Now complete activities 1, 2, 3 and 4 based on the documents you’ve just looked at.

Activity 1

Use documents 1, 2 and 3 to help you complete the tasks.

You are a committee member of a running club and as part of your role you monitor the fitness of new members. The club is planning a charity cross-country run. A student has joined the club with the intention of participating in the run. Your first duty is to establish the initial fitness of the student.

A. You use a step test to work out the student’s initial fitness grade. In the test the person steps on and off a bench for up to 4 minutes. The fitness index (F) is calculated using a formula and then matched to a fitness grade table.

Fitness index (F) = 50T p + q + r

T is the exercise time in secondsp, q and r are the number of heart beats in three 30 second intervals after completing the exercise. What is the student’s initial fitness grade?

As another measure of health you ask the student to record their weight at the end of

each week. The student is 5ft 7ins in height. At the end of week 1 the student’s Body

Mass Index is in the Overweight category.

B. At the end of which week is the student’s Body Mass Index in the Normal category? Show your working.

Activity 2

Use document 3 to help you complete the tasks.

To develop fitness the student does two sessions of cross-country running per week. During this time the student keeps a record of the details of their training. In the final week before the charity run the student only does one session.

A. You ask the student to wear a heart-beat monitor when running. This keeps details of heart-beat (pulse). The student records the heart-beat (bpm) at the end of the run and again one minute later. The ‘Recovery rate’ is the difference between these two readings. The greater the number, the better shape you are in!

Prepare a graph of the student’s ‘Recovery rate’ during the final five weeks before the event.

Activity 3

Use documents 4 and 5 to help you complete the tasks.

The committee is planning for the charity run.

A. One of the committee members has prepared a pencil sketch of the cross-country run location. A scale drawing of the location will be printed on an A0 paper to use as a poster for participants. A0 paper size is 841mm by 1189mm. The poster will be in portrait orientation. The scale drawing needs to use as much space as possible on the poster.

Calculate an appropriately rounded scale to use. Show how you would check that your answer is appropriate.

B. A sponsor offered to make a large donation to charity if the student completes the run within 30 minutes.
