Cantiga de Roda and Canção da Terra by H. Villa-‐Lobos Heitor Villa-‐Lobos (Rio de Janeiro, 1887-‐1959), the best-‐known Brazilian composer of the 20th century, wrote instrumental solo works, chamber music, concertos, orchestral works, stage works, and vocal works. Among the many choral works listed in the catalogue compiled by the Villa-‐Lobos Museum in Rio de Janeiro, there are thirteen pieces specified for women’s choir. Cantiga de Roda and Canção da Terra were written in 1925 for women’s choir and orchestra and performed for the first time on November 15, 1926 in the Teatro Lírico of Rio de Janeiro by the Coro de Artistas Brasileiros, conducted by Villa-‐Lobos in a concert honoring the Governo da Republica. They were performed again the following year during Villa-‐Lobos’s second trip to Paris, when he intended to demonstrate a new style in his compositions to European audiences. The concert was held at the Sala Gaveau on December 12 with L’Art Choral and the Orchestra des Concerts Colonne, again conducted by Villa-‐Lobos. Unfortunately, the version for women’s choir and orchestra of the two pieces was never found nor published. Editor Arthur Napoleão published two versions of Cantiga de Roda—one for women’s choir and piano, published in 1997, and one for a cappella women’s choir, published in 1988—and one version of Canção da Terra for women’s choir and piano, published in 1997. The present editions, by Hingrid Kujawinski are faithful to those published by Arthur Napoleão, accessed via the Villa-‐Lobos Museum in Rio de Janeiro. The title Cantiga de Roda makes reference to children singing and dancing around in circles in Brazil. The piece is set in ternary form (ABA), with a codetta. The two verses Villa-‐Lobos chose to set are in the middle section of the piece, and the melody is based on a popular Brazilian tune. This popular melody is sung in two parts and is enhanced by chromaticism placed in the inner voices of the piano accompaniment. The first and last sections of the piece are identical and display a recurrent feature of Villa-‐Lobos’ choral music: the use of the voice as an instrument through the use of vocables, or nonsenses syllables, instead of text. He emphasizes pure tone and timbre as the choir starts the piece by humming in a polyphonic texture. With its polyphonic rhythms and fast paced sections framing an expressive middle section, Cantiga de Roda is a light-‐hearted composition that offers lots of variety for the performers and the audience. Editor’s note: All changes reflect the Arthur Napoleão editions for women’s choir and piano, and the a cappella version of this piece. 1. All Portuguese terms have been translated to their appropriate equivalents in Italian or English. 2. Measure numbers have been added to facilitate communication in rehearsal. 3. In measure 27, the word Menos, may refer to dynamic as well as tempo. (In the a cappella version, Villa-‐Lobos wrote that measures 25–26 should be
performed ‘Lento, quarter note = 84 to 88,’ and starting at measure 27, the tempo should be ‘Adagio, quarter note = 58 to 60.’) 4. A natural sign has been added in measure 37 before the B4 on the fourth beat. 5. Accents have been added in measures 54 –55 and 58–59, to match measures 15–16, and 17–18. The same occurs in the alto line in measures 58–59. 6. A natural sign has been added in measure 48 before the B4 in the soprano line. In Canção da Terra, Villa-‐Lobos sets a text by Ronald de Carvalho (1893-‐1935), a Brazilian poet and diplomat from Rio de Janeiro. Like Villa-‐Lobos, Carvalho took part in the Week of Modern Art. Modernists of the time expressed a desire to sing about the nature, the soul, and the Brazilian traditions; indeed, the combination of Carvalho’s text with the adventurous harmonies of Villa-‐Lobos makes this piece a great example of the Modernist movement in Brazilian music. Similar to his other works, Villa-‐Lobos combines the words of the poem with nonsense syllables. Canção da Terra is also in ternary form (ABA), where section A consists of layers of ostinato patterns both in the piano accompaniment and in the voices, which again sing in vocables, followed by the first and second verses of the poem, sung in two parts by the sopranos, with brief alto interjections of the ostinato pattern from the beginning of the piece. In this first section, the soprano line is built on the sixteenth-‐eighth-‐sixteenth-‐note rhythmic figure, typical of the choro1 and chorinho. The middle section features verses three and four of the poem sung in unison, with patterns in the piano accompaniment recalling the beginning of the piece. The A section returns powerfully with the fourth verse of the poem, set to the same music as before. To reinforce the words, Villa-‐Lobos adds text to the alto line instead of the word “Lályá”. Villa-‐Lobos ends the piece by setting the first verse again in a grandioso style, adding more complex rhythmic patterns in the piano accompaniment, and interspersing the notes of the ostinato pattern heard in the beginning of the piece in the last measures. Editor’s note: All changes reflect the Arthur Napoleão edition for women’s choir and piano, and Villa-‐Lobos’ manuscript excerpts of this piece. 7. As in Cantiga de Roda, all Portuguese terms have been translated to their appropriate equivalents in Italian or English. 8. Measure numbers have been added to facilitate communication in rehearsal. 9. Staccatos signs were added from measure 79 to 92, and in measures 99 and 100. 10. Sfz signs were added to all measures that contain the piano accompaniment pattern seen in measure 27. 11. In measure 160 of the first edition, the notes for the choir are A natural (alto) and E flat (soprano). In the manuscript the notes are A flat (alto) and E
natural (soprano).
1Choro is popularly called chorinho ("little cry" or "little lament") and it is an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre that developed in Rio de Janeiro around 1870. The Choro Ensemble is traditionally formed of one or more solo instruments (flute, mandolin, clarinet or saxophone) and the cavaquinho, guitars and pandeiro as accompaniment instruments. Despite its name, the music often has a fast and happy rhythm.

iii Since the text for Cantiga de Roda and Canção da Terra were written, several changes have occurred in Brazilian Portuguese spelling. Except for passear, in Cantiga de Roda, which has since lost an intervocalic ‘i’ (passeiar), and de repente, in Cançao da Terra, then written as one word (derrepente), all the other words that have undergone spelling alteration are pronounced the same way. All current spellings are used in the new editions. The IPA transliterations for Cantiga de Roda and Canção da Terra were made following the rules in Português Brasileiro Cantado – Normas para a Pronúncia do Português Brasileiro no Canto Erudito (Sung Portuguese – Norms for the Pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese in Scholarly Singing), published in Opus Magazine Volume XIII, Issue II (December 2007). http://www.ia.unesp.br/Home/Pesquisa/pbcantado_artigo.pdf Jan Reinhart created a functional translation from Portuguese to English for both texts.
