THE COMPOSER
Jim Cifelli has been active as a Trumpeter, composer and educator in New York City for nearly 25 years. Jim holds degrees from New York University and the Manhattan School of Music. Numerous professional and student ensembles including the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, The Composers Big Band, Clarion University and many others have performed his compositions and arrangements. Jim has released four CD’s as a bandleader. He has also been active as an adjudicator and clinician and is the Director of Performing Arts at the Trinity School in New York City.
THE COMPOSITION
Low Down Dirty Dog Blues is, at its heart, a traditional 12 bar blues shuffle reminiscent of such classics as Kansas City and Chicken Shack. The shuffle groove draws it’s strength from the “pocket” that is created by the bass and drums on beats two and four. Careful attention should also be paid throughout the ensemble to the swing eighth feel. The first eighth note of every phrase should have a wide legato sound, never clipped. The written backgrounds may be played on cue, but care should be taken so that they don’t overpower the soloists. Have fun!
All charts in the First Place for Jazz series feature flexible instrumentation. They can be performed by the full jazz ensemble, or will sound full and complete with as few as nine players: 1st and 2nd Alto Saxophone, 1st Tenor Saxophone, 1st and 2nd Trumpet, 1st Trombone, Piano, Bass, and Drums. Parts are also included for Flute, Clarinet, F Horn, Tuba, and Baritone T.C.

IMPROVISING SOLOS ON LOW DOWN DIRTY DOG BLUES
Improvisation is the essence of the jazz experience and students should be encouraged to improvise solos. The solo section for Low Down Dirty Dog Blues is a 12 bar Concert F blues found in bars 33-44. The F blues scale will work for improvising over all twelve bars. Any instrument can solo, and the solo section can be repeated as many times as necessary. For soloists who wish not to improvise, there is a suggested solo provided in all of the parts.
