I was given barely ten months to complete the

assignment of the writing Amma’s life story. I can say it is unable to learn about Jayalalithaa, not with a ten month but a whole life.

She lived her whole life in limelight, however she was an enigmatic. As far as I am

concerned the journey through her life was a journey through a dense backwoods which has myriad of directions. Many a time I lost my

way. All the time I was lent a couple of hands. Most importantly my journalism friends, who encouraged and helped me by providing the

archive materials, had been published in forty-fifty years. I am grateful and indebted to

different print and online media, especially The Hindu, India Today, Ndtv.com, Indian Express, Times of India, Fistspot, Livemint, Vikatan,

    Dinamalar, DNA.

I need to thank, Mr.Jack of True Editor

team who went through the manuscript and gave me the instructions.

I am also grateful to Ms. Vasanthi the famous writer, her books offered me an insight into Jayalalithaa‘s yearly life and the political

    history of TN.

Next, I also need to thank Mr.

N.J.Vasudevan, step-brother of Jayalalithaa, Nagaraja Narsipura, Lokesh Mysore, Karppanam, Durai Saravanam. My special

whole the Chennai journeys and suffered a lot. I extend my sincere gratitude all men of AIADMK who amply supported to this venture.

Finally I thank to Mr. Ankur Tiwari, CEO, Educreation Publishing, Miss. Shradhaa, Miss.

    Forward

I reached MGR Memorial, Marina beach in

Chennai on December 27th by 8 pm. I visited the tomb of the illustrious Jayalalitha, the most adored late CM of Tamil Nadu, fondly revered

as Puraitchi Thalaivi by Tamilians with great respect and paid my homage. Because, I wanted to commence my endeavor of penning

her stunning life story right there. I was really taken aback on seeing the copious crowds who had assembled to behold the hallowed remains

    of their beloved Amma.

Three weeks had passed since her demise. However, the influx of crowd did not

wane. It seemed as though the causality had just happened. Most of them had moistened eyes and busted hearts. The most agonizing

sight was when I saw a middle aged man who found a little space at the corner of the barricade. He was looking incessantly at the

tomb as well as the pleasant portrait of Amma that was set up there. He was sobbing inconsolably. I kept watching him for more

than an hour because I waited for the crowd to reduce and take a photograph for my book. Though all people were passing by and paying

their tributes by offering the flowers, that man remained there unmoved, oblivious to everything around him.

Finally, policemen informed me that he used to come here regularly after her body was

kept there, lamenting relentlessly. I was stunned. I had been watching him for 3 hours. When I came back disappointed that I could

not take the photograph even after the crowd had waned, that despondent man was still there sobbing.

This was not just about one man. For

the next 7 days, I could see several people like him who lamented profusely. Though I waited for one week to take a picture without any

crowd, I failed to do so because the crowd kept pouring in.

I think there is hardly any other leader in India who won the hearts of millions and

influenced their life to such a great extent. Jayalalitha was a lovable leader, sister, mother, savior and a demi-goddess for many.

    There are several instances where

people get apotheosized by the chicanery of spirituality. However, the deification is

generally outside the realm of pragmatism, especially in this era and in the realm of politics.

Jayalalitha was a marble statue created

marvelously through the furnace of intense experiences. Her life was replete with the bitterness of loneliness and acridity of

bereavements. Her life was also burned in the kilns of rival harassment. However, she remains a strong woman who could soar to

unmatched heights of fame and prestige, with

sheer perseverance and steadfastness. She is the uncrowned queen of the Indian cinema and

the iron lady of Indian politics. I can safely say that her life story will continue to pique the interests of many generations. And, this book

is only a billboard dedicated to her tempestuous, almost convoluted life.

With sincerity and love, I present this book to the readers.

    1. She is Born __________________________________________

"An Indian tradition is that a girl is born as a daughter, then a wife and should die as a mother. I couldn't achieve myself as a wife.

But I will definitely die as a mother."

These words are from the answer given by

Jayalalithaa, years before she was posed a question about her personal life and the rumours stuck on it.

Ammu-Amma. Between two rhythmic words, what the time kept was an unusual life

which was dramatical, turbulent, competent and unbelievable. This unusualness was transcended over the all phases of Jayalithaa's

    life.

Jayalalithaa was born on 24th February

1948. As far as a Tamil origin Iyengar family is concerned, she was born under the sign of Pisces on the day of Masi Magam, the day of

celebration and worship. She won the affection of all with her unusual cuteness and fondness and she was affectionately called Ammu, being

the granddaughter of Dr. N. Rangachari, court physician of Mysore palace.

Ammu was the second child born to the couple Jayaram-Vedamma. Their first offspring was a boy named Pappu. Among Ayyangars,

there prevailed a custom of giving two names

to a child. Ammu was officially named Komalavally

    whereas Pappu was Jayakumar.

There are many implications behind the

name of Jayalalitha. Jayaram's family had been generally known as the Jaya

family. His sisters were named Jayalakshmi and Jayaseetha. Apart from

this, it is said that it was Jayaram who had given the name to his daughter in the honour of Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, the king of

Mysore as he was very intimate to him. The most acceptable variation however, says that her name is derived from the names of the two

houses where she lived in Mysore ‗Jaya Vilas‘ and ‗Lalitha Vilas.‘ However, old-time Mysoreans recall that her grandfather, Dr N

Rangachar‘s residence was named ‗Red House‘ and addressed, No 940, on Post Office Road, Lakshmipuram. Now, it has changed several

hands and is currently the home to Lakshmipuram Sports Club with a label ‗Swarna Vilas‘. Anyhow, this name has been

carved in steel on the history of Indian politics, especially in the South Indian arena. Usually the name Jayalalitha ends with a single 'a'. In

2001 however, an additional letter 'a' was added to the spelling of her name for reasons related to numerology. Now it's written as

    'Jayalalithaa'.

Vedamma was only 11 years old when she got married to Jayaram. This was his second

marriage. He had married first Jayamma, his maternal uncle's daughter in 1935. The

gorgeous wedding was held at Bannergatta in Bangalore. The presence of the Maharaja of Mysore to this event added flamboyance to the

party. In the joy of his personal surgeon's son's wedding, he gifted Jayaram a handful of precious jewels and stones.

While nurturing his relationship with Jayamma, Jayaram also fell in love with

Vedamma, his cousin's sister's daughter. In 1937, he married her with the acquiescence of his father Dr.Rangachar. With the advent of a

new spouse, Jayaram deliberately became estranged from Jayamma and his son Vasudevan. He was a lawyer in Sreerangam by

profession, but he was extremely luxurious and a spendthrift. He was thoroughly dependent upon his father who while being the personal

surgeon of King of Mysore, had amassed a huge amount of assets. After his demise in 1951, his profligate son squandered everything

within a short span of time.

The ostentatious life of Jayaram met an

abrupt end. He died on 5th November, 1951 in mysterious circumstances. Though the causes were ignorant, it was widely attributed to his

heavy and regular alcoholism. The untimely death of her husband shoved Vedamma in obscurity. That dark, mournful night when her

father's corpse was brought home had been vividly remembered by Jayalalithaa.
