OHLSSON’S CHALLENGE

Boiki M othei

Cricketers spark off top soccer challengeTHE Ohlsson’s Cliallenge was officially launched in January 1987 after the NSL terminated its sponsorship agreement with Champions of Champions competition sponsors National Panasonic because of dissatisfaction with the company’s financial involvement with the rebel Australian cricket tour of South Africa.

The new sponsors, South African Breweries, undertook to sponsor the competition for R550 000 over three years.

The sponsorship for the 1987 competiton was R150 000.

As its name implies, the Champion of Champions competition was initially designed, when it was first introduced in the 1970s, to identify the champion team of each season through a knockout competition between the top teams.

Previously, the top amateur team in the association to which the league was affiliated was included in the competition. But it has since been decided to exclude amateur teams.

Difficulties arose over the years in seasons where one club would win more than one competition. Competitors in such cases would be fewer than the required number of clubs.

The sponsors wanted a certain number of games played over a specified period. This opened the competition to controversy because of the inclusion of clubs who were, in fact, not champions.

The format for the Ohlsson’s Challenge, agreed on between the NSL and the sponsor, sought to maintain the tradition of pitting the previous season’s best teams against each other on a knockout basis.

An eight-club competition was decided on.

The sponsor explained the format as follows: “ In the first year of the competition there are six automatic entrants - the winners of the four

Chiefs’ captain for the day, Patrick Ntsoelengoe, receives the trophy from SA B ’s Peter Lloyd, with then NSL chairman Leepile Taunyane in attendance.

OHLSSON’S CHALLENGE Man o f th e SeriesWILLIAM SHONGWEBORN at Piggs Peak in Swaziland on April 13, 1963, William Shongwe started playing soccer in 1975 at the age of 12. His first efforts were for St Martin School and the Dangerous Darkies in Mbabane.

He has always been a goalkeeper. After matriculating at the end of

1981, he left Mbabane for Manzini, where he played for Manzini Wanderers, a professional club.

By 1983 he had made the Swaziland national team, but was unfortunate to break his right hand during a training session. He was out of action for the second half of the season.

In 1984 he was back in action, and led the Wanderers to victory in the Swaziland International Trade Fair tournament. He was named Man of the Series.

He was Swaziland’s Footballer of the Year in 1984 and 1985, and the first-choice national goalkeeper.

Shongwe joined Kaizer Chiefs early in 1986. As their regular first- choice keeper, he featured in his third cup final with them in the Ohls- son’s Challenge.

He first appeared in a final with Chiefs in the 1986 JPS KO final against Moroka Swallows. He was the goalkeeper in the 1987 BP Top Eight final.

He went on to play in the Mainstay Cup final, which Chiefs won.

major (knockout) competitions, the league’s runners-up and the second-di- vision promotion winner.

“As Kaizer Chiefs won both the IPS KO and the BP Top Eight, Moroka Swallows, as runners-up in the JPS KO, qualified.

“And as Rangers were runners- up in the Top Eight, and were already in the contest, AmaZulu, by coming third in the Castle league, qualified.

“Because of the complex permutations which could arise if one team wins more than one competition, a wild card system has been introduced as a buffer to counter multiple duplications.

“In choosing the wild card, the obvious preference is a runner-up in One of the existing competitions.

“Should it not be possible to choose a wild card from the runners- up, then we, as sponsors, together with the NSL, will select a team

which, in our opinion, will best promote soccer and the Challenge.

“ In future competitions we will automatically fill seven positions as we will have an Ohlsson’s Challenge holder, and, if there are seven individual winners, the runner-up of the Ohlsson’s will have preference as a wild card.”

The wild card concept has come in for criticism on the grounds that it could be unfair and that it is not wise for the sponsors to select a club merely to ensure that the required number of teams takes part.

Some clubs felt - and expressed the view at the league’s 1987 annual general meeting - that Bloemfontein Celtic, as losing finalists in the 1986 Champion of Champions tournament, deserved a place in the 1987 competition.

The teams chosen to partcipate were:

Rangers (1986 Castle League winners).Bush Bucks (Castle League runners-up).Mamelodi Sundowns (Mainstay Cup winners).Leeds United (second division champions).Kaizer Chiefs (JPS and BP Top Eight winners).Moroka Swallows (JPS KO runners-up).Amandla AmaZulu (third in the Castle League).Jomo Cosmos (wild card - Mainstay runner-up).

The rules of the competition state that:• Penalties will be taken to decide the winners in the first round if there is no winner after extra time.

• The semi-finals will be played over two legs, and penalties will be taken after extra time in the second leg if there is no result.• A single game will constitute the final, and if there is no result after extra time, the game will be replayed.• There will be a play-off for third and fourth places.

The 1987 Challenge was played over four weekends - from March 28 to April 25.

Chiefs were again in unbeatable form, perhaps in better form than in the Top Eight.

They opened the competition against Leeds at Ellis Park. The Amakhosi dominated the newly- promoted Durban team but only managed to win by a solitary goal.

This was largely due to the brilliant form of Leeds’ goalkeeper, Neil Blanckenberg, who pulled off a number of spectacular saves until he was finally beaten by Doctor Khu- malo in the 77th minute.

Rangers were drawn against Bush Bucks, whom they beat in a penalty shootout (4-3) at Umlazi after the teams were deadlocked 2-2 after extra time.

Kevin Mudie came on as a second-half substitute for Dereck Mills, cancelled Sam Mnkomo’s first-half goal and put Rangers into a 2-1 lead in extra time.

At George Goch, Swallows and Cosmos, who produced no goals in the first 90 minutes, managed to score one each after extra time - and the game had to be decided on penalties. Swallows scored five to Cosmos’ four and went into the next round.

Sundowns edged out AmaZulu 1- 0 in Durban through a Bennet Ma- singa goal.

The semi-finals - Chiefs v Sundowns and Swallows v Rangers - were played as double-headers in both legs.

Chiefs thrashed Sundowns 6-0 on aggregate, winning 2-0 in Durban and 4-0 at Ellis Park. It was fine revenge for their controversial 1986 Mainstay Cup quarter-final defeat by Sundowns at Orlando Stadium.

Trevor Mthimkhulu got both goals in the first leg, and Johannes “Chippa” Molatedi got a hat-trick in the second. The other goal came from Patrick “Ace” Ntsoelengoe.

So dominant were Chiefs in the second leg that Sundowns coach Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala argued with referee James Monamodi and

four goals in the first leg, but in the second - in which Swallows’ Paul Motaung and Rangers’ Dereck Mills were sent off - Swallows scored three to win 5-2 on aggregate.

The talented Thomas Hlongwa- ne, involved in a dispute with coach Rodney Bush, started the game on the bench. The game proved a high point for Mike Mangena, who scored two and helped make the third.

The Swallows-Chiefs final - a repeat of the 1986 JPS KO final - was a thriller which Swallows could have won had they taken their chances and marked Chiefs’ strikers tightly in the penalty area.

As it happened. Chiefs recovered from an early onslaught, somehow survived the pressure in the second half and got the goals that counted.

Absolum “Scara” Thindwa opened Chiefs’ account in the 34th minute to give his team a 1-0 halftime lead, but Mangena equalised in the 69th minute.

Then an unmarked Thindwa was

allowed to dive and head the ball in to restore Chiefs’ lead.

Marks Maponyane - replacing Doctor Khumalo in his first game since sustaining an injury to his jaw in a league match against Swallows on February 28 - was unmarked in the penalty area when he made it 3-1.

Swallows built up their attacks impressively enough, but ran out of ideas and lacked the killer instinct and the necessary accuracy in front of goal.

So it was Chiefs again, winning their second official competition of the season.

The Man of the Series award again went to a Chiefs’ player - goalkeeper William Shongwe, who pipped Trevor Mthimkhulu to win the trophy and the R5 000 cash prize.

Sundowns won third place by beating Rangers 3-1 after the teams were level 1-1 at halftime.

But they aroused the fury of the NSL by arriving 45 minutes late for the game - an offence for which they were later punished.

REPRESENTATIVE GAMES

B oiki M otheiTHE NSL toyed with the idea of staging a “representative” game in 1985 and 1986, but decided against it mainly because an already crowded fixture program did not permit it.

Representative games of some kind or other have been held by the country’s professional leagues in the past. Provincial teams, mainly Natal and Transvaal sides, played against each other in the National Football League, the South African Soccer League, and the National Professional Soccer League.

The NSL decided on two matches. The first would be between an NSL South African-born team of first division players and a team of foreign-born players in the first division.

Similar matches used to be played in the National Football League.

The second, played as a curtain- raiser, would be between an NSL Un- der-23 team and a SA Universities XL

A number of the players in the university team were also NSL first division players.

One of the purposes of the main game was to honour the league’s top players and display a team which would give some idea of “national” strength.

The second game was staged to showcase the best of the younger players.

The whole exercise was also planned to enable the league to make extra money - it received the gate-takings. The money was provisionally earmarked to help finance its second division leagues.

The last such “representative” games - between “South African” teams and “The Rest” - were held in 1983 as part of the South African National Football Association’s 50th anniversary celebrations, and in 1984.

Neither was a success because the teams were assembled at short notice, had little time in which to prepare and the matches themselves failed to capture the imagination of the soccer public.

To avoid those problems, the NSL decided to allow the players to train together with their respective coaches for a week before the game and suspended all fixtures for that week.

The main game was sponsored

Selected NSL teams show off talentsfor a reported R150 000 by SABC TV 2/3. It was officially called the TV2/3 Prestige Soccer Match.

The Under-23 match was backed for an undisclosed amount by First National Bank and called the First National Bank Challenge.

The players were reported to have been paid R500 each.

The games, played pt Ellis Park Stadium on October 11, were watched by a crowd estimated to be over 50 000 and were shown live on TV2/3.

Off the field, the main game sparked off controversy.

The official brochure for the event billed it as “international soccer”, which, of course, it was not.

The foreign-born team was also referred to as an Overseas XI and the International XI and the NSL SA- born team as the South African XL

Three coaches were nominated by the NSL to prepare the “SA XI” and three the “International XI”.

AmaZulu’s Clive Barker, Bush Bucks’ Michael Dlamini and Mame- lodi Sundowns’ Stanley Tshabalala were in line for the job of handling the “SA team”, with Barker being finally chosen and then deciding on Tshabalala to assist him.

Arcadia’s Stan Lapot got the nod ahead of Theo Dumitru (Kaizer Chiefs), Alex Forbes (Rangers) and Terry Paine (Wits University) for the job of preparing the foreign-born side and appointed his Arcadia colleague, John Latham, to help him.

The NSL appointed the captains - Patrick Ntsoelengoe (Kaizer Chiefs) and Ernest Chirwali (Bloemfontein Celtic).

Two squads were announced on September 8.

The match proved to be competitive and entertaining, although it did not live up to its official billing.

The foreign-born side played more fluently and were tactically superior, but they didn’t have enough effective penetration in attack.

Absolum Thindwa, who would

Som e of the local-born players d isplay the trophy after their 1-0 win.

have provided much power up front, missed the game when he accepted a trial with a Belgian club.

After a shaky start, the team of local-born players managed to play a well co-ordinated game and had the upper hand for spells in both halves.

It was the South African players who had most of the scoring chances.

Both Calvin Petersen and Shane McGregor missed with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Despite his misses, the best player in the SA-born XI on the field seemed to be McGregor, who was a constant threat to the opposing defence.

The Rangers’ striker made amends for his lapses by scoring the only goal of the match in the 60th minute when he headed into an empty net a high cross from Patrick Ntsoelengoe on the left flank, which eluded the foreign-born defence.

Prominent, too, were Harris Choeu and Patrick Ntsoelengoe.

Joel Mnini and Marks Mapon- yane - the latter played more of a midfield role - were rather disappointing.

Aristides Zaza, Ernest Chirwali and goalkeeper William Shongwe were perhaps the best of the foreign-born team.

The NSL Under-23 team played under the guidance of coach Roy Matthews (Jomo Cosmos), who was assisted by his Orlando Pirates counterpart, Johannes Khomane.

to the Mainstay Cup era

Mainstay Cup is one of the °jdest and, for many, the most presti- 8>ous of all knockout competitions ^hat have been played in the NPSL ^nd NSL.

It started in 1978, with the 1987 Competition marking its 10th anniversary.

It was here the competition ended its “life” when sponsors, Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery, announced •n December 1987 that they would tot renew their contract with the NSL.

As in previous years, the 1987 Competition was open to senior ama- Icur teams - this time, those of the Soccer Association of South Africa - tnd professional teams.

NSL second-division teams enter 'n the last stages of the preliminary rounds after most amateur teams have been eliminated.

The first-round proper is known 3s the “ Last 32” stage. It is then that Ihe 18 first-division clubs join the remaining 14 clubs from the lower divisions.

In 1987, the competition started 3t the end of August and ended with the final at Ellis Park Stadium on November 28.

Because of poor administration 3nd suspicions that some of the draws •nay have been irregular, it was again dogged by controversy.

In 1986 a lower league club, Cardiff City, was “forgotten” and left out by the time the draw for the first round proper took place. It had to be brought back into the competition later on.

An administrative blunder embarrassed the league and the competition again in 1987.

In the last round before the “Last 32” stage, a victory by national sec-

ond-division club Silver Spurs over regional second-division team Chippas Dynamos was officially disputed by Dynamos.

The league dismissed the protest, but while the matter was still subject to an appeal being heard, it inexplicably allowed the first round match between Silver Spurs and Orlando Pirates to go ahead.

The League informed both clubs shortly before their match that the result could be ruled null and void, depending on the outcome of the ap

on penalties, but then the Appeal Board ruled that the Spurs-Dyna- mos match be replayed.

Spurs and Dynamos played again. Dynamos won, but this time there was a dispute relating to unregistered players.

The League found that one or both teams had breached the rules
