    Summary

    This report gives an insight into the data of a sample of students who got placed

    from the batch of 2009-11 and the relationship between their academic scores

    and placement outcome. This report highlights the factors (if any) that influence the

    placement outcome for a student and it can serve as an outline for managing students

    expectations. Mentors can use this data to validate diligence and consistency in

    academics.

    Students who got placed in 31 different companies were selected and the

    parameters of selection ranged from academics, attendance in first year to the

    companies in which they did their summer internship.

    The project is an exploratory data research from the existing data on students and

    placements. Some of the companies selected for the analysis are Agilent

    Technologies, Capital IQ, India Bulls Securities, Reckitt Benckiser, Manpower

    Services limited, E value Serve and Axis Bank Ltd and the outcome of this analysis is

    presented in the latter part of the report. Students who got selected in these thirty

    one companies are 98 in number. Some of these 31 companies have been visiting

    IILM campus for the last few years.

    The sample of students was largely selected on judgmental basis to cover a range of

    profiles backgrounds and scores and a similar basis was used for the job profiles. The

    study can be replicated for the entire batch post feedback in terms of use and

    significance.

    Findings/Insights

    CGPA Significance

    The average CGPA of the selected students is greater than the remaining students and it

    contradicts the myth the students have that CGPA has nothing to do with placement and is

    only a short listing tool. The average CGPA of the 98 students selected for the research is

    almost 3 out of 4 which implies that in order to impress the interviewers, one has to be above

    average with good clarity in concepts.

    In the CGPA curve, it can be seen that four out of the five high fliers were absorbed in to

    Capital IQ. The curve dropped to as low as 2 which mostly comprises of the students

    who got selected in sales profile (which requires selling, persuasion skills and good

    communication skills as compared to higher academics grades). Students who are keen to

    pursue sales jobs need not lay much emphasis on attaining a higher CGPA, rather they

    should hone their communication and selling skills. Average CGPA is 2.8 for sales profile which

    is 0.2 less than average and same trend can be seen., The companies which offered salesprofile jobs in the data set are Ascot hotels & resorts, Barclays bank, Bharti Axa General

    Insurance, Citibank, Estate99.com, Fullerton Securities Limited, HDFC Sales Private Ltd, HT

    Media Ltd, ICICI Securities Ltd, India Bulls Ltd, India Bulls Securities Ltd, Reckitt

    Benckiser and 99Acres.

    Academics

    Students academics showed a good relation with placements as student marks in the Xth

    standard ranged from 40% being the minimum to 89.8% being the maximum and the

    average percentage of the sample is almost 70% (69.47%). Marks in XIIth

    standard ranged

    from 44% being the minimum to 93.3% being the maximum with the average of almost 70

    % (69.69%). Consistency in academics is an important tool to impress the interviewers.

    Stream

    It is observed that the graduation stream plays an important role in the kind of job

    the student gets, Agilent Technologies offering a job profile of Accounts management

    and transactions control selected only B.COM students as they wanted to hire student with

    Finance major and B.Com background.

    Total number of B.Com students selected is 29 out of 97, BBA-17, B.Sc-13, BA-9 and

    B.Tech-7. Capital IQ with a research profile maintained its brand equity by selecting

    candidates with high CGPAs and good academics throughout. Average CGPA of the four

    students who were selected for Capital IQ is as high as 3.72 with their average 10th

    % and 12th

    % as 84.06 and 84.36 percentages respectively. From this observation using rule ofthumb

    it can be safely presumed that Capital IQ is more interested in the high flyers in

    academics with consistency through out. The portfolio of streams is a mix up with no specific

    pattern followed. India Bulls Securities Ltd portfolio has a great variety and it comprised of

    engineering, B Com, BBA, BA, BCA and B.Sc students. The point to be noted here is that sales

    need no specific stream other than flair to sell and passion to grow with good communication

    skills and selling skills.

    Reckitt Benckiser selected a couple of students, one with engineering background while

    other is a B.Com background.
