Executive Summary

China and India Lead on Active and Planned Oil and Gas Pipeline Lengths, Respectively

China leads the Asia-Pacific countries in terms of

active oil and gas pipeline length, with its pipeline

network of XX miles (mi) (XX kilometres (km)),

accounting for around XX% of the region’s total

active pipeline length. India, on the other hand,

leads the region in terms of planned pipeline length

addition by XX, with its plan to add XX mi (XX km),

accounting for over XX% of planned pipeline length

addition in the region during this period.

After China, India and Australia have the next

longest networks of active oil and gas pipelines in

the region, with XX mi (XX km) and XX mi (XX km)

respectively. Together, these three countries

account for around XX% of the total active pipeline

length in Asia-Pacific.

After India, Turkmenistan will witness the next-

largest planned pipeline length addition by 2020,

with XX mi (XX km) added. India and Turkmenistan

together account for XX% of the pipeline lengths

planned to be built in the region by 2020.

The following figure shows length of active and

Gas Pipelines Account for Majority of the Active and Planned Pipeline Length in Asia-Pacific

There are currently XX active oil and gas pipelines

in Asia-Pacific, with a total length of XX mi (XX

km). Of these, XX are gas pipelines, with a total

length of XX mi (XX km), or XX% of the total active

pipeline length in the region.

Gas pipelines also account for the majority of

pipelines planned to be built in Asia-Pacific by

2020. Of the XX planned oil and gas pipelines in

Asia-Pacific by 2020, XX will carry gas, with a total

length of XX mi (XX km). Planned gas pipeline

length in the region accounts for XX% of the total

planned pipeline length to be built by 2020.

OIL & GAS PIPELINE OUTLOOK APAC – NEW PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION CONCENTRATED ON NATURAL GAS

Introduction and Overview

2 Introduction and Overview

Pipelines are an important means of transportation for oil and gas. This is especially true in regions

such as Asia-Pacific where rail and road infrastructures are often overburdened.

In Asia-Pacific, countries with the largest oil and gas pipeline networks include China, India,

Australia and Turkmenistan. All plan to further develop their oil and gas pipeline infrastructure up to

2020 through the construction of new pipelines. In some, such as China and India, the planned

pipeline infrastructure is primarily meant to carry oil, natural gas and refined products from point of

import, or point of production or processing, to demand centers. In some other countries, such as

Turkmenistan, the planned pipeline infrastructure is primarily intended to serve as a means to

export oil or natural gas.

State-owned companies play an important role in the oil and gas pipeline industry in Asia-Pacific. In

the majority of the countries in the region, state-owned companies own and operate the majority of

the pipeline infrastructure, with the private sector playing a minimal role. However, there are certain

exceptions, such as Australia, where the private sector owns and manages the pipelines, and the

government has only a regulatory role.

2.1 GlobalData Report Guidance

The report begins with an executive summary chapter, which highlights the key findings of the

report. The main body of the report is structured as follows:

Chapter two provides an overview and introduction to the report. It provides chapter-by-chapter

report guidance, along with an overview of key trends and issues, and active and planned

pipelines planned in Asia-Pacific.

Chapter three analyzes the oil and gas pipeline industry in China by crude oil, petroleum

product and natural gas pipelines.

Chapter four analyzes the oil and gas pipeline industry in India by crude oil, petroleum product

and natural gas pipelines.

Chapter five analyzes the oil and gas pipeline industry in Australia by crude oil, petroleum

product and natural gas pipelines.

Introduction and Overview

Chapter six analyzes the oil and gas pipeline industry in the rest of Asia-Pacific – excluding

China, India and Australia – by crude oil, petroleum product and natural gas pipelines.

Chapter seven compares operators of active and planned pipelines in Asia-Pacific, and key

planned oil and gas pipeline projects.

Chapter eight is the appendix to the report.

7.1 Active and Planned Pipelines by Key Operators

PetroChina operates the largest network of active oil and gas pipelines in Asia-Pacific, followed by

APA Group and Sinopec. The three companies operate active pipeline lengths of XX mi (XX km),

XX mi (XX km) and XX mi (XX km), respectively, and collectively operate around XX% of the active

pipeline length in Asia-Pacific. Other major operators of active oil and gas pipelines in the region

include IOC, Gail, and Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Ltd.

The following figure and table show the length and number of active oil and gas pipelines in Asia-

Pacific by key operators.

PetroChina maintains the largest oil and gas pipeline network in China, and is the country’s largest

producer and distributor of natural gas. Most of its pipelines are located in the northeastern region,

and in industrialized centers close to the coast. The company also maintains long-distance

pipelines such as the eastern and western sections of West-East Pipeline II, which facilitate the

import and transmission of natural gas from Central Asia to eastern China.

8.1 Definitions

Only major, trunk, crude oil, petroleum product and natural gas pipelines are included in this report.

This report does not include information on gathering pipelines and distribution pipelines.

Information on major, trunk, crude oil, petroleum product and natural gas pipelines has been

sourced from company web pages, annual reports, news and press releases, presentations, other

company reports and accounts; ministry/regulatory sources and from major journals such as

Reuters and Bloomberg, based on the information availability prior to the publication of report.

The country associated with a pipeline is the country in which the start point of the pipeline is

situated.

The length and capacities of the pipeline/pipeline system mentioned in this report are the actual

figures for entire pipelines and are not equity weighted by company.

Largest pipeline is based on the total length of the pipeline/pipeline system.

The total pipeline length of a company refers to the total length of the pipelines in which the

company holds an equity stake.

The lengths of pipelines of partly owned and significant subsidiaries are not included in total

pipeline length of the parent company. The former are shown as separate companies in the report.
