hours from receipt of your order. Our continuous investment programme ensures that our machinery and equipment is kept right at the cutting edge of our industry.

enViROnMenTALWe at SAM Mouldings lead the way with our commitment to how we manage our environmental impact on society. All waste MDF is extracted from the factory using cyclo filters and stored in silos. This waste is then burned in our combined heat and power plant to provide heat for the factory, offices and paint drying process as well as generating 50% of our electricity requirements. This plant, the first of it’s kind anywhere in the world, has greatly reduced landfill and pollution effects and led to SAM Mouldings being awarded the Green Apple Environmental Award in 2003 and 2007 and the Green Hero Award in 2007.

SAM Mouldings is FSC certified demonstrating our commitment to source our raw material from environmentally aware suppliers who have pledged to preserve the world’s forests through good forestry practice.

QUALiTYWe at SAM Mouldings pride ourselves on the quality of our people, service, processes and our products. This is reflected in the many quality awards that we have won over the years including the Northern Ireland Quality Award in 1998 and 2007, the UK Quality Award in 2000 and 2007 and the ultimate achievement of the European Quality Award in 2002. Our commitment to our people is reflected in the fact that we are the first manufacturing company in the world to achieve Investors in People Champion status. Our products and processes are continually monitored through our programme of continuous improvement, ensuring that we stay the best.

Technical information for SAM® MDF Veneer Wrapped MouldingsSTORingSAM® MDF Mouldings should be stored on dry bases and under cover. They should be fully supported on a flat and level surface with ample ventilation provided to reduce the risk of absorbing moisture. Any protective wrapping should be left in place until time of use.

COnDiTiOningIt is recommended that SAM® MDF mouldings are allowed to remain in the fixing environment for approximately 24 hours before use. It is recommended not to fix SAM® MDF mouldings to damp plaster or any other damp materials and to avoid high humidity conditions.

FiXing inSTRUCTiOnSSAM® MDF Mouldings are easy to fix using traditional tools and materials. Before being fixed in place, any cut edges or other unsealed areas should be carefully sealed by the fixer with at least one coat of proprietary wood primer complying with BS 5358 or one coat of polyurethane or acrylic varnish. When cutting or mitring wrapped product, use a fine tooth saw and cut from moulded face into the profile to avoid excessive rough edges and fibres occurring on the visible surface. Fix at a maximum of 900mm centers

FiXing WiTH ADHeSiVeSAM Mouldings recommends the use of adhesives and as with primed MDF, most modern glues and panel adhesives work well, but manufacturers’ recommendations should be followed in cases of porous damp surfaces. Caution is advised to avoid overspill of adhesive onto the face of the moulding as the veneer could be stained.

FiXing WiTH nAiLSIf using nails for fixing, they should be punched in below the surface and not inserted nearer than 12mm from any edge. Fix at maximum 900mm centres. For nailing through a moulded profile, lost head pins are recommended and caution is advised to avoid danger of surface damage when nailing.

FiXing OF DOOR LiningS For door framing, It is helpful, but not essential, to drill prior to fixing.Linings should be fixed at maximum 600mm centres.

FiLLingAny visible nail or counter-sunk screw fixings should be filled using good proprietary quality shrink resistant suitable for the wood species being used. Alternatively, solid wood plugs again matching the wood species may be used. The filled area should then be sanded smooth with a fine abrasive paper (grit range 320-600) prior to staining / finishing.

FiniSHingWhen varnishing or staining, check with a finish manufacturer for suitability. If unsure test a small area before coating entire surface. Polyurethane or an acrylic woodstain varnish / lacquer are a good choice when finishing your mouldings as they have excellent moisture and vapour resistance. Water based acrylic stains should be applied in light coats to avoid overloading the surface with water/moisture and causing fibre raise.

Please note that when varnishing / lacquering, the veneered surface may darken substantially in colour.
